Utjecaj uvjeta uzgoja i dodatka soli na sastav eteričnog ulja slatkog mažurana (Origanum majorana) iz Tunisa
O. majorana shoots were investigated for their essential oil (EO) composition. Two experiments were carried out; the first on hydroponic medium in a culture chamber and the second on inert sand in a greenhouse for 20 days. Plants were cultivated for 17 days in hydroponic medium supplemented with NaCl 100 mmol L1. The results showed that the O. majorana hydroponic medium offered higher essential oil yield than that from the greenhouse. The latter increased significantly in yield (by 50 %) under saline constraint while it did not change in the culture chamber. Under greenhouse conditions and in the absence of salt treatment, the major constituents were terpinene-4-ol and trans-sabinene hydrate. However, in the culture chamber, the major volatile components were cis-sabinene hydrate and terpinene-4-ol. In the presence of NaCl, new compounds appeared, such as eicosane, spathulenol, eugenol, and phenol. In addition, in the greenhouse, with or without salt, a very important change of trans-sabinene hydrate concentration in EO occurred, whereas in the culture chamber change appeared in cis-sabinene hydrate content.U radu je opisano ispitivanje sastava eteričnog ulja izdanaka biljke O. majorana.
Perspectives on utilization of edible coatings and nano-laminate coatings for extension of postharvest storage of fruits and vegetables
It is known that in developing countries, a large quantity of fruit and vegetable losses results at postharvest and processing stages due to poor or scarce storage technology and mishandling during harvest. The use of new and innovative technologies for reducing postharvest losses is a requirement that has not been fully covered. The use of edible coatings (mainly based on biopolymers) as a postharvest technique for agricultural commodities has offered biodegradable alternatives in order to solve problems (e.g., microbiological growth) during produce storage. However, biopolymer-based coatings can present some disadvantages such as: poor mechanical properties (e.g., lipids) or poor water vapor barrier properties (e.g., polysaccharides), thus requiring the development of new alternatives to solve these drawbacks. Recently, nanotechnology has emerged as a promising tool in the food processing industry, providing new insights about postharvest technologies on produce storage. Nanotechnological approaches can contribute through the design of functional packing materials with lower amounts of bioactive ingredients, better gas and mechanical properties and with reduced impact on the sensorial qualities of the fruits and vegetables. This work reviews some of the main factors involved in postharvest losses and new technologies for extension of postharvest storage of fruits and vegetables, focused on perspective uses of edible coatings and nano-laminate coatings.María L. Global overview of the management of acute cholecystitis during the COVID-19 pandemic (CHOLECOVID study)
Background: This study provides a global overview of the management of patients with acute cholecystitis during the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: CHOLECOVID is an international, multicentre, observational comparative study of patients admitted to hospital with acute cholecystitis during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data on management were collected for a 2-month study interval coincident with the WHO declaration of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and compared with an equivalent pre-pandemic time interval. Mediation analysis examined the influence of SARS-COV-2 infection on 30-day mortality. Results: This study collected data on 9783 patients with acute cholecystitis admitted to 247 hospitals across the world. The pandemic was associated with reduced availability of surgical workforce and operating facilities globally, a significant shift to worse severity of disease, and increased use of conservative management. There was a reduction (both absolute and proportionate) in the number of patients undergoing cholecystectomy from 3095 patients (56.2 per cent) pre-pandemic to 1998 patients (46.2 per cent) during the pandemic but there was no difference in 30-day all-cause mortality after cholecystectomy comparing the pre-pandemic interval with the pandemic (13 patients (0.4 per cent) pre-pandemic to 13 patients (0.6 per cent) pandemic; P = 0.355). In mediation analysis, an admission with acute cholecystitis during the pandemic was associated with a non-significant increased risk of death (OR 1.29, 95 per cent c.i. 0.93 to 1.79, P = 0.121). Conclusion: CHOLECOVID provides a unique overview of the treatment of patients with cholecystitis across the globe during the first months of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The study highlights the need for system resilience in retention of elective surgical activity. Cholecystectomy was associated with a low risk of mortality and deferral of treatment results in an increase in avoidable morbidity that represents the non-COVID cost of this pandemic
Antimutagenic compounds and their possible mechanisms of action
