Comment on "Order parameter of A-like 3He phase in aerogel"
We argue that the inhomogeneous A-phase in aerogel is energetically more
preferable than the "robust" phase suggested by I. A. Fomin, JETP Lett. 77, 240

Instability of antiferromagnetic magnons in strong fields
We predict that spin-waves in an ordered quantum antiferromagnet (AFM) in a
strong magnetic field become unstable with respect to spontaneous two-magnon
decays. At zero temperature, the instability occurs between the threshold field
and the saturation field . As an example, we investigate the
high-field dynamics of a Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a square lattice and
show that the single-magnon branch of the spectrum disappears in the most part

Magnetocaloric effect in integrable spin-s chains
We study the magnetocaloric effect for the integrable antiferromagnetic
high-spin chain. We present an exact computation of the Gr\"uneisen parameter,
which is closely related to the magnetocaloric effect, for the quantum spin-s
chain on the thermodynamical limit by means of Bethe ansatz techniques and the
quantum transfer matrix approach. We have also calculated the entropy S and the
isentropes in the (H,T) plane. We have been able to identify the quantum
critical points H_c^{(s)}=2/(s+1/2) looking at the isentropes and/or the
characteristic behaviour of the Gr\"uneisen parameter.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
Lifetime of Gapped Excitations in a Collinear Quantum Antiferromagnet
We demonstrate that local modulations of magnetic couplings have a profound
effect on the temperature dependence of the relaxation rate of optical magnons
in a wide class of antiferromagnets in which gapped excitations coexist with
acoustic spin waves. In a two-dimensional collinear antiferromagnet with an
easy-plane anisotropy, the disorder-induced relaxation rate of the gapped mode,
Gamma_imp=Gamma_0+A(TlnT)^2, greatly exceeds the magnon-magnon damping,
Gamma_m-m=BT^5, negligible at low temperatures. We measure the lifetime of
gapped magnons in a prototype XY antiferromagnet BaNi2(PO4)2 using a
high-resolution neutron-resonance spin-echo technique and find experimental
data in close accord with the theoretical prediction. Similarly strong effects
of disorder in the three-dimensional case and in noncollinear antiferromagnets

The sawtooth chain: From Heisenberg spins to Hubbard electrons
We report on recent studies of the spin-half Heisenberg and the Hubbard model
on the sawtooth chain. For both models we construct a class of exact
eigenstates which are localized due to the frustrating geometry of the lattice
for a certain relation of the exchange (hopping) integrals. Although these
eigenstates differ in details for the two models because of the different
statistics, they share some characteristic features. The localized eigenstates
are highly degenerate and become ground states in high magnetic fields
(Heisenberg model) or at certain electron fillings (Hubbard model),
respectively. They may dominate the low-temperature thermodynamics and lead to
an extra low-temperature maximum in the specific heat. The ground-state
degeneracy can be calculated exactly by a mapping of the manifold of localized
ground states onto a classical hard-dimer problem, and explicit expressions for
thermodynamic quantities can be derived which are valid at low temperatures
near the saturation field for the Heisenberg model or around a certain value of

Magnetocaloric effect in pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd2Ti2O7
An adiabatic demagnetization process is studied in Gd2Ti2O7, a geometrically
frustrated antiferromagnet on a pyrochlore lattice. In contrast to conventional
paramagnetic salts, this compound can exhibit a temperature decrease by a
factor of ten in the temperature range below the Curie-Weiss constant. The most
efficient cooling is observed in the field interval between 120 and 60 kOe
corresponding to a crossover between saturated and spin-liquid phases. This
phenomenon indicates that a considerable part of the magnetic entropy survives
in the strongly correlated state. According to the theoretical model, this
entropy is associated with a macroscopic number of local modes remaining
gapless till the saturation field. Monte Carlo simulations on a classical spin
model demonstrate good agreement with the experiment. The cooling power of the
process is experimentally estimated with a view to possible technical
applications. The results for Gd2Ti2O7 are compared to those for Gd3Ga5O12, a
well-known material for low temperature magnetic refrigeration.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted versio
Fermi Surface Measurements on the Low Carrier Density Ferromagnet Ca1-xLaxB6 and SrB6
Recently it has been discovered that weak ferromagnetism of a dilute 3D
electron gas develops on the energy scale of the Fermi temperature in some of
the hexaborides; that is, the Curie temperature approximately equals the Fermi
temperature. We report the results of de Haas-van Alphen experiments on two
concentrations of La-doped CaB6 as well as Ca-deficient Ca1-dB6 and
Sr-deficient Sr1-dB6. The results show that a Fermi surface exists in each case
and that there are significant electron-electron interactions in the low

Octupolar ordering of classical kagome antiferromagnets in two and three dimensions
Classical Heisenberg antiferromagnets on two-dimensional kagome and
three-dimensional hyperkagome lattices are investigated by Monte Carlo
simulations. For both models the symmetry-breaking states at low temperatures
are described by non-zero octupole moments or third-rank spin tensor order
parameters. In the case of the two-dimensional kagome antiferromagnet, a sharp
crossover into a coplanar state takes place at T_k ~ 0.004J, which we attribute
to proliferation of fractional vortices. The three-dimensional model exhibits a
first-order transition at T_c ~ 0.002J into a phase with critical spin

Superconducing Alloys with Weak and Strong Scattering: Anderson's Theorem and a Superconductor-Insulator Transition
We have studied the effects of strong impurity scattering on disordered
superconductors beyond the low impurity concentration limit. By applying the
full CPA to a superconductiong A-B binary alloy, we calculated the fluctuations
of the local order parameters and charge densities,
for weak and strong on site disorder. We find that for narrow
band alloy s-wav e superconductors the conditions for Anderson's theorem are
satisfied in general only for the case of particle-hole symmetry. In this case
it is satisfied regardless whether we are in the weak or strong scattering
regimes. Interestingly, we find that strong scattering leads to band splitting
and in this regime for any band filling we have a critical concentration where
a superconductor-insulator quantum phase transition occurs at T=0.Comment: 28 pages, 13 figure
Fermions on half-quantum vortex
The spectrum of the fermion zero modes in the vicinity of the vortex with
fractional winding number is discussed. This is inspired by the observation of
the 1/2 vortex in high-temperature superconductors (Kirtley, et al, Phys. Rev.
Lett. 76 (1996) 1336). The fractional value of the winding number leads to the
fractional value of the invariant, which describes the topology of the energy
spectrum of fermions. This results in the phenomenon of the "half-crossing":
the spectrum approaches zero but does not cross it, being captured at the zero
energy level. The similarity with the phenomenon of the fermion condensation is
