Multi-wavelength properties of IGR J05007-7047 (LXP 38.55) and identification as a Be X-ray binary pulsar in the LMC
We report on the results of a 40 d multi-wavelength monitoring of the
Be X-ray binary system IGR J05007-7047 (LXP 38.55). During that period the
system was monitored in the X-rays using the Swift telescope and in the optical
with multiple instruments. When the X-ray luminosity exceeded erg/s
we triggered an XMM-Newton ToO observation. Timing analysis of the photon
events collected during the XMM-Newton observation reveals coherent X-ray
pulsations with a period of 38.551(3) s (1 {\sigma}), making it the 17
known high-mass X-ray binary pulsar in the LMC. During the outburst, the X-ray
spectrum is fitted best with a model composed of an absorbed power law () plus a high-temperature black-body (kT 2 keV) component. By
analysing 12 yr of available OGLE optical data we derived a 30.776(5) d
optical period, confirming the previously reported X-ray period of the system
as its orbital period. During our X-ray monitoring the system showed limited
optical variability while its IR flux varied in phase with the X-ray
luminosity, which implies the presence of a disk-like component adding cooler
light to the spectral energy distribution of the system.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRA
RBF neural net based classifier for the AIRIX accelerator fault diagnosis
The AIRIX facility is a high current linear accelerator (2-3.5kA) used for
flash-radiography at the CEA of Moronvilliers France. The general background of
this study is the diagnosis and the predictive maintenance of AIRIX. We will
present a tool for fault diagnosis and monitoring based on pattern recognition
using artificial neural network. Parameters extracted from the signals recorded
on each shot are used to define a vector to be classified. The principal
component analysis permits us to select the most pertinent information and
reduce the redundancy. A three layer Radial Basis Function (RBF) neural network
is used to classify the states of the accelerator. We initialize the network by
applying an unsupervised fuzzy technique to the training base. This allows us
to determine the number of clusters and real classes, which define the number
of cells on the hidden and output layers of the network. The weights between
the hidden and the output layers, realising the non-convex union of the
clusters, are determined by a least square method. Membership and ambiguity
rejection enable the network to learn unknown failures, and to monitor
accelerator operations to predict future failures. We will present the first
results obtained on the injector.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures, LINAC'2000 conferenc
Average characteristic polynomials in the two-matrix model
The two-matrix model is defined on pairs of Hermitian matrices of
size by the probability measure where
and are given potential functions and \tau\in\er. We study averages
of products and ratios of characteristic polynomials in the two-matrix model,
where both matrices and may appear in a combined way in both
numerator and denominator. We obtain determinantal expressions for such
averages. The determinants are constructed from several building blocks: the
biorthogonal polynomials and associated to the two-matrix
model; certain transformed functions and \Q_n(v); and finally
Cauchy-type transforms of the four Eynard-Mehta kernels , ,
and . In this way we generalize known results for the
-matrix model. Our results also imply a new proof of the Eynard-Mehta
theorem for correlation functions in the two-matrix model, and they lead to a
generating function for averages of products of traces.Comment: 28 pages, references adde
Passengers information in public transport and privacy: Can anonymous tickets prevent tracking?
Abstract Modern public transportation companies often record large amounts of information. Privacy can be safeguarded by discarding nominal tickets, or introducing anonymization techniques. But is anonymity at all possible when everything is recorded? In this paper we discuss travel information management in the public transport scenario and we present a revealing case study (relative to the city of Cesena, Italy), showing that even anonymous 10-ride bus tickets may betray a user's privacy expectations. We also propose a number of recommendations for the design and management of public transport information systems, aimed at preserving the users’ privacy, while retaining the useful analysis features enabled by the e-ticketing technology
Possible coupling between climatically induced lake level change, volcanic eruptions and seismotectonic activation in the Rukwa-Rungwe-Nyasa rift, SW Tanzania
The Rukwa rift basin is presently a closed hydrogeological depression containing a shallow lake (max 20 me deep) with its surface at an altitude around 810 m above sea level. Lacustrine terraces and paleo-shorelines are known up to 980 m above sea level, an altitude at which it reach the overflow sill towards Lake Tanganyika. Both Lakes Tanganyika and Nyasa (Malawi) are presently overflowing, but as their lake level fluctuates, they have been disconnected from their outlet in the recent past. High resolution seismic profiling in both Lakes Rukwa and Malawi has show the presence of active fault systems underneath the lake floor. Some of these fault systems appear to have had a cyclic activity, with alternating periods of high tectonic activity/sedimentation and periods of tectonic quiescence. The accommodation zone between Lake Rukwa and Nyasa is occupied by the Rungwe volcanic Province, with the Ngozi, Rungwe and Kiejo volcanoes presenting signs of recent volcanic activity. The Rungwe Province is cross-cut by several directions of faults, which clearly control the location of the volcanic vents. In our work, we reviewed the available data on recent (Late Pleistocene – Holocene) volcanic eruptions, in the Rungwe area itself, in the drill cores from the surrounding lakes and from aerial observations up to 300 km away from the Rungwe Province. We performed