Mutagenicity refers to the induction of permanent changes in the DNA sequence of an organism, which may result in a heritable change in the characteristics of living systems. Antimutagenic agents are able to counteract the effects of mutagens. This group of agents includes both natural and synthetic compounds. Based on their mechanism of action among antimutagens, several classes of compounds may be distinguished. These are compounds with antioxidant activity; compounds that inhibit the activation of mutagens; blocking agents; as well as compounds characterized with several modes of action. It was reported previously that several antitumor compounds act through the antimutagenic mechanism. Hence, searching for antimutagenic compounds represents a rapidly expanding field of cancer research. It may be observed that, in recent years, many publications were focused on the screening of both natural and synthetic compounds for their beneficial muta/antimutagenicity profile. Thus, the present review attempts to give a brief outline on substances presenting antimutagenic potency and their possible mechanism of action. Additionally, in the present paper, a screening strategy for mutagenicity testing was presented and the characteristics of the most widely used antimutagenicity assays were described
Neurovascular unit dysfunction with blood-brain barrier hyperpermeability contributes to major depressive disorder: a review of clinical and experimental evidence
About one-third of people with major depressive disorder (MDD) fail at least two antidepressant drug trials at 1 year. Together with clinical and experimental evidence indicating that the pathophysiology of MDD is multifactorial, this observation underscores the importance of elucidating mechanisms beyond monoaminergic dysregulation that can contribute to the genesis and persistence of MDD. Oxidative stress and neuroinflammation are mechanistically linked to the presence of neurovascular dysfunction with blood-brain barrier (BBB) hyperpermeability in selected neurological disorders, such as stroke, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, and Alzheimer’s disease. In contrast to other major psychiatric disorders, MDD is frequently comorbid with such neurological disorders and constitutes an independent risk factor for morbidity and mortality in disorders characterized by vascular endothelial dysfunction (cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus). Oxidative stress and neuroinflammation are implicated in the neurobiology of MDD. More recent evidence links neurovascular dysfunction with BBB hyperpermeability to MDD without neurological comorbidity. We review this emerging literature and present a theoretical integration between these abnormalities to those involving oxidative stress and neuroinflammation in MDD. We discuss our hypothesis that alterations in endothelial nitric oxide levels and endothelial nitric oxide synthase uncoupling are central mechanistic links in this regard. Understanding the contribution of neurovascular dysfunction with BBB hyperpermeability to the pathophysiology of MDD may help to identify novel therapeutic and preventative approaches
A novel sandwich-type SERS immunosensor for selective and sensitive carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) detection
Monitoring the malignant tumors via cancer biomarkers is very significant process. Nonetheless, the practical clinical applications need selective and sensitive analytical methods/techniques. In this study, a novel sandwich type immunosensor based on surface-enhanced raman scattering (SERS) was presented including 4-mercaptobenzoic acid labeled MoS2 nanoflowers@Au nanoparticles (MoS2 NFs@Au NPs/ MBA) as CEASERS tag and Fe3O4@Au nanoparticles functionalized delaminated Ti3C2Tx MXene (Fe3O4 NPs@Au NPs/d-Ti3C2TX MXene) as SERS magnetic supporting substrate for carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) detection. Especially, the determination of single molecule by using SERS method enables early diagnosis of major diseases. In addition, this technique can be utilized for multiplex analyzes owing to narrow well-resolved peaks. The prepared CEASERS tag and SERS magnetic supporting substrate were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD) method, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). A linearity of 0.0001–100.0 ng mL−1 was observed with high sensitivity. Finally, sandwich type immunosensor demonstrated good selectivity and stability for target CEA recognition in plasma sample. © 2020 Elsevier B.V
specific antigen (PSA) detection and immunosensor validation
In this study, an ultra-sensitive electrochemical immunosensor for PSA detection was designed. Firstly, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs)/p-aminothiophenol (ATP) functionalized graphene oxide (GO) composite (AuNPs-ATPGO) was constructed and modified to glassy carbon electrode (AuNPs-ATPGO/GCE). AuNPs-ATPGO/GCE was utilized as immunosensor platform to increase the amount of PSA antibody1 (Ab(1)). After that, selfassembled delaminated MXene-gold nanoparticles (d-Ti3C2TX MXene@AuNPs) was used to label PSA seconder antibody2 (Ab(2)) as signal amplification. The prepared AuNPs-ATPGO, d-Ti3C2TX MXene@AuNPs and electrochemical immunosensor was charecterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV), scanning electron microscope (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD) method, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The linearity range and detection limit (LOD) were obtained as 0.01-1.0 pg mL(-1) and 3.0 fg mL(-1), respectively.C1 [Medetalibeyoglu, Hilal; Kotan, Gul] Kafkas Univ, Fac Sci & Letters, Dept Chem, Kars, Turkey.[Atar, Necip] Pamukkale Univ, Fac Engn, Dept Chem Engn, Denizli, Turkey.[Yola, Mehmet Lutfi] Iskenderun Tech Univ, Fac Engn & Nat Sci, Dept Biomed Engn, Antakya, Turkey
