Experimental support for a model of birdsong production
Journal ArticleIn this work we present an experimental validation of a recently proposed model for the production of birdsongs. We have previously observed that driving the model with simple functions of time, which represent tensions in vocal muscles, produces a wide variety of sounds resembling birdsongs. In this work we drive the model with functions whose time dependence comes from recordings of muscle activities and air sac pressure. We simultaneously recorded the birds' songs and compared them with the synthetic songs. The model produces recognizable songs. Beyond finding a qualitative agreement, we also test some predictions of the model concerning the relative levels of activity in the gating muscles at the beginning and end of a syllable

Storyline description of Southern Hemisphere midlatitude circulation and precipitation response to greenhouse gas forcing
As evidence of climate change strengthens, knowledge of its regional implications becomes an urgent need for decision making. Current understanding of regional precipitation changes is substantially limited by our understanding of the atmospheric circulation response to climate change, which to a high degree remains uncertain. This uncertainty is reflected in the wide spread in atmospheric circulation changes projected in multimodel ensembles, which cannot be directly interpreted in a probabilistic sense. The uncertainty can instead be represented by studying a discrete set of physically plausible storylines of atmospheric circulation changes. By mining CMIP5 model output, here we take this broader perspective and develop storylines for Southern Hemisphere (SH) midlatitude circulation changes, conditioned on the degree of global-mean warming, based on the climate responses of two remote drivers: the enhanced warming of the tropical upper troposphere and the strengthening of the stratospheric polar vortex. For the three continental domains in the SH, we analyse the precipitation changes under each storyline. To allow comparison with previous studies, we also link both circulation and precipitation changes with those of the Southern Annular Mode. Our results show that the response to tropical warming leads to a strengthening of the midlatitude westerly winds, whilst the response to a delayed breakdown (for DJF) or strengthening (for JJA) of the stratospheric vortex leads to a poleward shift of the westerly winds and the storm tracks. However, the circulation response is not zonally symmetric and the regional precipitation storylines for South America, South Africa, South Australia and New Zealand exhibit quite specific dependencies on the two remote drivers, which are not well represented by changes in the Southern Annular Mode
Nonlinear Interaction of Transversal Modes in a CO2 Laser
We show the possibility of achieving experimentally a Takens-Bogdanov
bifurcation for the nonlinear interaction of two transverse modes ()
in a laser. The system has a basic O(2) symmetry which is perturbed by
some symmetry-breaking effects that still preserve the symmetry. The
pattern dynamics near this codimension two bifurcation under such symmetries is
described. This dynamics changes drastically when the laser properties are

Plausible Drying and Wetting Scenarios for Summer in Southeastern South America
Summer rainfall trends in southeastern South America (SE-SA) have received attention in recent decades because of their importance for climate impacts. More than one driving mechanism has been identified for the trends, some of which have opposing effects. It is still not clear how much each mechanism has contributed to the observed trends or how their combined influence will affect future changes. Here, we address the second question and study how the CMIP6 summer SE-SA rainfall response to greenhouse warming can be explained by mechanisms related to large-scale extratropical circulation responses in the Southern Hemisphere to remote drivers (RDs) of regional climate change. We find that the regional uncertainty is well represented by combining the influence of four RDs: tropical upper-tropospheric amplification of surface warming, the delay in the stratospheric polar vortex breakdown date, and two RDs characterizing recognized tropical Pacific SST warming patterns. Applying a storyline framework, we identify the combination of RD responses that lead to the most extreme drying and wetting scenarios. Although most scenarios involve wetting, SE-SA drying can result if high upper-tropospheric tropical warming and early stratospheric polar vortex breakdown conditions are combined with low central and eastern Pacific warming. We also show how the definition of the SE-SA regional box can impact the results since the spatial patterns characterizing the dynamical influences are complex and the rainfall changes can be averaged out if these are not considered when aggregating. This article’s perspective and the associated methodology are applicable to other regions of the globe.
Significance Statement: Summer rainfall in southeastern South America (SE-SA) affects an area where around 200 million people live. The observed trends suggest long-term wetting, and most climate models predict a wetting response to greenhouse warming. However, in this work, we find that there is a physically plausible combination of large-scale circulation changes that can promote drying, which means SE-SA drying is a possibility that cannot be ignored. We also show that the definition of the SE-SA regional box can impact regional rainfall analysis since the spatial patterns characterizing the dynamical influences are complex and the changes can be averaged out if these are not considered when aggregating. This perspective and the associated methodology are applicable to other regions of the globe
Quantum statistical effects in nano-oscillator arrays
We have theoretically predicted the density of states(DOS), the low
temperature specific heat, and Brillouin scattering spectra of a large, free
standing array of coupled nano-oscillators. We have found significant gaps in
the DOS of 2D elastic systems, and predict the average DOS to be nearly
independent of frequency over a broad band f < 50GHz. At low temperatures, the
measurements probe the quantum statistics obeyed by rigid body modes of the
array and, thus, could be used to verify the quantization of the associated
energy levels. These states, in turn, involve center-of mass motion of large
numbers of atoms, N > 1.e14, and therefore such observations would extend the
domain in which quantum mechanics has been experimentally tested. We have found
the required measurement capability to carry out this investigation to be

