Non Parametric Confidence Intervals for Receiver Operating Characteristic Curves
We study methods for constructing confidence intervals, and confidence bands, for estimators of receiver operating characteristics. Particular emphasis is placed on the way in which smoothing should be implemented, when estimating either the characteristic itself or its variance. We show that substantial undersmoothing is necessary if coverage properties are not to be impaired. A theoretical analysis of the problem suggests an empirical, plug-in rule for bandwidth choice, optimising the coverage accuracy of interval estimators. The performance of this approach is explored. Our preferred technique is based on asymptotic approximation, rather than a more sophisticated approach using the bootstrap, since the latter requires a multiplicity of smoothing parameters all of which must be chosen in nonstandard ways. It is shown that the asymptotic method can give very good performance.Bandwidth selection, binary classification, kernel estimator, receiver operating characteristic curve.

The critical Ising lines of the d=2 Ashkin-Teller model
The universal critical point ratio is exploited to determine positions of
the critical Ising transition lines on the phase diagram of the Ashkin-Teller
(AT) model on the square lattice. A leading-order expansion of the ratio in
the presence of a non-vanishing thermal field is found from finite-size scaling
and the corresponding expression is fitted to the accurate perturbative
transfer-matrix data calculations for the square clusters with

Non-absorbing high-efficiency counter for itinerant microwave photons
Detecting an itinerant microwave photon with high efficiency is an
outstanding problem in microwave photonics and its applications. We present a
scheme to detect an itinerant microwave photon in a transmission line via the
nonlinearity provided by a transmon in a driven microwave resonator. With a
single transmon we achieve 84% distinguishability between zero and one
microwave photons and 90% distinguishability with two cascaded transmons by
performing continuous measurements on the output field of the resonator. We
also show how the measurement diminishes coherence in the photon number basis
thereby illustrating a fundamental principle of quantum measurement: the higher
the measurement efficiency, the faster is the decoherence
