Capacitive Coupling of Two Transmission Line Resonators Mediated by the Phonon Number of a Nanoelectromechanical Oscillator
Detection of quantum features in mechanical systems at the nanoscale
constitutes a challenging task, given the weak interaction with other elements
and the available technics. Here we describe how the interaction between two
monomodal transmission-line resonators (TLRs) mediated by vibrations of a
nano-electromechanical oscillator can be described. This scheme is then
employed for quantum non-demolition detection of the number of phonons in the
nano-electromechanical oscillator through a direct current measurement in the
output of one of the TLRs. For that to be possible an undepleted field inside
one of the TLR works as a amplifier for the interaction between the mechanical
resonator and the remaining TLR. We also show how how the non-classical nature
of this system can be used for generation of tripartite entanglement and
conditioned mechanical coherent superposition states, which may be further

Nonzero orbital angular momentum superfluidity in ultracold Fermi gases
We analyze the evolution of superfluidity for nonzero orbital angular
momentum channels from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) to the Bose-Einstein
condensation (BEC) limit in three dimensions. First, we analyze the low energy
scattering properties of finite range interactions for all possible angular
momentum channels. Second, we discuss ground state () superfluid
properties including the order parameter, chemical potential, quasiparticle
excitation spectrum, momentum distribution, atomic compressibility, ground
state energy and low energy collective excitations. We show that a quantum
phase transition occurs for nonzero angular momentum pairing, unlike the s-wave
case where the BCS to BEC evolution is just a crossover. Third, we present a
gaussian fluctuation theory near the critical temperature (),
and we analyze the number of bound, scattering and unbound fermions as well as
the chemical potential. Finally, we derive the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau
functional near , and compare the Ginzburg-Landau coherence length
with the zero temperature average Cooper pair size.Comment: 28 pages and 24 figure
Assessing seismic damage through stochastic simulation of ground shaking: the case of the 1998 Faial Earthquake (Azores Islands)
In July 1998, an Mw = 6.2 earthquake struck the islands of Faial, Pico and San Jorge (in the Azores Archipelago), registering VIII on the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale and causing major destruction in the northeastern part of Faial. The main shock was located offshore, 8 km North East of the island, and it triggered a seismic sequence that lasted for several weeks. The existing data for this earthquake include both the general tectonic environment of the region and the teleseismic information. This is accompanied by one strong-motion record obtained 15 km from the epicentre, the epicentre location of aftershocks, and a large collection of the damage inflicted to the building stock (as poor rubble masonry, of 2-3 storeys). The present study was carried out in two steps: first, with a finite-fault stochastic simulation method of ground motion at sites throughout the affected islands, for two possible locations of the rupturing fault and for a large number of combinations of rupture mechanisms (as a parametric analysis); secondly, the damage to buildings was modelled using a well-known macroseismic method that considers the building typologies and their associated vulnerabilities. The main intent was to integrate different data (geological, seismological and building features) to produce a scenario model to reproduce and justify the level of damage generated during the Faial earthquake. Finally, through validation of the results provided by these different approaches, we obtained a complete procedure for the parameters of a first model for the production of seismic damage scenarios for the Azores Islands region
Resíduo desidratado de vitivinícolas do Vale do São Francisco associado a diferentes fontes energéticas na alimentação de ovinos: digestibilidade aparente.
A digestibilidade aparente de nutrientes foi determinadas em ovinos confinados, objetivando avaliar a combinação do resíduo desidratado de vitivinícolas a diferentes fontes energéticas. Foram utilizados 18 ovinos machos com idade aproximada de sete meses, sem padrão racial definido, com peso vivo médio inicial de 21,8 kg. As dietas compostas de 50% de resíduo de vitivinícolas e 50% de concentrados energéticos: grão de milho moído (Zea mays), raspa de mandioca (Manihot esculenta) enriquecida com 1,8% de uréia e farelo de palma forrageira (Opuntia ficus) enriquecido com 1,1% de uréia. As digestibilidades da matéria seca, proteína bruta e fibra em detergente neutro foram de 52,89, 47,12 e 42,37; 54, 36, 49, 63 e 54, 95; 36,96 34,22 e 32,82%, respectivamente para as dietas de grão de milho moído que apresentaram os maiores coeficientes, raspa de mandioca e farelo de palma. Os resultados obtidos para o consumo e para a digestibilidade aparente dos nutrientes, revelaram o bom potencial do resíduo de vitivinícolas em combinação as fontes energéticas estudadas, podendo se transformar em uma nova opção alimentar para ovinos no Nordeste do Brasil
Coccolithophore fluxes in the open tropical North Atlantic: influence of thermocline depth, Amazon water, and Saharan dust
