On the computation of confluent hypergeometric functions for large imaginary part of parameters b and z
The final publication is available at http://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007%2F978-3-319-42432-3_30We present an efficient algorithm for the confluent hypergeometric functions when the imaginary part of b and z is large. The algorithm is based on the steepest descent method, applied to a suitable representation of the confluent hypergeometric functions as a highly oscillatory integral, which is then integrated by using various quadrature methods. The performance of the algorithm is compared with open-source and commercial software solutions with arbitrary precision, and for many cases the algorithm achieves high accuracy in both the real and imaginary parts. Our motivation comes from the need for accurate computation of the characteristic function of the Arcsine distribution or the Beta distribution; the latter being required in several financial applications, for example, modeling the loss given default in the context of portfolio credit risk.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Degenerate Squeezing in Waveguides: A Unified Theoretical Approach
We consider pulsed-pump spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) as well
as pulsed single- and dual-pump spontaneous four-wave mixing processes in
waveguides within a unified Hamiltonian theoretical framework. Working with
linear operator equations in -space, our approach allows inclusion of linear
losses, self- and cross-phase modulation, and dispersion to any order. We
describe state evolution in terms of second-order moments, for which we develop
explicit expressions. We use our approach to calculate the joint spectral
amplitude of degenerate squeezing using SPDC analytically in the perturbative
limit, benchmark our theory against well-known results in the limit of
negligible group velocity dispersion, and study the suitability of recently

Integral measurement of the 12C(n, p)12B reaction up to 10 GeV
The integral measurement of the 12C(n, p)12B reaction was performed at the neutron time-offlight facility n TOF at CERN. The total number of 12B nuclei produced per neutron pulse of the n TOF
beam was determined using the activation technique in combination with a time-of-flight technique. The
cross section is integrated over the n TOF neutron energy spectrum from reaction threshold at 13.6 MeV
to 10 GeV. Having been measured up to 1 GeV on basis of the 235U(n, f) reaction, the neutron energy
spectrum above 200 MeV has been re-evaluated due to the recent extension of the cross section reference
for this particular reaction, which is otherwise considered a standard up to 200 MeV. The results from the
dedicated GEANT4 simulations have been used to evaluate the neutron flux from 1 GeV up to 10 GeV. The
experimental results related to the 12C(n, p)12B reaction are compared with the evaluated cross sections
from major libraries and with the predictions of different GEANT4 models, which mostly underestimate
the 12B production. The electrical characterization and response to hydrogen of Schottky diodes with a resistive metal electrode—rectifying an oversight in Schottky diode investigation
International audienceSchottky barrier structures with a resistive metal electrode are examined using the 4-point probe method where the probes are connected to the metal electrode only. The observation of a significant decrease in resistance with increasing temperature (over a range of ~ 100K) in the diode resistance-temperature (R D-T) characteristic is considered due to charge carrier confinement to the metal electrode at low temperature (high resistance), with the semiconductor progressively opening up as a parallel current carrying channel (low resistance) with increasing temperature due to increasing thermionic emission across the barrier. A simple model is constructed, based on thermionic emission at quasi-zero bias, that generates good fits to the experimental data. The negative differential resistance (NDR) region in the R D -T characteristic is a general effect and is demonstrated across a broad temperature range for a variety of Schottky structures grown on Si-, GaAs- and InP- substrates. In addition the NDR effect is harnessed in micro-scaled Pd/n-InP devices for the detection of low levels of hydrogen in an ambient atmosphere of nitrogen
Hydrogen-induced reversible spin-reorientation transition and magnetic stripe domain phase in bilayer Co on Ru(0001)
Imaging the change in the magnetization vector in real time by spin-polarized
low-energy electron microscopy, we observed a hydrogen-induced, reversible
spin-reorientation transition in a cobalt bilayer on Ru(0001). Initially,
hydrogen sorption reduces the size of out-of-plane magnetic domains and leads
to the formation of a magnetic stripe domain pattern, which can be understood
as a consequence of reducing the out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy. Further
hydrogen sorption induces a transition to an in-plane easy-axis. Desorbing the
hydrogen by heating the film to 400 K recovers the original out-of-plane
magnetization. By means of ab-initio calculations we determine that the origin
of the transition is the local effect of the hybridization of the hydrogen
orbital and the orbitals of the Co atoms bonded to the absorbed hydrogen.Comment: 5 figure
Insights into the room temperature magnetism of ZnO/Co3O4 mixtures
The origin of room temperature (RT) ferromagneticlike behavior in ZnO-based
diluted magnetic semiconductors is still an unclear topic. The present work
concentrates on the appearance of RT magnetic moments in just mixed ZnO/Co3O4
mixtures without thermal treatment. In this study, it is shown that the
magnetism seems to be related to surface reduction of the Co3O4 nanoparticles,
in which, an antiferromagnetic Co3O4 nanoparticle (core) is surrounded by a
CoO-like shell. This singular superficial magnetism has also been found in
other mixtures with semiconductors such as TiO2 and insulators such as Al2O3
A process-specific approach in the study of normal aging deficits in cognitive control: What deteriorates with age?
