Mean proton and alpha-particle reduced widths of the Porter-Thomas distribution and astrophysical applications
The Porter-Thomas distribution is a key prediction of the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble in random matrix theory. It is routinely used to provide a measure for the number of levels that are missing in a given resonance analysis. The Porter-Thomas distribution is also of crucial importance for estimates of thermonuclear reaction
rates where the contributions of certain unobserved resonances to the total reaction rate need to be taken into account. In order to estimate such contributions by randomly sampling over the Porter-Thomas distribution,
the mean value of the reduced width must be known. We present mean reduced width values for protons and α particles of compound nuclei in the A = 28–67 mass range. The values are extracted from charged-particle
elastic scattering and reaction data that weremeasured at the riangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory over several decades. Our new values differ significantly from those previously reported that were based on a preliminary analysis of a smaller data set. As an example for the application of our results, we present new thermonuclear rates for the 40Ca(α,γ)44Ti reaction, which is important for 44Ti production in core-collapse supernovae, and compare with previously reported results.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
Parity Nonconservation in Neutron Resonances in 133Cs
Spatial parity nonconservation (PNC) has been studied in the compound-nuclear states of 134Cs by measuring the helicity dependence of the neutron total cross section. Transmission measurements on a thick 133Cs target were performed by the time-of-flight method at the Manuel Lujan Neutron Scattering Center with a longitudinally polarized neutron beam in the energy range from 5 to 400 eV. A total of 28 new p-wave resonances were found, their neutron widths determined, and the PNC longitudinal asymmetries of the resonance cross sections measured. The value obtained for the root-mean-square PNC element M=(0.06-0.02+0.25) meV in 133Cs is the smallest among all targets studied. This value corresponds to a weak spreading width Γw=(0.006-0.003+0.154)×10-7 eV
The Impact of Isospin Breaking on the Distribution of Transition Probabilities
In the present paper we investigate the effect of symmetry breaking in the
statistical distributions of reduced transition amplitudes and reduced
transition probabilities. These quantities are easier to access experimentally
than the components of the eigenvectors and were measured by Adams et al. for
the electromagnetic transitions in ^{26}Al. We focus on isospin symmetry
breaking described by a matrix model where both, the Hamiltonian and the
electromagnetic operator, break the symmetry. The results show that for partial
isospin conservation, the statistical distribution of the reduced transition
probability can considerably deviate from the Porter-Thomas distribution.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, submitted to PR
Mineral resource information in support of national, regional and local planning : Devon (comprising Devon, Plymouth, Torbay, Dartmoor National Park and part of Exmoor National Park)
This report is one of a series prepared by the British Geological Survey for various administrative areas in England for the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister’s research project Mineral Resource Information in Support of National, Regional and Local Planning.
The accompanying maps relate to the county of Devon and delineates the mineral resources of current, or potential, economic interest in the area and the sites where minerals are or have been worked. It also relates these to national planning designations, which may represent constraints on the extraction of minerals.
Three major elements of information are presented:
• the geological distribution and importance of mineral resources;
• the extent of mineral planning permissions and the location of current mineral workings; and
• the extent of selected, nationally-designated planning constraints.
This wide range of information, much of which is scattered and not always available in a consistent and convenient form, is presented on two digitally-generated summary map on the scale of 1:100 000. This scale is convenient for the overall display of the data and allows for a legible topographic base on which to depict the information. However, all the data are held digitally at larger scales using a Geographical Information System (GIS), which allows easy revision, updating and customisation of the information together with its possible integration with other datasets. The information will form part of a Summary of the Mineral Resources of the South West Region.
The purpose of the work is to assist all interested parties involved in the preparation and review of development plans, both in relation to the extraction of minerals and the protection of mineral resources from sterilisation. It provides a knowledge base, in a consistent format, on the nature and extent of mineral resources and the environmental constraints, which may affect their extraction. An important objective is to provide baseline data for the long term. The results may also provide a starting point for discussion on specific planning proposals for minerals extraction or on proposals, which may sterilise resources.
It is anticipated that the map and report will also provide valuable background data for a much wider audience, including the different sectors of the minerals industry, other agencies and authorities (e.g. The Planning Inspectorate Agency, the Environment Agency, The Countryside Agency and English Nature), environmental interests and the general public.
Basic mineral resource information is essential to support mineral exploration and development activities, for resource management and land-use planning, and to establish baseline data for environmental impact studies and environmental guidelines. It also enables a more sustainable pattern and standard of development to be achieved by valuing mineral resources as national assets.
The mineral resources covered are sand and gravel, crushed rock aggregate, brick clay, kaolin, ball clay, building stones, hydrocarbons and metalliferous mineralisation
Collectivity Embedded in Complex Spectra of Finite Interacting Fermi Systems: Nuclear Example
The mechanism of collectivity coexisting with chaos in a finite system of
strongly interacting fermions is investigated. The complex spectra are
represented in the basis of two-particle two-hole states describing the nuclear
double-charge exchange modes in Ca. An example of
excitations shows that the residual interaction, which generically implies
chaotic behavior, under certain specific and well identified conditions may
create strong transitions, even much stronger than those corresponding to a
pure mean-field picture. Such an effect results from correlations among the
off-diagonal matrix elements, is connected with locally reduced density of

