Presynchronizing PGF2α and GnRH injections before timed artificial insemination CO-Synch + CIDR program
Fixed-time artificial insemination is an effective management tool that reduces the
labor associated with more conventional artificial insemination programs requiring
detection of estrus. The 7-day CO-Synch + controlled internal drug release (CIDR)
insert protocol has been shown to effectively initiate estrus and ovulation in cycling
and non-cycling suckled beef cows, producing pregnancy rates at or greater than 50%
in beef cows. The gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) injection that begins the
CO-Synch + CIDR program initiates ovulation in a large proportion of cows, particularly
anestrous cows. The CIDR, which releases progesterone intravaginally, prevents
short estrous cycles that usually follow the first postpartum ovulation in beef cows. Our
hypothesis was that inducing estrus with a prostaglandin injection followed 3 days later
with a GnRH injection, 7 days before applying the 7-day CO-Synch + CIDR protocol,
might increase the percentage of cycling cows that would exhibit synchronous follicular
waves after the onset of the CO-Synch + CIDR protocol. We also hypothesized that
the additional GnRH injection would increase the percentage of anestrous cows that
would ovulate, thereby increasing pregnancy outcomes
Counselling in primary care : a systematic review of the evidence
Primary objective: To undertake a systematic review which aimed to locate, appraise and synthesise evidence to obtain a reliable overview of the clinical effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and user perspectives regarding counselling in primary care.
Main results: Evidence from 26 studies was presented as a narrative synthesis and demonstrated that counselling is effective in the short term, is as effective as CBT with typical heterogeneous primary care populations and more effective than routine primary care for the treatment of non-specific generic psychological problems, anxiety and depression. Counselling may reduce levels of referrals to psychiatric services, but does not appear to reduce medication, the number of GP consultations or overall
costs. Patients are highly satisfied with the counselling they have received in primary care and prefer counselling to medication for depression.
Conclusions and implications for future research: This review demonstrates the value of counselling as a valid
choice for primary care patients and as a broadly effective therapeutic intervention for a wide range of generic psychological conditions presenting in the primary care setting. More rigorous clinical and cost-effectiveness trials are needed together with surveys of more typical users of primary care services
Camera trap distance sampling for terrestrial mammal population monitoring: lessons learnt from a UK case study
Accurate and precise density estimates are crucial for effective species management and conservation. However, efficient monitoring of mammal densities over large spatial and temporal scales is challenging. In the United Kingdom, published density estimates for many mammals, including species considered to be common, are imprecise. Camera trap distance sampling (CTDS) can estimate densities of multiple species at a time and has been used successfully in a small number of studies. However, CTDS has typically been used over relatively homogeneous landscapes, often over large time scales, making monitoring changes (by repeating surveys) difficult. In this study, we deployed camera traps at 109 sites across an area of 2725âkm2 of varied habitat in North-East England, United Kingdom. The 4-month survey generated 51â447 photos of wild mammal species. Data were sufficient for us to use CTDS to estimate the densities of eight mammal species across the whole-survey area and within four specific habitats. Both survey-wide and habitat-specific density estimates largely fell within previously published density ranges and our estimates were amongst the most precise produced for these species to date. Lower precision for some species was typically due to animals being missed by the camera at certain distances, highlighting the need for careful consideration of practical and methodological decisions, such as how high to set cameras and where to left-truncate data. Although CTDS is a promising methodology for determining densities of multiple species from one survey, species-specific decisions are still required and these cannot always be generalized across species types and locations. Taking the United Kingdom as a case study, our study highlights the potential for CTDS to be used on a national scale, although the scale of the task suggests that it would need to be integrated with a citizen science approach
Dynamical CP Violation and Flavour-Changing Processes
We investigate the phenomenological constraints on a model where, besides the
standard model Higgs sector, there is an effective new strong interaction
acting on the third generation of quarks and characterized by a -like
term. This term induces electroweak symmetry breaking and leads to
dynamical spontaneous CP violation. We show that the constraints coming from K
physics and the electric dipole moment of the neutron impose that the new
physics scale should be of the order of 35 TeV. Contrary to naive expectations,
the predictions of the model for B physics are very close to the standard model
ones. The main differences appear in processes involving the up quarks such as
mixing and in the electric dipole moment of the neutron, which
should be close to the experimental limit. Possible deviations from the
standard model predictions for CP asymmetries in B decays are also considered.Comment: LaTeX, 25 pages, 4 figure

