Diffusive benefits of cylinders in front of a Schroeder diffuser
A numerical investigation is performed into the diffusive effects of cylinders positioned in front of a Schroeder diffuser. A regular line of cylinders is shown to offer notable improvements to diffusion from a periodic Schroeder device, provided lateral cylinder spacing is incommensurable with the Schroeder period width. Further investigation considers angular dependence and low frequency results in greater detail, as well as the effects on narrowband and modulated Schroeder devices. An optimization procedure is subsequently performed to investigate the effects of an irregular cylinder arrangement, which provides further diffusive benefits. (C) 2010 Acoustical Society of America
Volumetric diffusers : pseudorandom cylinder arrays on a periodic lattice
Most conventional diffusers take the form of a surface based treatment, and as a result can only operate in hemispherical space. Placing a diffuser in the volume of a room might provide greater efficiency by allowing scattering into the whole space. A periodic cylinder array (or sonic crystal) produces periodicity lobes and uneven scattering. Introducing defects into an array, by removing or varying the size of some of the cylinders, can enhance their diffusing abilities. This paper applies number theoretic concepts to create cylinder arrays that have more even scattering. Predictions using a Boundary Element Method are compared to measurements to verify the model, and suitable metrics are adopted to evaluate performance. Arrangements with good aperiodic autocorrelation properties tend to produce the best results. At low frequency power is controlled by object size and at high frequency diffusion is dominated by lattice spacing and structural similarity. Consequently the operational bandwidth is rather small. By using sparse arrays and varying cylinder sizes, a wider bandwidth can be achieved
Synthesis of high-refractive index sulfur containing polymers for 193-nm immersion lithography: A progress report
To be able to extend the 193 nm immersion lithography technology platform, the development of high refractive index immersion fluids and resists is required. This paper reports our investigations into generating high refractive index polymers for use in photoresist formulations for 193 nm immersion lithograph. In this study a series of model compounds have been screened for refractive index and transparency at 589 nm and 193 nm. For the compounds studied this series of experiments demonstrated that sulfur-containing compounds have a positive effect on the refractive index of a molecule at 589 nm. However, the situation is complicated by the presence of absorption bands for some small molecules in the low waveleingth region. To demonstrate this, we examined the refractive index dispersion of a series of molecules based on ethyl acetate with varying degrees of sulfur substitution. These results indicated that an anomalous increase in refractive index could be expected 20 - 30 nm above the absorption maximum. The implications for design of high refractive index resists for 193 nm immersion lithography are discussed
Disorder Effects on Exciton-Polariton Condensates
The impact of a random disorder potential on the dynamical properties of Bose
Einstein condensates is a very wide research field. In microcavities, these
studies are even more crucial than in the condensates of cold atoms, since
random disorder is naturally present in the semiconductor structures. In this
chapter, we consider a stable condensate, defined by a chemical potential,
propagating in a random disorder potential, like a liquid flowing through a
capillary. We analyze the interplay between the kinetic energy, the
localization energy, and the interaction between particles in 1D and 2D
polariton condensates. The finite life time of polaritons is taken into account
as well. In the first part, we remind the results of [G. Malpuech et al. Phys.
Rev. Lett. 98, 206402 (2007).] where we considered the case of a static
condensate. In that case, the condensate forms either a glassy insulating phase
at low polariton density (strong localization), or a superfluid phase above the
percolation threshold. We also show the calculation of the first order spatial
coherence of the condensate versus the condensate density. In the second part,
we consider the case of a propagating non-interacting condensate which is
always localized because of Anderson localization. The localization length is
calculated in the Born approximation. The impact of the finite polariton life
time is taken into account as well. In the last section we consider the case of
a propagating interacting condensate where the three regimes of strong
localization, Anderson localization, and superfluid behavior are accessible.
