The influence of surfactants on the frog skin ion and water permeability

It is well known that sublethal doses of surfactants affect the cellular adhesion in the superficial layers of the exposed epithelia of aquatic animals, introducing a shunt in the active transport pathway, and that they are adsorbed by the cellular membranes, interacting with proteins and lipids and influencing the ion end water permeabilities. It has also been shown that the electrical behaviour of both the isolated and the \u201cin situ\u201d frog skin is heavily affected and that the isoosmotic, active transport coupled, water flow is abolished. We will propose a model for the toxic action of surfactants, based on the analysis of the decay of the electrical potential difference (pd) and short circuit current (scc), which accounts for the mentioned observations

Is legal protection sufficient to ensure plant conservation? The Italian Red List of policy species as a case study

The conservation of species listed in the Bern Convention and European Directive 1992/43/EEC (so-called policy species) is mandatory for European Union (EU) countries. We assessed the conservation status of Italian policy species, based on the IUCN categories and criteria, to evaluate the effectiveness of existing protection measures at the national level. Among the 203 vascular plants, bryophytes and lichens evaluated, 41.9% are categorized as threatened, and one is already extinct, indicating that the protection measures for policy species are inadequate. Our results for the Italian policy species are consistent with those of an assessment at the EU level. Conservation priorities should be established at both the national and regional scales. An effective conservation strategy is needed, and in situ and ex situ actions focused on threatened species should be promoted

Integrative Taxonomy of Armeria arenaria (Plumbaginaceae), with a Special Focus on the Putative Subspecies Endemic to the Apennines

Three subspecies of Armeria arenaria are reported from Italy, two of which are considered endemic to the Apennines. The taxonomic value of these two taxa (A. arenaria subsp. marginata and A. arenaria subsp. apennina) is unclear. Moreover, the relationships between A. arenaria subsp. praecox and Northern Italian populations—currently ascribed to A. arenaria subsp. arenaria—have never been addressed. Accordingly, we used an integrated taxonomic approach, including morphometry, seed morpho–colorimetry, karyology, molecular systematics (psbA–trnH, trnQ–rps16, trnF–trnL, trnL–rpl32, and ITS region), and comparative niche analysis. According to our results, French–Northern Italian populations are clearly distinct from Apennine populations. In the first group, there is evidence which allows the recognition of A. arenaria s.str. (not occurring in Italy) and A. arenaria subsp. praecox. In the second group, the two putative taxa endemic to the Northern Apennines cannot be separated, so a single subspecies is here recognized: A. arenaria subsp. marginata

Prolonged remission of disseminated atypical adenomatous hyperplasia under gefitinib.

Abstract:Atypical adenomatous hyperplasia (AAH) is a putative precursor of bronchioloalveolar carcinoma (BAC) and adenocarcinoma of the lung, developing from terminal respiratory unit cells. AAH and BAC lesions typically present as ground-glass opacities at spiral chest computed tomography. Epidermal growth factor receptor polysomy/mutations, conferring higher sensitivity to Gefitinib, are frequent in BAC but less common in AAH. We describe an interesting case of disseminated AAH showing a sustained remission under Gefitinib therapy