Coccolithophores are calcifying phytoplankton and major contributors to both the organic and inorganic oceanic carbon pumps. Their export fluxes, species composition, and seasonal patterns were determined in two sediment trap moorings (M4 at 12 degrees N, 49 degrees W and M2 at 14 degrees N, 37 degrees W) collecting settling particles synchronously from October 2012 to November 2013 at 1200 m of water depth in the open equatorial North Atlantic. The two trap locations showed a similar seasonal pattern in total coccolith export fluxes and a predominantly tropical coccolithophore settling assemblage. Species fluxes were dominated throughout the year by lower photic zone (LPZ) taxa (Florisphaera profunda, Gladiolithus flabellatus) but also included upper photic zone (UPZ) taxa (Umbellosphaera spp., Rhabdosphaera spp., Umbilicosphaera spp., Helicosphaera spp.). The LPZ flora was most abundant during fall 2012, whereas the UPZ flora was more important during summer. In spite of these similarities, the western part of the study area produced persistently higher fluxes, averaging 241 x 10(7) +/- 76 x 10(7) coccoliths m(-2) d(-1) at station M4 compared to only 66 x 10(7) +/- 31 x 10(7) coccoliths m(-2) d(-1) at station M2. Higher fluxes at M4 were mainly produced by the LPZ species, favoured by the westward deepening of the thermocline and nutricline. Still, most UPZ species also contributed to higher fluxes, reflecting enhanced productivity in the western equatorial North Atlantic. Such was the case of two marked flux peaks of the more opportunistic species Gephyrocapsa muellerae and Emiliania huxleyi in January and April 2013 at M4, indicating a fast response to the nutrient enrichment of the UPZ, probably by wind-forced mixing. Later, increased fluxes of G. oceanica and E. huxleyi in October-November 2013 coincided with the occurrence of Amazon-River-affected surface waters. Since the spring and fall events of 2013 were also accompanied by two dust flux peaks, we propose a scenario in which atmospheric dust also provided fertilizing nutrients to this area. Enhanced surface buoyancy associated with the river plume indicates that the Amazon acted not only as a nutrient source, but also as a surface density retainer for nutrients supplied from the atmosphere. Nevertheless, lower total coccolith fluxes during these events compared to the maxima recorded in November 2012 and July 2013 indicate that transient productivity by opportunistic species was less important than "background" tropical productivity in the equatorial North Atlantic. This study illustrates how two apparently similar sites in the tropical open ocean actually differ greatly in ecological and oceanographic terms. Radiative accretion shocks along nonuniform stellar magnetic fields in classical T Tauri stars
(abridged) AIMS. We investigate the dynamics and stability of post-shock
plasma streaming along nonuniform stellar magnetic fields at the impact region
of accretion columns. We study how the magnetic field configuration and
strength determine the structure, geometry, and location of the shock-heated
plasma. METHODS. We model the impact of an accretion stream onto the
chromosphere of a CTTS by 2D axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamic simulations. Our
model takes into account the gravity, the radiative cooling, and the
magnetic-field-oriented thermal conduction. RESULTS. The structure, stability,
and location of the shocked plasma strongly depend on the configuration and
strength of the magnetic field. For weak magnetic fields, a large component of
B may develop perpendicular to the stream at the base of the accretion column,
limiting the sinking of the shocked plasma into the chromosphere. An envelope
of dense and cold chromospheric material may also develop around the shocked
column. For strong magnetic fields, the field configuration determines the
position of the shock and its stand-off height. If the field is strongly
tapered close to the chromosphere, an oblique shock may form well above the
stellar surface. In general, a nonuniform magnetic field makes the distribution
of emission measure vs. temperature of the shocked plasma lower than in the
case of uniform magnetic field. CONCLUSIONS. The initial strength and
configuration of the magnetic field in the impact region of the stream are
expected to influence the chromospheric absorption and, therefore, the
observability of the shock-heated plasma in the X-ray band. The field strength
and configuration influence also the energy balance of the shocked plasma, its
emission measure at T > 1 MK being lower than expected for a uniform field. The
above effects contribute in underestimating the mass accretion rates derived in

The evolution from BCS to BEC superfluidity in the presence of disorder
We describe the effects of disorder on the critical temperature of -wave
superfluids from the BCS to the BEC regime, with direct application to
ultracold fermions. We use the functional integral method and the replica
technique to study Gaussian correlated disorder due to impurities, and we
discuss how this system can be generated experimentally. In the absence of
disorder, the BCS regime is characterized by pair breaking and phase coherence
temperature scales which are essentially the same allowing strong correlations
between the amplitude and phase of the order parameter for superfluidity. As
non-pair breaking disorder is introduced the largely overlapping Cooper pairs
conspire to maintain phase coherence such that the critical temperature remains
essentially unchanged, and Anderson's theorem is satisfied. However in the BEC
regime the pair breaking and phase coherence temperature scales are very
different such that non-pair breaking disorder can affect dramatically phase
coherence, and thus the critical temperature, without the requirement of
breaking tightly-bound fermion pairs simultaneously. In this case, Anderson's
theorem does not apply, and the critical temperature can be more easily reduced
in comparison to the BCS limit. Lastly, we find that the superfluid is more
robust against disorder in the intermediate region near unitarity between the
two regimes
