Multi-layer model for the web graph
This paper studies stochastic graph models of the WebGraph. We present a new model that describes the WebGraph as an ensemble of different regions generated by independent stochastic processes (in the spirit of a recent paper by Dill et al. [VLDB 2001]). Models such as the Copying Model [17] and Evolving Networks Model [3] are simulated and compared on several relevant measures such as degree and clique distribution
Gel Electrophoresis of DNA Knots in Weak and Strong Electric Fields
Gel electrophoresis allows to separate knotted DNA (nicked circular) of equal
length according to the knot type. At low electric fields, complex knots being
more compact, drift faster than simpler knots. Recent experiments have shown
that the drift velocity dependence on the knot type is inverted when changing
from low to high electric fields. We present a computer simulation on a lattice
of a closed, knotted, charged DNA chain drifting in an external electric field
in a topologically restricted medium. Using a simple Monte Carlo algorithm, the
dependence of the electrophoretic migration of the DNA molecules on the type of
knot and on the electric field intensity was investigated. The results are in
qualitative agreement with electrophoretic experiments done under conditions of
low and high electric fields: especially the inversion of the behavior from low
to high electric field could be reproduced. The knot topology imposes on the
problem the constrain of self-avoidance, which is the final cause of the
observed behavior in strong electric field.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figure
Ecology of endolithic lichens colonizing granite in continental Antarctica
In this study, the symbiont cells of several endolithic lichens colonizing granite in continental Antarctica and the relationships they have with the abiotic environment were analyzed in situ, in order to characterize the microecosystems integrating these lichens, from a microecological perspective. Mycobiont and photobiont cells, the majority classified as living by fluorescent vitality testing, were observed distributed through the fissures of the granite. The fact that extracellular polymeric substances were commonly observed close to these cells and the features of these compounds, suggest a certain protective role for these substances against the harsh environmental conditions. Different chemical, physical and biological relationships take place within the endolithic biofilms where the lichens are found, possibly affecting the survival and distribution of these organisms. The alteration of bedrock minerals and synthesis of biominerals in the proximity of these lichens give rise to different chemical microenvironments and suggest their participation in mineral nutrient cycling
Adriamycin-loaded albumin-heparin conjugate microspheres for intraperitoneal chemotherapy
Adriamycin-loaded albumin-heparin conjugate microspheres (ADR-AHCMS) were evaluated as possible intraperitoneal (i.p.) delivery systems for site-specific cytotoxic action. The biocompatibility of the microspheres after intraperitoneal injection was tested first. 1 day after i.p. administration of empty as well as drug-loaded AHCMS to male Balb/c mice, only a moderate increase in i.p. neutrophils was measured. 3 days after injection neutrophil levels were comparable with the controls. No significant increases in the numbers of other cell types were observed, indicating an acute inflammatory response which can be considered to be mild. Antitumour efficacy was tested in an L1210 tumour-bearing mouse model and in a CC531 tumour-bearing rat model. The use of ADR-AHCMS leads to longer survival times of mice and improved tumour growth delay in rats, as compared with untreated controls and free drug treated animals. In both animal models higher adriamycin doses were initially tolerated if the drug was formulated in microspheres, although long-term adriamycin toxicity effects were evident in all treated groups. Doses and dosage schedules may be optimized to further reduce the toxic effects of the drug

An ultrahigh-speed digitizer for the Harvard College Observatory astronomical plates
A machine capable of digitizing two 8 inch by 10 inch (203 mm by 254 mm)
glass astrophotographic plates or a single 14 inch by 17 inch (356 mm by 432
mm) plate at a resolution of 11 microns per pixel or 2309 dots per inch (dpi)
in 92 seconds is described. The purpose of the machine is to digitize the
\~500,000 plate collection of the Harvard College Observatory in a five year
time frame. The digitization must meet the requirements for scientific work in
astrometry, photometry, and archival preservation of the plates. This paper
describes the requirements for and the design of the subsystems of the machine
