Selecting and preparing seed corn.
The following circular has been prepared in answer to the many letters which are being received daily asking for information regarding the purchasing and testing of seed corn and its preparation for planting.
When we consider that more than nine million acres, considerably over one-fourth of the entire area of the state, will be planted to corn the coming season and that it will require more than 1,300,000 bushels of seed to plant this area; and when we realize that the character of the seed, its vitality, breeding, purity, adaptability to the soil and climate and uniformity in both size and shape of kernels, all exercise a great influence on the future yield, the great importance of paying the closest attention to the testing and the preparation of the seed corn for the planter cannot be over estimated
The rate of convergence of Euler approximations for solutions of stochastic differential equations driven by fractional Brownian motion
The paper focuses on discrete-type approximations of solutions to
non-homogeneous stochastic differential equations (SDEs) involving fractional
Brownian motion (fBm). We prove that the rate of convergence for Euler
approximations of solutions of pathwise SDEs driven by fBm with Hurst index
can be estimated by ( is the diameter of
partition). For discrete-time approximations of Skorohod-type quasilinear
equation driven by fBm we prove that the rate of convergence is .Comment: 21 pages, (incorrect) weak convergence result removed, to appear in

The position profiles of order cancellations in an emerging stock market
Order submission and cancellation are two constituent actions of stock
trading behaviors in order-driven markets. Order submission dynamics has been
extensively studied for different markets, while order cancellation dynamics is
less understood. There are two positions associated with a cancellation, that
is, the price level in the limit-order book (LOB) and the position in the queue
at each price level. We study the profiles of these two order cancellation
positions through rebuilding the limit-order book using the order flow data of
23 liquid stocks traded on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in the year 2003. We
find that the profiles of relative price levels where cancellations occur obey
a log-normal distribution. After normalizing the relative price level by
removing the factor of order numbers stored at the price level, we find that
the profiles exhibit a power-law scaling behavior on the right tails for both
buy and sell orders. When focusing on the order cancellation positions in the
queue at each price level, we find that the profiles increase rapidly in the
front of the queue, and then fluctuate around a constant value till the end of
the queue. These profiles are similar for different stocks. In addition, the
profiles of cancellation positions can be fitted by an exponent function for
both buy and sell orders. These two kinds of cancellation profiles seem
universal for different stocks investigated and exhibit minor asymmetry between
buy and sell orders. Our empirical findings shed new light on the order
cancellation dynamics and pose constraints on the construction of order-driven
stock market models.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures and 6 table
The Galaxy Population of Cluster RXJ0848+4453 at z=1.27
We present a study of the galaxy population in the cluster RXJ0848+4453 at
z=1.27, using deep HST NICMOS and WFPC2 images. We morphologically classify all
galaxies to K_s=20.6 that are covered by the HST imaging, and determine
photometric redshifts using deep ground based BRIzJK_s photometry. Of 22 likely
cluster members with morphological classifications, eleven (50%) are classified
as early-type galaxies, nine (41%) as spiral galaxies, and two (9%) as
``merger/peculiar''. At HST resolution the second brightest cluster galaxy is
resolved into a spectacular merger between three red galaxies of similar
luminosity, separated from each other by ~6 kpc, with an integrated magnitude
K=17.6 (~3 L* at z=1.27). The two most luminous early-type galaxies also show
evidence for recent or ongoing interactions. Mergers and interactions between
galaxies are possible because RXJ0848+4453 is not yet relaxed. The fraction of
early-type galaxies in our sample is similar to that in clusters at 0.5<z<1,
and consistent with a gradual decrease of the number of early-type galaxies in
clusters from z=0 to z=1.3. We find evidence that the color-magnitude relation
of the early-type galaxies is less steep than in the nearby Coma cluster. This
may indicate that the brightest early-type galaxies have young stellar
populations at z=1.27, but is also consistent with predictions of single age
``monolithic'' models with a galactic wind. The scatter in the color-magnitude
relation is ~0.04 in rest frame U-V, similar to that in clusters at 0<z<1.
Taken together, these results show that luminous early-type galaxies exist in
clusters at z~1.3, but that their number density may be smaller than in the
local Universe. Additional observations are needed to determine whether the
brightest early-type galaxies harbor young stellar populations.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letter
A Spectroscopic Redshift Measurement for a Luminous Lyman Break Galaxy at z=7.730 using Keck/MOSFIRE
We present a spectroscopic redshift measurement of a very bright Lyman break
galaxy at z=7.7302+-0.0006 using Keck/MOSFIRE. The source was pre-selected
photometrically in the EGS field as a robust z~8 candidate with H=25.0 mag
based on optical non-detections and a very red Spitzer/IRAC [3.6]-[4.5]
broad-band color driven by high equivalent width [OIII]+Hbeta line emission.
The Lyalpha line is reliably detected at 6.1 sigma and shows an asymmetric
profile as expected for a galaxy embedded in a relatively neutral
inter-galactic medium near the Planck peak of cosmic reionization. The line has
a rest-frame equivalent width of EW0=21+-4 A and is extended with
V_FWHM=360+90-70 km/s. The source is perhaps the brightest and most massive z~8
Lyman break galaxy in the full CANDELS and BoRG/HIPPIES surveys, having
assembled already 10^(9.9+-0.2) M_sol of stars at only 650 Myr after the Big
Bang. The spectroscopic redshift measurement sets a new redshift record for
galaxies. This enables reliable constraints on the stellar mass, star-formation
rate, formation epoch, as well as combined [OIII]+Hbeta line equivalent widths.