The localization length is calculated versus the system parameters. The
localization length is strongly modified with respect to the non-interacting
case. It is infinite in the superfluid regime whereas it is strongly reduced if

Meeting AT needs in humanitarian crises: The current state of provision
Humanitarian coordination systems increasingly recognize and aim to respond to the needs of people with disabilities within populations affected by crises, spurred on by the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) which was adopted in 2006. Many agencies state their aim to meet the requirements of the CRPD using a “twin track” approach: ensuring the inclusion of people with disabilities in mainstream provision, alongside targeted support for their needs, which may include the need for Assistive Technology (AT). However, there is very little evidence of AT provision in humanitarian settings, which is a specific and urgent need for many people including the elderly and people with disabilities, and an implicit requirement of Article 11 of the CRPD and World Health Assembly resolution on improving access to assistive technology. There is also little evidence of effective mechanisms for AT provision in humanitarian settings. This is despite high and growing levels of unmet AT need in crises, and despite the legally binding requirement in the CRPD to provide AT for those who need it. AT provision faces unique challenges in humanitarian settings. This paper discusses the evidence available in the literature for the scale and quality of AT provision interventions in crises, and what is known about the challenges and facilitators of provision. We conducted a search of the academic literature and retained literature that reported on any form of AT provision following crisis, where international humanitarian response was in place, published in English between January 2010 and June 2020. We found very few examples in that academic literature of systematic and coordinated AT provision at the acute stage of crisis, and even less in the preparedness and post-acute stages. However, it is difficult to assess whether this is the result of insufficient academic attention or reflects a lack of provision. The small body of academic literature that describes AT provision in humanitarian settings paints a picture of small-scale provision, specialized to single types of impairments, and delivered by predominantly by NGOs. We also conducted a search of the gray literature, using the same inclusion criteria, in two countries: Afghanistan and South Sudan (case studies forthcoming). This gray literature provided supplementary evidence of the types of AT providers and AT provision available in those protracted crises. There are very few examples of how AT services can be scaled up (from a very low baseline) and maintained sustainably within a strengthened health system. The literature also describes more examples of provision of assistive products for mobility over assistive products for other impairments. If the paucity of literature on AT provision in humanitarian settings is a reflection of the scale of provision, this implies a deficiency in humanitarian response when it comes to providing people with AT needs with the essential products and services to which they have a right, and which will enable their access to basic, life-saving assistance. We conclude by providing recommendations for urgent actions that the AT and humanitarian community must take to fill this critical gap in the provision of essential products and services for a potentially marginalized and excluded group
Old lineage on an old island : Pixibinthus, a new cricket genus endemic to New Caledonia shed light on gryllid diversification in a hotspot of biodiversity
Few studies have focused on the early colonization of New Caledonia by insects, after the re-emergence of the main island, 37 Myr ago. Here we investigate the mode and tempo of evolution of a new endemic cricket genus, Pixibinthus, recently discovered in southern New Caledonia. First we formally describe this new monotypic genus found exclusively in the open shrubby vegetation on metalliferous soils, named 'maquis minier', unique to New Caledonia. We then reconstruct a dated molecular phylogeny based on five mitochondrial and four nuclear loci in order to establish relationships of Pixibinthus within Eneopterinae crickets. Pixibinthus is recovered as thesister clade of the endemic genus Agnotecous, mostly rainforest-dwellers. Dating results show that the island colonization by their common ancestor occurred around 34.7 Myr, shortly after New Caledonia re-emergence. Pixibinthus and Agnotecous are then one of the oldest insect lineages documented so far for New Caledonia. This discovery highlights for the first time two clear-cut ecological specializations between sister clades, as Agnotecous is mainly found in rainforests with 19 species, whereas Pixibinthus is found in open habitats with a single documented species. The preference of Pixibinthus for open habitats and of Agnotecous for forest habitats nicely fits an acoustic specialization, either explained by differences in body size or in acoustic properties of their respective habitats. We hypothesize that landscape dynamics, linked to major past climatic events and recent change in fire regimes are possible causes for both present-day low diversity and rarity in genus Pixibinthus. The unique evolutionary history of this old New Caledonian lineage stresses the importance to increase our knowledge on the faunal biodiversity of 'maquis minier', in order to better understand the origin and past dynamics of New Caledonian biota

The effect of early pregnancy following chemotherapy on disease relapse and foetal outcome in women treated for gestational trophoblastic tumours
Little literature exists on the safety of early pregnancy following chemotherapy. Here we assess the rate of relapse and foetal outcome in women who have completed single and multi-agent chemotherapy for gestational trophoblastic tumours. The records of 1532 patients treated for persistent gestational trophoblastic tumours at Charing Cross Hospital between 1969 and 1998 were reviewed. Patients were defined as receiving single agent or multi-agent treatment. Relapse rates and foetal outcome were reviewed in the 230 patients who became pregnant within 12 months of completing chemotherapy. In the single agent group 153 (22%) of 691 patients conceived early. Three subsequently relapsed. In the multi-agent group, 77 (10%) of 779 patients conceived early, two then relapsed. Relapse rates were 2% (3 out of 153) and 2.5% (2 out of 77) for each group compared to 5% and 5.6% in the comparative non-pregnant groups. Outcomes of 230 early pregnancies: 164 (71%) delivered at full term, 35 (15%) terminations, 26 (11%) spontaneous abortions, three (1.3%) new hydatidiform moles and two (1%) stillbirths. Early pregnancies were more common in the single agent group (P<0.001), but spontaneous miscarriages and terminations were more likely to occur in the multi-agent group (P=0.04 and 0.03, respectively). Of the full-term pregnancies, three (1.8%) babies were born with congenital abnormalities. Patients in either group who conceive within 12 months of completing chemotherapy are not at increased risk of relapse. Though, we still advise avoiding pregnancy within 12 months of completing chemotherapy, those that do conceive can be reassured of a likely favourable outcome
