    Permissive Controller Synthesis for Probabilistic Systems

    We propose novel controller synthesis techniques for probabilistic systems modelled using stochastic two-player games: one player acts as a controller, the second represents its environment, and probability is used to capture uncertainty arising due to, for example, unreliable sensors or faulty system components. Our aim is to generate robust controllers that are resilient to unexpected system changes at runtime, and flexible enough to be adapted if additional constraints need to be imposed. We develop a permissive controller synthesis framework, which generates multi-strategies for the controller, offering a choice of control actions to take at each time step. We formalise the notion of permissivity using penalties, which are incurred each time a possible control action is disallowed by a multi-strategy. Permissive controller synthesis aims to generate a multi-strategy that minimises these penalties, whilst guaranteeing the satisfaction of a specified system property. We establish several key results about the optimality of multi-strategies and the complexity of synthesising them. Then, we develop methods to perform permissive controller synthesis using mixed integer linear programming and illustrate their effectiveness on a selection of case studies

    The Solar Radius in the EUV during the Cycle XXIII

    Aims. To determine the solar transition region and coronal radius at EUV wavelengths and its time evolution during Solar Cycle XXIII. Methods. We use daily 30.4 and 17.1 nm images obtained by the Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EIT) aboard the SoHO satellite and derive the solar radius by fitting a circle to the limb brightness ring. Results. The weighted mean of the temporal series gives (967''.56 +/- 0''.04) and (969''.54 +/- 0''.02) at 30.4 and 17.1 nm respectively. No significant correlation was found with the solar cycle at any of the two wavelengths. Conclusions. Since the temperature formation of the 30.4 nm line is between (60 - 80) 10^3 K (Transition Region), the obtained result is bigger than that derived from present atmospheric models.     Cancer symptom awareness and barriers to medical help seeking in Scottish adolescents:a cross-sectional study

    Background: Initiatives to promote early diagnosis include raising public awareness of signs and symptoms ofcancer and addressing barriers to seeking medical help about cancer. Awareness of signs and symptoms of cancerand emotional barriers, such as, fear, worry, and embarrassment strongly influence help seeking behaviour. Whetheranxiety influences seeking medical help about cancer is not known. The purpose of this study about adolescentswas to examine: 1) the relationship between contextual factors and awareness of signs and symptoms of cancerand barriers (including emotional barriers) to seeking medical help, and 2) associations between anxiety andendorsed barriers to seeking medical help. Interpretation of data is informed by the common sense model of theself-regulation of health and illness.Methods: A cross-sectional study of 2,173 Scottish adolescents (age 12/13 years) using the Cancer AwarenessMeasure. Socio-demographic questions were also included. Descriptive statistics were calculated and two Poissonregression models were built to determine independent predictors of: 1) the number of cancer warning signsrecognized, and; 2) number of barriers to help seeking endorsed.Results: Analysis identified that knowing someone with cancer was a significant independent predictor ofrecognising more cancer warning signs whereas Black and Minority Ethnic status was a significant independentpredictor of recognising fewer cancer warning signs. Emotional barriers were the most commonly endorsed,followed by family, service and practical barriers. Over two thirds of adolescents were ‘worried about what thedoctor would find’ and over half were ‘scared’. Higher anxiety scores, knowing more cancer warning signs andfemale gender were significant independent predictors of barriers to help seeking.Conclusion: Improving cancer awareness and help seeking behaviour during adolescence may contribute to earlypresentation. Contextual factors (for example, ethnicity, gender, knowing someone with cancer), and emotionaldimensions (for example, anxiety, fear, worry) are critical components in help seeking behaviours. The role ofemotional factors indicates that public health campaigns focused on awareness and help seeking may benefit fromhaving a more emotional focus, for example, including references to feelings, such as, fears and worries

    AbstractBackgroundLiver disease is an important complication in CF.AimsTo determine if CFLD is a risk factor for mortality in CF, and which baseline characteristics predict all-cause mortality.MethodsIrish children with CFLD, and their age and gender matched controls were enrolled at baseline and reviewed after 10years to determine which characteristics predict mortality.Results72/84 (85.71%) participants were followed, (mean age Cases 21.71yrs SD 6.5, CF controls 23.62 SD 5.6, 22 (61%) males), with no difference in duration of follow-up. Nineteen participants (26.4%) died, 38.9% (14/36) with CFLD and 13.89% (5/36) CF controls (Odds Ratio (OR) 3.94 95% CI:1.23–12.56 p=0.005). In logistic regression, liver disease (OR 4.28 95% CI 1.07–17.16) female gender (OR 12.25 95% CI 2.37–63.24), reduced pulmonary function, (OR 5.11 95% CI 1.09–23.81) were each independent risk factors for mortality in CF.ConclusionsLiver disease is an independent risk factor for mortality in CF