morphotectonic and paleoseismic investigations of the Kanda fault, a major normal fault between lakes Rukwa and Tanganyika. We investigated lacustrine deposits of the Rukwa basin corresponding to the two last cycles of high lake level. The chronological framework was established using 30 new radiocarbon dating and the most prominent volcanic tephra layers were used as a reference in the correlations. The results are still preliminary, but a good correlation already appear between climatically induced lake level change (in Lake Rukwa), seismo-tectonic activation of the regional fault network (underneath Lake Rukwa and the Kanda fault between Lakes Rukwa and Tanganyika) and the timing of the recent strong volcanic eruptions in the Rungwe Volcanic Province since the last 40.000 years. This relation is explained taking into account that Lake Rukwa is very sensitive to climate change as it occupies a flat depression and its overflow outlet is 180 m above its present-day level. Its lake level rises rapidly when the climate becomes more humid as it was the case during the Last Glacial Maximum and during the Younger Dryas event. Increase in lake level means increasing of the load in the basin and perturbation of the ambient tectonic stresses. In most of the Rukwa rift, the tectonic stress is of extensional (normal faulting) regime, with the maximum principal stress axis (sigma 1) subvertical. In these conditions, increasing the vertical load will increase the shear stress on the existing normal faults, triggering (seismogenic) normal faulting deformation. As the architecture of the active volcanoes in the Rungwe Province is tectonically controlled, activation of the faults, together with a greater pressure of water in the tectonic discontinuities are likely to trigger large volcanic eruptions, strongly explosive
Intussusception of the Small Intestine Caused by a Primary Melanoma?
Although the gastrointestinal tract is a fairly frequent site of melanoma metastases, reports of small bowel intussusception caused by melanoma are very rare. We report the case of a 77-year-old man who was admitted to our hospital with epigastric pain, melena and anaemia. After clinical examination, laboratory evaluation and radiological work-up the diagnosis of a jejunal intussusception was made. Exploratory laparoscopy revealed a large tumour arising from the jejunum, approximately 20 cm distal to the angle of Treitz. Small bowel resection with an end-to-end anastomosis was performed. Histological examination showed an intestinal melanoma. There are different theories concerning the origin of malignant melanoma in the small bowel. Although the small and large intestines normally contain no melanocytes, these cells have occasionally been found in the alimentary and respiratory tracts and even in lymph nodes, which supports the theory of a primary origin of melanoma at these sites. Since this was a solitary intestinal lesion and there was no history of cutaneous melanoma, we conclude that this could be an example of a very rare primary melanoma of the small intestine
High birthweights among infants of north African immigrants in Belgium.
OBJECTIVES: This study examined birthweights of North African immigrants in Belgium.
METHODS: Analyses focused on Belgian single live birth certificates from 1981 to 1988.
RESULTS: Low-birthweight (< 2500 g) rates were 3.1% among 34,686 newborns of North African origin and 4.8% among 804,286 newborns of Belgian origin. The entire North African birthweight distribution was shifted toward higher birthweights than the Belgian distribution. Low frequencies of low birthweights among North Africans were still observed after marital status, occupation of the father, and parity had been taken into account.
CONCLUSIONS: Despite their low socioeconomic status, North African immigrants have high birthweights
Provenance reinterpretation of some early Egyptian copper alloy artefacts
This paper presents a new provenance evaluation of recently published Egyptian copper alloy artefacts dating to the Protodynastic and Old Kingdom periods. The excavation context of a Protodynastic chisel from Elkab is considered in detail to provide a nuanced interpretation of its dating. In turn, the broader implications of this dating for early Egyptian copper provenance determination are discussed. Furthermore, several Old Kingdom artefacts from Abusir and Giza are reviewed. These objects include some of the earliest attestations of likely metal imports within Egypt, although their exact provenance remains unclear. Using a wide range of reference data and technological arguments, alternative interpretations are suggested to obtain a more nuanced picture of copper alloy imports and their role in early Egyptian metal procurement.Material Culture Studie
A family of Nikishin systems with periodic recurrence coefficients
Suppose we have a Nikishin system of measures with the th generating
measure of the Nikishin system supported on an interval \Delta_k\subset\er
with for all . It is well known that
the corresponding staircase sequence of multiple orthogonal polynomials
satisfies a -term recurrence relation whose recurrence coefficients,
under appropriate assumptions on the generating measures, have periodic limits
of period . (The limit values depend only on the positions of the intervals
.) Taking these periodic limit values as the coefficients of a new
-term recurrence relation, we construct a canonical sequence of monic
polynomials , the so-called \emph{Chebyshev-Nikishin
polynomials}. We show that the polynomials themselves form a sequence
of multiple orthogonal polynomials with respect to some Nikishin system of
measures, with the th generating measure being absolutely continuous on
. In this way we generalize a result of the third author and Rocha
\cite{LopRoc} for the case . The proof uses the connection with block
Toeplitz matrices, and with a certain Riemann surface of genus zero. We also
obtain strong asymptotics and an exact Widom-type formula for the second kind
functions of the Nikishin system for .Comment: 30 pages, minor change