Field localization in warped gauge theories
We present four-dimensional gauge theories that describe physics on
five-dimensional curved (warped) backgrounds, which includes bulk fields with
various spins (vectors, spinors, and scalars). Field theory on the AdS
geometry is examined as a simple example of our formulation. Various properties
of bulk fields on this background, e.g., the mass spectrum and field
localization behavior, can be achieved within a fully four-dimensional
framework. Moreover, that gives a localization mechanism for massless vector
fields. We also consider supersymmetric cases, and show in particular that the
conditions on bulk masses imposed by supersymmetry on warped backgrounds are
derived from a four-dimensional supersymmetric theory on the flat background.
As a phenomenological application, models are shown to generate hierarchical
Yukawa couplings. Finally, we discuss possible underlying mechanisms which

What makes you not a Sikh? : a preliminary mapping of values
This study sets out to establish which Sikh values contrasted with or were shared by non-Sikh adolescents. A survey of attitude toward a variety of Sikh values was fielded in a sample of 364 non-Sikh schoolchildren aged between 13 and 15 in London. Values where attitudes were least positive concerned Sikh duties/code of conduct, festivals, rituals, prayer Gurdwara attendance, listening to scripture recitation, the amrit initiation. Sikh values empathized with by non-Sikhs concerned family pride, charity, easy access to ordination and Gurdwaras, maintaining the five Ks, seeing God in all things, abstaining from meat and alcohol and belief in the stories of Guru Nanak. Further significant differences of attitude toward Sikhism were found in comparisons by sex, age and religious affiliation. Findings are applied to teaching Sikhism to pupils of no faith adherence. The study recommends the extension of values mapping to specifically Sikh populations
The health of adolescents in detention : a global scoping review
Adolescents detained within the criminal justice system are affected by complex health problems, health-risk behaviours, and high rates of premature death. We did a global synthesis of the evidence regarding the health of this population. We searched Embase, PsycINFO, Education Resources Information Center, PubMed, Web of Science, CINCH, Global Health, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, the Campbell Library, the National Criminal Justice Reference System Abstract Database, and Google Scholar for peer-reviewed journal articles, including reviews, that reported the prevalence of at least one health outcome (physical, mental, sexual, infectious, and neurocognitive) in adolescents (aged <20 years) in detention, and were published between Jan 1, 1980, and June 30, 2018. The reference lists of published review articles were scrutinised for additional relevant publications. Two reviewers independently screened titles and abstracts, and three reviewed full texts of relevant articles. The protocol for this Review was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42016041392). 245 articles (204 primary research articles and 41 reviews) were included, with most primary research (183 [90%]) done in high-income countries. A high lifetime prevalence of health problems, risks, and conditions was reported in detained adolescents, including mental disorders (0â95%), substance use disorders (22â96%), self-harm (12â65%), neurodevelopmental disabilities (2â47%), infectious diseases (0â34%), and sexual and reproductive conditions (pregnant by age 19 years 20â37%; abnormal cervical screening test result 16%). Various physical and mental health problems and health-risk behaviours are more common among adolescents in detention than among their peers who have not been detained. As the social and structural drivers of poor health overlap somewhat with factors associated with exposure to the criminal justice system, strategies to address these factors could help to reduce both rates of adolescent detention and adolescent health inequalities. Improving the detection of mental and physical disorders, providing appropriate interventions during detention, and optimising transitional health care after release from detention could improve the health outcomes of these vulnerable young people
Supersymmetric effects in top quark decay into polarized W-boson
We investigate the one-loop supersymmetric QCD (SUSY-QCD) and electroweak
(SUSY-EW) corrections to the top quark decay into a b-quark and a longitudinal
or transverse W-boson. The corrections are presented in terms of the
longitudinal ratio \Gamma(t-->W_L b)/\Gamma(t--> W b) and the transverse ratio
\Gamma(t-->W_- b)/\Gamma(t--> W b). In most of the parameter space, both
SUSY-QCD and SUSY-EW corrections to these ratios are found to be less than 1%
in magnitude and they tend to have opposite signs. The corrections to the total
width \Gamma(t-->W b) are also presented for comparison with the existing
results in the literature. We find that our SUSY-EW corrections to the total
width differ significantly from previous studies: the previous studies give a
large correction of more than 10% in magnitude for a large part of the

Results from the Antarctic Muon and Neutrino Detector Array (AMANDA)
We show new results from both the older and newer incarnations of AMANDA
(AMANDA-B10 and AMANDA-II, respectively). These results demonstrate that AMANDA
is a functioning, multipurpose detector with significant physics and
astrophysics reach. They include a new higher-statistics measurement of the
atmospheric muon neutrino flux and preliminary results from searches for a
variety of sources of ultrahigh energy neutrinos: generic point sources,
gamma-ray bursters and diffuse sources producing muons in the detector, and
diffuse sources producing electromagnetic or hadronic showers in or near the