    Fast Road Sign Detection Using Hough Transform for Assisted Driving of Road Vehicles

    Abstract. A system for real-time traffic sign detection is described in this paper. The system uses restricted Hough transform for circumferences in order to detect circular signs, and for straight lines for triangular ones. Some results obtained from a set of real road images captured under both normal and adverse weather conditions are presented as well in order to illustrate the robustness of the detection system. The average processing time is 30 ms per frame, what makes the system a good approach to work in real time conditions.

    If, as Adam Smith once famously suggested, Britain was a nation of shopkeepers then it is now a nation of shopworkers. Retail is now a significant part of the UK economy, accounting for ÂŁ256 billion in sales and one-third of all consumer spending (Skillsmart, 2007). It is the largest private sector employer in the UK, employing 3m workers, or 1 in 10 of the working population. For future job creation in the UK economy retail is also similarly prominent and the sector is expected to create a further 250,000 jobs to 2014 (Skillsmart, 2007). The centrality of retail to economic success and job creation is apparent in other advanced economies. For example, within the US, retail sales is the occupation with the largest projected job growth in the period 2004-2014 (Gatta et al., 2009) and in Australia retail accounts for 1 in 6 workers (Buchanan et al., 2003). Within the UK these workers are employed in approximately 290,000 businesses, encompassing large and small organizations and also a number of sub-sectors. This variance suggests that retail should not be regarded as homogenous in its labour demands. Hart et al. (2007) note how skill requirements and the types of workers employed may differ across the sector. This chapter further opens up this point, providing an analysis of the labour supply and skills demands for the sub-sectors of clothing, footwear and leather goods, which are described by Skillsmart (2007: 48) as being 'significant categories in UK retailing'

    Augmented reality applications for cultural heritage using Kinect

    AbstractThis paper explores the use of data from the Kinect sensor for performing augmented reality, with emphasis on cultural heritage applications. It is shown that the combination of depth and image correspondences from the Kinect can yield a reliable estimate of the location and pose of the camera, though noise from the depth sensor introduces an unpleasant jittering of the rendered view. Kalman filtering of the camera position was found to yield a much more stable view. Results show that the system is accurate enough for in situ augmented reality applications. Skeleton tracking using Kinect data allows the appearance of participants to be augmented, and together these facilitate the development of cultural heritage applications.</jats:p

    Unsupervised Polygonal Reconstruction of Noisy Contours by a Discrete Irregular Approach

    International audienceIn this paper, we present an original algorithm to build a polygonal reconstruction of noisy digital contours. For this purpose, we first improve an algorithm devoted to the vectorization of discrete irregular isothetic objects. Afterwards we propose to use it to define a reconstruction process of noisy digital contours. More precisely, we use a local noise detector, introduced by Kerautret and Lachaud in IWCIA 2009, that builds a multi-scale representation of the digital contour, which is composed of pixels of various size depending of the local amount of noise. Finally, we compare our approach with previous works, by con- sidering the Hausdorff distance and the error on tangent orientations of the computed line segments to the original perfect contour. Thanks to both synthetic and real noisy objects, we show that our approach has interesting performance, and could be applied in document analysis systems

    Capturing Hammerhead Ribozyme Structures in Action by Modulating General Base Catalysis

    We have obtained precatalytic (enzyme–substrate complex) and postcatalytic (enzyme–product complex) crystal structures of an active full-length hammerhead RNA that cleaves in the crystal. Using the natural satellite tobacco ringspot virus hammerhead RNA sequence, the self-cleavage reaction was modulated by substituting the general base of the ribozyme, G12, with A12, a purine variant with a much lower pKa that does not significantly perturb the ribozyme's atomic structure. The active, but slowly cleaving, ribozyme thus permitted isolation of enzyme–substrate and enzyme–product complexes without modifying the nucleophile or leaving group of the cleavage reaction, nor any other aspect of the substrate. The predissociation enzyme-product complex structure reveals RNA and metal ion interactions potentially relevant to transition-state stabilization that are absent in precatalytic structures