Topological signature of deterministic chaos in short nonstationary signals from an optical parametric oscillator
Although deterministic chaos has been predicted to occur in the triply
resonant optical parametric oscillator (TROPO) fifteen years ago, experimental
evidence of chaotic behavior in this system has been lacking so far, in marked
contrast with most nonlinear systems, where chaos has been actively tracked and
found. This situation is probably linked to the high sensitivity of the TROPO
to perturbations, which adversely affects stationary operation at high power.
We report the experimental observation in this system of a burst of irregular
behavior of duration 80 microseconds. Although the system is highly
nonstationary over this time interval, a topological analysis allows us to
extract a clearcut signature of deterministic chaos from a time series segment
of only 9 base cycles (3 microseconds). This result suggests that
nonstationarity is not necessarily an obstacle to the characterization of
chaos
Experimental evidence of non-Amontons behaviour at a multicontact interface
We report on normal stress field measurements at the multicontact interface
between a rough elastomeric film and a smooth glass sphere under normal load,
using an original MEMS-based stress sensing device. These measurements are
compared to Finite Elements Method calculations with boundary conditions
obeying locally Amontons' rigid-plastic-like friction law with a uniform
friction coefficient. In dry contact conditions, significant deviations are
observed which decrease with increasing load. In lubricated conditions, the
measured profile recovers almost perfectly the predicted profile. These results
are interpreted as a consequence of the finite compliance of the multicontact
interface, a mechanism which is not taken into account in Amontons' law
Community interventions for anxiety and depression in adults and young people: a systematic review
Background: Growing evidence suggests that community-based interventions may be effective for anxiety and depression. This study aimed to describe studies of community interventions delivered to adults and/or young people, either in person or online, evaluated in randomised controlled trials and provide an indication as to their effectiveness, acceptability, quality of data and where possible, mechanisms of action. We included interventions delivered at and/or by museums, art galleries, libraries, gardens, music groups/choirs and sports clubs.
Method: We developed and followed a preregistered protocol: PROSPERO CRD42020204471. Randomised controlled trials in adults and young people were identified in an extensive search with no date/time, language, document type and publication status limitations. Studies were selected according to predetermined eligibility criteria and data independently extracted and then assessed using Risk of Bias 1. The studies were deemed too heterogeneous for meta-analysis and were therefore reported using a narrative synthesis.
Results: Our analysis included 31 studies, with 2898 participants. Community interventions most studied in randomised controlled trials were community music (12 studies, 1432 participants), community exercise (14 studies, 955 participants) and community gardens/gardening (6 studies, 335 participants). The majority of studies were from high-income countries – many were in specific populations (such as those with physical health problems) and were generally of low quality. Dropout rates across the included studies were low (1 participant on average per 100 participants). The inadequate description of interventions limited identification of potential mechanisms of action.
Discussion: The uncertainty of the evidence allows only a weak recommendation in support of community interventions for anxiety and depression. The results suggest community engagement is a promising area for wide-reaching interventions to be implemented and evaluated, but more high-quality trials are needed, especially in young people and under-represented communities