Bearing in mind that cognitive control is a complex function that includes several processes, it is not clear exactly which ones deteriorate with age. In fact, controversial results have been found. For example, some studies indicate that age-related deficits are observed in proactive and not in reactive control, others show that it is reactive control that is impaired and not proactive control, and some studies find no deficits at all (e.g., Kopp, Lange, Howe, & Wessel, 2014; Xiang et al., 2016). One possible reason is that the contribution of different processes to the deterioration of cognitive control was investigated separately, i.e., without testing all processes within the same paradigm. Therefore, the main goal of the present experiment was to study the impact of normal aging on several processes related to cognitive control within the same task, which included both Simon and Spatial Stroop trials. The study focused on the following processes: generation of conflict measured by automatic response capture (i.e., stronger task-irrelevant information processing compared to task-relevant information processing); conflict detection; and control implementation (which can be reactive control, both within trials and across trials, and proactive control, as a task-set strategy). The results showed larger automatic response capture for older adults when facing a stimulus-response conflict (Simon) but not a stimulus-stimulus conflict (Spatial Stroop). Similarly, older adults also showed larger detection effects for both conflicts. However, regarding control implementation, they only showed difficulties in inhibiting the early automatic response capture (within-trial reactive control) but not reactive control across trials or proactive control. In conclusion, it seems that older adults are more affected by the presence of task-irrelevant information, especially when it comes to resolving stimulus-response conflict. However, they showed no impairments in their ability to implement cognitive control both across trials and as a task-set strategy
Structure and Expression of Bud Dormancy-Associated MADS-Box Genes (DAM) in European Plum
Bud dormancy in temperate perennials ensures the survival of growing meristems under the harsh environmental conditions of autumn and winter, and facilitates an optimal growth and development resumption in the spring. Although the molecular pathways controlling the dormancy process are still unclear, DORMANCY-ASSOCIATED MADS-BOX genes (DAM) have emerged as key regulators of the dormancy cycle in different species. In the present study, we have characterized the orthologs of DAM genes in European plum (Prunus domestica L.). Their expression patterns together with sequence similarities are consistent with a role of PdoDAMs in dormancy maintenance mechanisms in European plum. Furthermore, other genes related to dormancy, flowering, and stress response have been identified in order to obtain a molecular framework of these three different processes taking place within the dormant flower bud in this species. This research provides a set of candidate genes to be genetically modified in future research, in order to better understand dormancy regulation in perennial species
Variations in soil chemical and physical properties explain basin-wide Amazon forest soil carbon concentrations
We investigate the edaphic, mineralogical and climatic controls of soil organic carbon (SOC) concentration utilising data from 147 primary forest soils (0–30 cm depth) sampled in eight different countries across the Amazon Basin. Sampled across 14 different World Reference Base soil groups, our data suggest that stabilisation mechanism varies with pedogenetic level. Specifically, although SOC concentrations in Ferralsols and Acrisols were best explained by simple variations in clay content – this presumably being due to their relatively uniform kaolinitic mineralogy – this was not the case for less weathered soils such as Alisols, Cambisols and Plinthosols for which interactions between Al species, soil pH and litter quality are argued to be much more important. Although for more strongly weathered soils the majority of SOC is located within the aggregate fraction, for the less weathered soils most of the SOC is located within the silt and clay fractions. It thus seems that for highly weathered soils SOC storage is mostly influenced by surface area variations arising from clay content, with physical protection inside aggregates rendering an additional level of protection against decomposition. On the other hand, most of the SOC in less weathered soils is associated with the precipitation of aluminium–carbon complexes within the fine soil fraction, with this mechanism enhanced by the presence of high levels of aromatic, carboxyl-rich organic matter compounds. Also examined as part of this study were a relatively small number of arenic soils (viz. Arenosols and Podzols) for which there was a small but significant influence of clay and silt content variations on SOM storage, with fractionation studies showing that particulate organic matter may account for up to 0.60 of arenic soil SOC. In contrast to what were in all cases strong influences of soil and/or litter quality properties, after accounting for these effects neither wood productivity, above-ground biomass nor precipitation/temperature variations were found to exert any significant influence on SOC stocks. These results have important implications for our understanding of how Amazon forest soils are likely to respond to ongoing and future climate changes
