The high-energy gamma-ray light curve of PSR B1259 -63
The high-energy gamma-ray light curve of the binary system PSR B1259 -63, is
computed using the approach that successfully predicted the spectrum at
periastron. The simultaneous INTEGRAL and H.E.S.S. spectra taken 16 days after
periastron currently permit both a model with dominant radiative losses, high
pulsar wind Lorentz factor and modest efficiency as well as one with dominant
adiabatic losses, a slower wind and higher efficiency. In this paper we shown

Stratospheric column NO2 measurements from three Antarctic sites
The significance of stratospheric odd-nitrogen compounds in Antarctic ozone depletion studies has prompted an increase in Antarctic activities. Although several species are being studied, work has concentrated on the acquisition of NO2 data. Ground-based measurements of stratospheric column NO2 have been made at Arrival Heights, Antarctica, since spring 1982, with some gaps in the data base. Additional data has been acquired since February 1986 at Pole Station and Halley Bay, thus providing a chain of stations across the continent. The technique used is that of absorption spectroscopy in several wavelength regions, although here only those measurements are reported in the 430 to 450 nm region where strongly structured absorption been determined experimentally. However, theory features due to NO2 are identified in scattered sunlight in the zenith sky. Operation of a moon-tracking system at Arrival Heights has provided some additional data during the polar night. Previous analyses have shown that the NO2 column observed from the ground is strongly influenced by the season, and by the location of the site with respect to that of the polar vortex. The column amount correlates strongly with stratospheric temperature at about 70 mbar. The present data set further illustrates these features, and demonstrates both the strengths and qualifications apparent in the technique

Synthesis, Structure, and Ferromagnetism of a New Oxygen Defect Pyrochlore System Lu2V2O_{7-x} (x = 0.40-0.65)
A new fcc oxygen defect pyrochlore structure system Lu2V2O_{7-x} with x =
0.40 to 0.65 was synthesized from the known fcc ferromagnetic semiconductor
pyrochlore compound Lu2V2O7 which can be written as Lu2V2O6O' with two
inequivalent oxygen sites O and O'. Rietveld x-ray diffraction refinements
showed significant Lu-V antisite disorder for x >= 0.5. The lattice parameter
versus x (including x = 0) shows a distinct maximum at x ~ 0.4. We propose that
these observations can be explained if the oxygen defects are on the O'
sublattice of the structure. The magnetic susceptibility versus temperature
exhibits Curie-Weiss behavior above 150 K for all x, with a Curie constant C
that increases with x as expected in an ionic model. However, the magnetization
measurements also show that the (ferromagnetic) Weiss temperature theta and the
ferromagnetic ordering temperature T_C both strongly decrease with increasing x
instead of increasing as expected from C(x). The T_C decreases from 73 K for x
= 0 to 21 K for x = 0.65. Furthermore, the saturation moment at a field of 5.5
T at 5 K is nearly independent of x, with the value expected for a fixed spin
1/2 per V. The latter three observations suggest that Lu2V2O_{7-x} may contain
localized spin 1/2 vanadium moments in a metallic background that is induced by
oxygen defect doping, instead of being a semiconductor as suggested by the C(x)

The Advanced Composites Technology (ACT) program is seeking research breakthroughs that will allow structures made of graphite epoxy materials to replace metals in the wings and fuselages of future aircrafts. NASA's goals are to reduce acquisition cost by 20 to 25 percent, structural weight for a resized aircraft by 40 to 50 percent, and the number of parts by half compared to current production aluminum aircraft. The innovative structural concepts, materials, and fabrication techniques emerging from the ACT program are described, and the relationship between aerospace developments and industrial, commercial, and sporting goods applications are discussed
Functional specialization of the yeast Rho1 GTP exchange factors
Rho GTPases are regulated in complex spatiotemporal patterns that may be dependent, in part at least, on the multiplicity of their GTP exchange factors (GEFs). Here, we examine the extent of and basis for functional specialization of the Rom2 and Tus1 GEFs that activate the yeast Rho1 GTPase, the ortholog of mammalian RhoA. First, we find that these GEFs selectively activate different Rho1-effector branches. Second, the synthetic genetic networks around ROM2 and TUS1 confirm very different global in vivo roles for these GEFs. Third, the GEFs are not functionally interchangeable: Tus1 cannot replace the essential role of Rom2, even when overexpressed. Fourth, we find that Rom2 and Tus1 localize differently: Rom2 to the growing bud surface and to the bud neck at cytokinesis; Tus1 only to the bud neck but in a distinct pattern. Finally, we find that these GEFs are dependent on different protein co-factors: Rom2 function and localization is largely dependent on Ack1, a SEL1 domain containing protein; Tus1 function and localization is largely dependent on the Tus1-interacting protein Ypl066w (which we name Rgl1). We have revealed a surprising level of diversity among the Rho1 GEFs that contributes another level of complexity to the spatiotemporal control of Rho1

Evidence for alignment of the rotation and velocity vectors in pulsars. II. Further data and emission heights
We have conducted observations of 22 pulsars at frequencies of 0.7, 1.4 and
3.1 GHz and present their polarization profiles. The observations were carried
out for two main purposes. First we compare the orientation of the spin and
velocity vectors to verify the proposed alignment of these vectors by Johnston
et al. (2005). We find, for the 14 pulsars for which we were able to determine
both vectors, that 7 are plausibly aligned, a fraction which is lower than, but
consistent with, earlier measurements. Secondly, we use profiles obtained
simultaneously at widely spaced frequencies to compute the radio emission
heights. We find, similar to other workers in the field, that radiation from
the centre of the profile originates from lower in the magnetosphere than the
radiation from the outer parts of the profile.Comment: Accepted by MNRAS. 14 page
