    A pre-prototype segment of a droplet sheet generator for a liquid droplet radiator was designed, constructed and tested. The ability to achieve a uniform, non-diverging droplet sheet is limited by manufacturing tolerances on nozzle parallelism. For an array of 100, 100 micrometer diameters nozzles spaced 5 stream diameters apart, typical standard deviations in stream alignment were plus or minus 10 mrad. The drop to drop fractional speed variations of the drops in typical streams were similar and independent of position in the array. The absolute value of the speed dispersion depended on the amplitude of the disturbance applied to the stream. A second generation preliminary design of a 5200 stream segment of a droplet sheet generator was completed. The design is based on information developed during testing of the pre-prototype segment, along with the results of an acoustical analysis for the stagnation cavity pressure fluctuations used to break-up the streams into droplets

    Azobenzene-p-benzoyl derivatives of cl-cl-glucose and B-d-glucose, fructose, galactose, lactose, maltose, sucrose, trehalose, gentiobiose and cellobiose have been prepared. They have been analized for per cent of azoyl and their specific rotations in chloroform determined. The chromatographic separation of d-d-glucose and fructose azoates as described by Reich has been repeated using silicic acid as an adsorbent. Using a mixture of magnesol and dicalite as an adsorbent the following separations have also been made: lactose and galactose, sucrose and d-d-glucose, trehalose and B-d-glucose

    A Quarter-Century of Observations of Comet 10P/Tempel 2 at Lowell Observatory: Continued Spin-Down, Coma Morphology, Production Rates, and Numerical Modeling

    We report on photometry and imaging of Comet 10P/Tempel 2 obtained at Lowell Observatory from 1983 through 2011. We measured a nucleus rotation period of 8.950 +/- 0.002 hr from 2010 September to 2011 January. This rotation period is longer than the period we previously measured in 1999, which was itself longer than the period measured in 1988. A nearly linear jet was observed which varied little during a rotation cycle in both R and CN images acquired during the 1999 and 2010 apparitions. We measured the projected direction of this jet throughout the two apparitions and, under the assumption that the source region of the jet was near the comet's pole, determined a rotational pole direction of RA/Dec = 151deg/+59deg from CN measurements and RA/Dec = 173deg/+57deg from dust measurements (we estimate a circular uncertainty of 3deg for CN and 4deg for dust). Different combinations of effects likely bias both gas and dust solutions and we elected to average these solutions for a final pole of RA/Dec = 162 +/- 11deg/+58 +/- 1deg. Photoelectric photometry was acquired in 1983, 1988, 1999/2000, and 2010/2011. The activity exhibited a steep turn-on ~3 months prior to perihelion (the exact timing of which varies) and a relatively smooth decline after perihelion. The activity during the 1999 and 2010 apparitions was similar; limited data in 1983 and 1988 were systematically higher and the difference cannot be explained entirely by the smaller perihelion distance. We measured a "typical" composition, in agreement with previous investigators. Monte Carlo numerical modeling with our pole solution best replicated the observed coma morphology for a source region located near a comet latitude of +80deg and having a radius of ~10deg. Our model reproduced the seasonal changes in activity, suggesting that the majority of Tempel 2's activity originates from a small active region located near the pole.Comment: Accepted by AJ; 29 pages of text (preprint style), 8 tables, 7 figure

    The Highly Unusual Outgassing of Comet 103P/Hartley 2 from Narrowband Photometry and Imaging of the Coma

    We report on photometry and imaging of Comet 103P/Hartley 2 obtained at Lowell Observatory from 1991 through 2011. We acquired photoelectric photometry on two nights in 1991, four nights in 1997/98, and 13 nights in 2010/11. We observed a strong secular decrease in water and all other observed species production in 2010/11 from the 1991 and 1997/98 levels. We see evidence for a strong asymmetry with respect to perihelion in the production rates of our usual bandpasses, with peak production occurring ~10 days post-perihelion and production rates considerably higher post-perihelion. The composition was "typical", in agreement with the findings of other investigators. We obtained imaging on 39 nights from 2010 July until 2011 January. We find that, after accounting for their varying parentage and lifetimes, the C2 and C3 coma morphology resemble the CN morphology we reported previously. These species exhibited an hourglass shape in October and November, and the morphology changed with rotation and evolved over time. The OH and NH coma morphology showed hints of an hourglass shape near the nucleus, but was also enhanced in the anti-sunward hemisphere. This tailward brightness enhancement did not vary significantly with rotation and evolved with the viewing geometry. We conclude that all five gas species likely originate from the same source regions on the nucleus, but that OH and NH were derived from small grains of water and ammonia ice that survived long enough to be affected by radiation pressure and driven in the anti-sunward direction. We detected the faint, sunward facing dust jet reported by other authors, and did not detect a corresponding gas feature. This jet varied little during a night but exhibited some variations from night to night, suggesting it is located near the total angular momentum vector.Comment: Accepted by Icarus; 20 pages of text (preprint style), 5 tables, 7 figure

