Primordial black holes and asteroid danger
Probability for a primordial black hole to invade the Kuiper belt was
calculated. We showed that primordial black holes of certain masses can
significantly change asteroids' orbits. These events may result in disasters,
local for our solar system and global for the Earth (like the Tunguska
meteorite). We also estimated how often such events occur.Comment: 5 page
Benchmark on neutron capture extracted from reactions
Direct neutron capture reactions play an important role in nuclear
astrophysics and applied physics. Since for most unstable short-lived nuclei it
is not possible to measure the cross sections, reactions
have been used as an alternative indirect tool. We analyze simultaneously
at deuteron energies and 56 MeV
and the thermal reaction at 25 meV. We include results for the
ground state and the first excited state of Ca. From the low-energy
reaction, the neutron asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) is
determined. Using this ANC, we extract the spectroscopic factor (SF) from the
higher energy data and the data. The SF obtained through
the 56 MeV data are less accurate but consistent with those from the
thermal capture. We show that to have a similar dependence on the single
particle parameters as in the , the (d,p) reaction should be
measured at 30 MeV.Comment: 5 pg, 4 figs, Phys. Rev. C (rapid) in pres
Entendimento poético como entrada inicial de ser-no-mundo
Comprehension of modern poetic phenomena is based on Heidegger’s fundamental ontology and Gadamer's hermeneutics. The rhythm of poetry cuts through the inner space of a thing, as agitated movements cut through the air, and almost every poetic line exists in its own special inclination, which makes the poems become voluminous. The composition of words in poetry is shifted and relabeled as if over tightened by a single rhythmic impulse, which also changes the state of literature. The initial occurrence of being-in-the-world through poetic understanding – these are the word-whistlers and word-spells from which verses are created, can be formed (and are added) into meaningful phrases, but their nature remains the same: mental and impulsive, in fact, pre-speech. According to Heidegger, Poetry is regarded as the initial mode of realization of the language. The essence of language – speech – permeates all existentials (being-preunderstanding, mood), in its original mode, speech is revealed in the self-pronunciation of being-in-the-world, that is, in finding the word-in-being-in-the-world. Since the pronunciation of meaning in words occurs simultaneously with understanding, poetic pronunciation is the place for the most complete manifestation of meaning in language. Feasibility of a Small, Rapid Optical-to-IR Response, Next Generation Gamma Ray Burst Mission
We present motivations for and study feasibility of a small, rapid optical to
IR response gamma ray burst (GRB) space observatory. By analyzing existing GRB
data, we give realistic detection rates for X-ray and optical/IR instruments of
modest size under actual flight conditions. Given new capabilities of fast
optical/IR response (about 1 s to target) and simultaneous multi-band imaging,
such an observatory can have a reasonable event rate, likely leading to new
science. Requiring a Swift-like orbit, duty cycle, and observing constraints, a
Swift-BAT scaled down to 190 square cm of detector area would still detect and
locate about 27 GRB per yr. for a trigger threshold of 6.5 sigma. About 23
percent of X-ray located GRB would be detected optically for a 10 cm diameter
instrument (about 6 per yr. for the 6.5 sigma X-ray trigger).Comment: Elaborated text version of a poster presented at 2012 Malaga/Marbella