Approximating a Behavioural Pseudometric without Discount for<br> Probabilistic Systems
Desharnais, Gupta, Jagadeesan and Panangaden introduced a family of
behavioural pseudometrics for probabilistic transition systems. These
pseudometrics are a quantitative analogue of probabilistic bisimilarity.
Distance zero captures probabilistic bisimilarity. Each pseudometric has a
discount factor, a real number in the interval (0, 1]. The smaller the discount
factor, the more the future is discounted. If the discount factor is one, then
the future is not discounted at all. Desharnais et al. showed that the
behavioural distances can be calculated up to any desired degree of accuracy if
the discount factor is smaller than one. In this paper, we show that the
distances can also be approximated if the future is not discounted. A key
ingredient of our algorithm is Tarski's decision procedure for the first order
theory over real closed fields. By exploiting the Kantorovich-Rubinstein
duality theorem we can restrict to the existential fragment for which more
efficient decision procedures exist
Modeling Complex Nuclear Spectra - Regularity versus Chaos
A statistical analysis of the spectrum of two particle - two hole doorway
states in a finite nucleus is performed. On the unperturbed mean-field level
sizable attractive correlations are present in such a spectrum. Including
particle-hole rescattering effects via the residual interaction introduces
repulsive dynamical correlations which generate the fluctuation properties
characteristic of the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble. This signals that the
underlying dynamics becomes chaotic. This feature turns out to be independent
of the detailed form of the residual interaction and hence reflects the generic

Measurement of Pion Enhancement at Low Transverse Momentum and of the Delta-Resonance Abundance in Si-Nucleus Collisions at AGS Energy
We present measurements of the pion transverse momentum (p_t) spectra in
central Si-nucleus collisions in the rapidity range 2.0<y<5.0 for p_t down to
and including p_t=0. The data exhibit an enhanced pion yield at low p_t
compared to what is expected for a purely thermal spectral shape. This
enhancement is used to determine the Delta-resonance abundance at freeze-out.
The results are consistent with a direct measurement of the Delta-resonance
yield by reconstruction of proton-pion pairs and imply a temperature of the
system at freeze-out close to 140 MeV.Comment: 12 pages + 4 figures (uuencoded at end-of-file

We explore the Delta-I= 1/2 rule and epsilon'/epsilon in K -> pi pi
transitions using a Dyson-Schwinger equation model. Exploiting the feature that
QCD penguin operators direct K^0_S transitions through 0^{++} intermediate
states, we find an explanation of the enhancement of I=0 K -> pi pi transitions
in the contribution of a light sigma-meson. This mechanism also affects