The redshift confirms that the IRAC [4.5] photometry is very likely dominated
by line emission with EW0(OIII+Hbeta)= 720-150+180 A. This detection thus adds
to the evidence that extreme rest-frame optical emission lines are a ubiquitous
feature of early galaxies promising very efficient spectroscopic follow-up in
the future with infrared spectroscopy using JWST and, later, ELTs.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, small updates to match ApJL accepted versio
Attitudes Toward Breast Cancer Genetic Testing in Five Special Population Groups
Purpose: This study examined interest in and attitudes toward genetic testing in 5 different population groups.
Methods: The survey included African American, Asian American, Latina, Native American, and Appalachian women with varying familial histories of breast cancer. A total of 49 women were interviewed in person. Descriptive and nonparametric statistical techniques were used to assess ethnic group differences.
Results: Overall, interest in testing was high. All groups endorsed more benefits than risks. There were group differences regarding endorsement of specific benefits and risks: testing to âfollow doctor recommendationsâ (p=0.017), âconcern for effects on familyâ (p=0.044), âdistrust of modern medicineâ (p=0.036), âcostâ (p=0.025), and âconcerns about communication of results to othersâ (p=0.032). There was a significant inverse relationship between interest and genetic testing cost (p
Conclusion: Cost may be an important barrier to obtaining genetic testing services, and participants would benefit by genetic counseling that incorporates the unique cultural values and beliefs of each group to create an individualized, culturally competent program. Further research about attitudes toward genetic testing is needed among Asian Americans, Native Americans, and Appalachians for whom data are severely lacking. Future study of the different Latina perceptions toward genetic testing are encouraged
Building professional discourse in emerging markets: Language, context and the challenge of sensemaking
Using ethnographic evidence from the former Soviet republics, this article examines a relatively new and mainly unobserved in the International Business (IB) literature phenomenon of communication disengagement that manifests itself in many emerging markets. We link it to the deficiencies of the local professional business discourse rooted in language limitations reflecting lack of experience with the market economy. This hampers cognitive coherence between foreign and local business entities, adding to the liability of foreignness as certain instances of professional experience fail to find adequate linguistic expression, and complicates cross-cultural adjustments causing multi-national companies (MNCs) financial losses. We contribute to the IB literature by examining cross-border semantic sensemaking through a retrospectively constructed observational study. We argue that a relative inadequacy of the national professional idiom is likely to remain a feature of business environment in post-communist economies for some time and therefore should be factored into business strategies of MNCs. Consequently, we recommend including discursive hazards in the risk evaluation of international projects
ACS Observations of a Strongly Lensed Arc in a Field Elliptical
We report the discovery of a strongly lensed arc system around a field
elliptical galaxy in Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys
(ACS) images of a parallel field observed during NICMOS observations of the HST
Ultra-Deep Field. The ACS parallel data comprise deep imaging in the F435W,
F606W, F775W, and F850LP bandpasses. The main arc is at a radius of 1.6 arcsec
from the galaxy center and subtends about 120 deg. Spectroscopic follow-up at
Magellan Observatory yields a redshift z=0.6174 for the lensing galaxy, and we
photometrically estimate z_phot = 2.4\pm0.3 for the arc. We also identify a
likely counter-arc at a radius of 0.6 arcsec, which shows structure similar to
that seen in the main arc. We model this system and find a good fit to an
elliptical isothermal potential of velocity dispersion
\kms, the value expected from the fundamental plane, and some external shear.
Several other galaxies in the field have colors similar to the lensing galaxy
and likely make up a small group.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters. 10 pages, 3 figures. Figures

Smooth deuterated cellulose films for the visualisation of adsorbed bio-macromolecules.
Novel thin and smooth deuterated cellulose films were synthesised to visualize adsorbed bio-macromolecules using contrast variation neutron reflectivity (NR) measurements. Incorporation of varying degrees of deuteration into cellulose was achieved by growing Gluconacetobacter xylinus in deuterated glycerol as carbon source dissolved in growth media containing D2O. The derivative of deuterated cellulose was prepared by trimethylsilylation(TMS) in ionic liquid(1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride). The TMS derivative was dissolved in toluene for thin film preparation by spin-coating. The resulting film was regenerated into deuterated cellulose by exposure to acidic vapour. A common enzyme, horseradish peroxidase (HRP), was adsorbed from solution onto the deuterated cellulose films and visualized by NR. The scattering length density contrast of the deuterated cellulose enabled accurate visualization and quantification of the adsorbed HRP, which would have been impossible to achieve with non-deuterated cellulose. The procedure described enables preparing deuterated cellulose films that allows differentiation of cellulose and non-deuterated bio-macromolecules using NR
Shear dynamics in Bianchi I cosmologies with R^n-gravity
We give the equations governing the shear evolution in Bianchi spacetimes for
general f(R)-theories of gravity. We consider the case of R^n-gravity and
perform a detailed analysis of the dynamics in Bianchi I cosmologies which
exhibit local rotational symmetry. We find exact solutions and study their
behaviour and stability in terms of the values of the parameter n. In
particular, we found a set of cosmic histories in which the universe is
initially isotropic, then develops shear anisotropies which approaches a
constant value.Comment: 25 pages LaTeX, 6 figures. Revised to match the final version