Stochastic Inflation Revisited: Non-Slow Roll Statistics and DBI Inflation
Stochastic inflation describes the global structure of the inflationary
universe by modeling the super-Hubble dynamics as a system of matter fields
coupled to gravity where the sub-Hubble field fluctuations induce a stochastic
force into the equations of motion. The super-Hubble dynamics are ultralocal,
allowing us to neglect spatial derivatives and treat each Hubble patch as a
separate universe. This provides a natural framework in which to discuss
probabilities on the space of solutions and initial conditions. In this article
we derive an evolution equation for this probability for an arbitrary class of
matter systems, including DBI and k-inflationary models, and discover
equilibrium solutions that satisfy detailed balance. Our results are more
general than those derived assuming slow roll or a quasi-de Sitter geometry,
and so are directly applicable to models that do not satisfy the usual slow
roll conditions. We discuss in general terms the conditions for eternal
inflation to set in, and we give explicit numerical solutions of highly
stochastic, quasi-stationary trajectories in the relativistic DBI regime.
Finally, we show that the probability for stochastic/thermal tunneling can be
significantly enhanced relative to the Hawking-Moss instanton result due to
relativistic DBI effects.Comment: 38 pages, 2 figures. v3: minor revisions; version accepted into JCA
HugeNon-Organ Retroperitoneal Tumor inCombination with aCystoma of Uterine Appendages
The article describes the experience of successful diagnostics and treatment of giant non-organ extraperitoneal tumor combined with a cystoma of uterine appendages.Patient P., 43 years old, was hospitalized in the oncology department, diagnosed with “Abdominal tumor, right ovary?” The state was satisfactory, after palpation of the abdomen, a lumpy formation of a densely elastic consistency, from the womb to the epigastric region, was found. An ultrasound revealed a homogeneous tumor formation 30×28 cm from the border of the uterus to the liver. When performing median laparotomy, a dumbbell-shaped tumor (36×26×20 cm) was found in the retroperitoneal space with involvement of the mesentery of the small intestine, lower horizontal portion of the duodenum, mesentery of the transverse colon, superior mesenteric vessels, aorta and jejunum. In the right appendages, a cystoma 12–15 cm in diameter was found, with inversion and necrosis. Adnexectomy was performed. An express lymph node biopsy revealed cells suspicious for malignancy. The tumor was mobilized and removed as a single unit with retroperitoneal tissue, lymph nodes in combination with resection of 70 cm of the jejunum and fenestrated resection of the duodenum. The resulting gut defect 9×7 cm was sutured with a precision single-row suture. Inter-intestinal anastomosis “endto-end” was formed. Nasointestinal intubation was performed. The abdominal cavity was sutured, and two tubular drainages were installed. The postoperative period was uneventful. The histological conclusion: fibrous histiocytoma of the mesentery of the intestine with malignancy in the center of the node, in the ovary – total hemorrhagic infiltration of all layers, edema. The tumor conference consultation was recommended. After 1.5 years, the patient was admitted with the same clinical picture. During laparotomy, a tumor recurrence was discovered, the nodes of which were located in the retroperitoneal space, in the abdominal cavity with invasion to organs and large vessels. The case was recognized as inoperable, the laparotomic wound was closed completely. Sixteen days after surgery the patient was discharged
Reversible Pressure-Induced Amorphization in Solid C70 : Raman and Photoluminescence Study
We have studied single crystals of by Raman scattering and
photoluminescence in the pressure range from 0 to 31.1 GPa. The Raman spectrum
at 31.1 GPa shows only a broad band similar to that of the amorphous carbon
without any trace of the Raman lines of . After releasing the pressure
from 31.1 GPa, the Raman and the photoluminescence spectra of the recovered
sample are that of the starting crystal. These results indicate that
the molecules are stable upto 31.1 GPa and the amorphous carbon high
pressure phase is reversible, in sharp contrast to the results on solid
. A qualitative explaination is suggested in terms of inter- versus
intra-molecular interactions.Comment: To appear in Phys. Rev. Lett., 12 pages, RevTeX (preprint format), 3

Circles in the Sky: Finding Topology with the Microwave Background Radiation
If the universe is finite and smaller than the distance to the surface of
last scatter, then the signature of the topology of the universe is writ large
on the microwave background sky. We show that the microwave background will be
identified at the intersections of the surface of last scattering as seen by
different ``copies'' of the observer. Since the surface of last scattering is a
two-sphere, these intersections will be circles, regardless of the background
geometry or topology. We therefore propose a statistic that is sensitive to all
small, locally homogeneous topologies. Here, small means that the distance to
the surface of last scatter is smaller than the ``topology scale'' of the
universe.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, IOP format. This paper is a direct descendant

Scaling of THz-conductivity at metal-insulator transition in doped manganites
Magnetic field and temperature dependence of the Terahertz conductivity and
permittivity of the colossal magnetoresistance manganite
Pr_{0.65}Ca_{0.28}Sr_{0.07}MnO_3 (PCSMO) is investigated approaching the
metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) from the insulating side. In the
charge-ordered state of PCSMO both conductivity and dielectric permittivity
increase as function of magnetic field and temperature. Universal scaling
relationships between the changes in permittivity and conductivity are observed
in a broad range of temperatures and magnetic fields. Similar scaling is also
seen in La_{1-x}Sr_xMnO_3 for different doping levels. The observed
proportionality points towards the importance of pure ac-conductivity and
phononic energy scale at MIT in manganites.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