    Synthesis, Regulation and Degradation of Carotenoids Under Low Level UV-B Radiation in the Filamentous Cyanobacterium Chlorogloeopsis fritschii PCC 6912

    Carotenoids in cyanobacteria play an important role in protecting against and in repairing damage against low level UV-B radiation. Here we use transcriptomics and metabolomic HPLC pigment analysis to compare carotenoid pathway regulation in the filamentous cyanobacterium Chlorogloeopsis fritschii PCC 6912 exposed to white light and to white light supplemented with low level UV-B. Under UV-B changes in carotenoid transcription regulation were found associated with carotenogenesis (carotenoid synthesis), photoprotection and carotenoid cleavage. Transcriptional regulation was reflected in corresponding pigment signatures. All carotenogenesis pathway genes from geranylgeranyl-diphosphate to lycopene were upregulated. There were significant increases in expression of gene homologs (crtW, crtR, cruF, and cruG) associated with routes to ketolation to produce significant increases in echinenone and canthaxanthin concentrations. There were gene homologs for four β-carotene-ketolases (crtO and crtW) present but only one crtW was upregulated. Putative genes encoding enzymes (CruF, CrtR, and CruG) for the conversion of γ-carotene to myxol 2′-methylpentoside were upregulated. The hydroxylation pathway to nostaxanthin via zeaxanthin and caloxanthin (gene homologs for CrtR and CrtG) were not upregulated, reflected in the unchanged corresponding pigment concentrations in zeaxanthin, caloxanthin and nostaxanthin, Transcripts for the non-photochemical quenching related Orange-Carotenoid-Protein (OCP) and associated Fluoresence-Recovery-Protein (FRP) associated with photoprotection were upregulated, and one carotenoid binding Helical-Carotenoid-Protein (HCP) gene homolog was downregulated. Multiple copies of genes encoding putative apocarotenoid related carotenoid oxygenases responsible for carotenoid cleavage were identified, including an upregulated apo-β-carotenal-oxygenase gene homologous to a retinal producing enzyme. Our study provides holistic insight into the photoregulatory processes that modulate the synthesis, photoprotection and cleavage of carotenoids in cyanobacterial cells exposed to low level UV-B. This is important to understanding how regulation of metabolism responds to a changing environment and how metabolism can be modulated for biotechnological purposes

    The Evolving Activity of the Dynamically Young Comet C/2009 P1 (Garradd)

    We used the UltraViolet-Optical Telescope on board Swift to observe the dynamically young comet C/2009 P1 (Garradd) from a heliocentric distance of 3.5 AU pre-perihelion until 4.0 AU outbound. At 3.5 AU pre-perihelion, comet Garradd had one of the highest dust-to-gas ratios ever observed, matched only by comet Hale-Bopp. The evolving morphology of the dust in its coma suggests an outburst that ended around 2.2 AU pre-perihelion. Comparing slit-based measurements and observations acquired with larger fields of view indicated that between 3 AU and 2 AU pre-perihelion a significant extended source started producing water in the coma. We demonstrate that this source, which could be due to icy grains, disappeared quickly around perihelion. Water production by the nucleus may be attributed to a constantly active source of at least 75 km2^2, estimated to be more than 20 percent of the surface. Based on our measurements, the comet lost 4x10114x10^{11} kg of ice and dust during this apparition, corresponding to at most a few meters of its surface.Even though this was likely not Garradd's first passage through the inner solar system, the activity of the comet was complex and changed significantly during the time it was observed

    Short-term effects of national-level natural resource rents on life expectancy: a cross-country panel data analysis

    While a substantial amount of literature addresses the relationship between natural resources and economic growth, relatively little is known regarding the relationship between natural resource endowment and health at the population level. We construct a 5-year cross-country panel to assess the impact of natural resource rents on changes in life expectancy at birth as a proxy indicator for population health during the period 1970-2015. To estimate the causal effects of interest, we use global commodity prices as instrumental variables for natural resource rent incomes in two-stage-least squares regressions. Controlling for country and year fixed effects, we show that each standard deviation increase in resource rents results in life expectancy increase of 6.72% (CI: 2.01%, 11.44%). This corresponds to approximately one additional year of life expectancy gained over five years. We find a larger positive effect of rents on life expectancy in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) compared to other world regions. We do not find short-term effects of rents on economic growth, but show that increases in resource rents result in sizeable increases in government revenues in the short run, which likely translate into increased spending across government sectors. This suggests that natural resources can help governments finance health and other development-oriented programs needed to improve population health

    The Increasing Rotation Period of Comet 10P/Tempel 2

    We imaged comet 10P/Tempel 2 on 32 nights from 1999 April through 2000 March. R-band lightcurves were obtained on 11 of these nights from 1999 April through 1999 June, prior to both the onset of significant coma activity and perihelion. Phasing of the data yields a double-peaked lightcurve and indicates a nucleus rotational period of 8.941 +/- 0.002 hr with a peak-to-peak amplitude of ~0.75 mag. Our data are sufficient to rule out all other possible double-peaked solutions as well as the single- and triple- peaked solutions. This rotation period agrees with one of five possible solutions found in post-perihelion data from 1994 by Mueller and Ferrin (1996, Icarus, 123, 463-477), and unambiguously eliminates their remaining four solutions. We applied our same techniques to published lightcurves from 1988 which were obtained at an equivalent orbital position and viewing geometry as in 1999. We found a rotation period of 8.932 +/- 0.001 hr in 1988, consistent with the findings of previous authors and incompatible with our 1999 solution. This reveals that Tempel 2 spun-down by ~32 s between 1988 and 1999 (two intervening perihelion passages). If the spin-down is due to a systematic torque, then the rotation period prior to perihelion during the 2010 apparition is expected to be an additional 32 s longer than in 1999.Comment: Accepted by The Astronomical Journal; 22 pages of text, 3 tables, 6 figure

    Impact of mining projects on water and sanitation infrastructures and associated child health outcomes: a multi-country analysis of Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) in sub-Saharan Africa

    BACKGROUND: Access to improved water and sanitation infrastructures are key determinants of health. The sub-Saharan African region in particular is lagging behind the ambitious goal of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to ensure universal access to improved and reliable water and sanitation for all (Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6). Large mining projects can promote economic growth and hence investments in water and sanitation infrastructures, but at the same time lead to rapid population growth and environmental degradation. In turn, these changes can pose risks and opportunities for child health (SDG 3). In this study we aim to quantify the impacts of mining projects on access to water and sanitation infrastructure as well as diarrhea and malnutrition among children using data from 131 Demographic and Health Surveys from sub-Saharan Africa. RESULTS: From a sample of around 1.2 million households, data within the proximity of 52 mine-panels were selected for longitudinal analyses, resulting in 41,896 households and 32,112 children. Improvements in access to modern water and sanitation infrastructures after mine opening were much larger in households near mining sites than in comparison areas located further away (adjusted relative risk ratio (aRRR) water: 18.60, 95 % confidence interval (CI): 13.08-26.46 and aRRR sanitation: 2.56, 95 % CI: 1.32-4.99). However, these associations were weaker among poorer households. In areas close to the mining sites, stunting and underweight prevalence decreased more strongly upon mine opening (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) stunting: 0.62, 95 % CI: 0.43-0.90; aOR underweight: 0.55, 95 % CI: 0.36-0.84). No differential changes were seen for wasting and diarrhea. Large impact heterogeneity was observed both within and across countries. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that the opening of mines is associated with improvements in access to modern water and sanitation infrastructures (SDG 6) as well as in some health outcomes (SDG 3). However, the large impact heterogeneity suggests that the assessment and management of mining-related impacts on communities should have an increased equity-focus, in order to "leave no one behind" in the work towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Overall, the findings of this study underscore that the resource extraction sector has the potential to make positive and substantial contributions towards achieving the SDGs
