Impact of optical tissue clearing on the Brillouin signal from biological tissue samples

    Get PDF
Brillouin spectroscopy is a well-established technology in condensed matter physics to characterize the mechanical properties of inert materials, and it has been extended very recently to the study of biological samples. Transparency is beneficial for samples to be properly analyzed by Brillouin spectroscopy. Here, we explored the efficacy of optical tissue clearing techniques to improve the acquisition of Brillouin spectra from biological tissues in order to analyze their biomechanical properties. We describe the first application of Brillouin scattering to optically cleared biological tissues with CUBIC protocol. We conclude that, within the range of error, tissue clearing does not modify the mechanical properties of the studied biological tissues.Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades, the Pro CNIC Foundation, Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence (SEV-2015-0505); ISCIII-FIS grants PI18/00462 co-financed by ERDF, European Union (FEDER) Funds from the European Commission, European Union, “A way of making Europe”; MINECO/FEDER (MAT2015-65356-C3-1-R); Comunidad de Madrid Vol. 10, No. 6 | 1 Jun 2019 | BIOMEDICAL OPTICS EXPRESS 2681 (PHAMA 2.0-CM S2013/MIT-2740); CIBER de Salud Mental (CIBERSAM) and COSTaction CA16124

The Key Role Transferring Knowledge of Nuclear España, The Spanish Nuclear Society Magazine

    Get PDF
The magazine of the Spanish Nuclear Society (SNE), “Nuclear España” is a scientific-technical publication with almost thirty years of uninterrupted edition and more than 300 numbers published. Their pages approach technical subjects related to the nuclear energy, as well as the activities developed by the SNE, especially in national and international meetings. The main part of the magazine is composed by articles written by known specialist of the energy industry. One of the top goals of the magazine is to help on transferring the knowledge from the generation that built the nuclear power plants in Spain and the new generation of professionals that have started its nuclear career in the last years. Each number is monographic, trying to cover as many aspects on an issue as it is possible, with collaborations from the companies, the research centers and universities that helps to have complementary points of view. On the other hand the articles help to deep in the issue´s topic, broadening the view of the readers about the nuclear field and helping to share knowledge across the industry. The news section of the Magazine picks up the actuality of the sector as a whole. The editorial section reflects the opinion of the SNE Governing Board and the Magazine Committee on the subjects of interest in this field. On the other hand, the monthly interview sets out the professional outstanding opinions. With a total of eleven numbers per year, three of them have a noticeable international character: the one dedicated to the operative experiences on the Spanish and European nuclear power plants, the monographic issue devoted tothe Annual Meeting of the SNE and the international issue, which covers the last activities of the Spanish industry in international projects. Both first are bilingual issues (Spanish-English), whereas the international edition is published completely in English. Besides its diffusion through all the members of the SNE, the Magazine is distributed, in the national scope, to companies and organisms related to the nuclear power, universities, research centers, representatives of the Central, Autonomic and Local Administrations, mass media and communication professionals. It is also sent to the utilities and research centers in Europe, United States, South America and Asia

A theoretical study of the low-lying excited states of thieno[3,4-b]pyrazine

    Get PDF
The low-lying electronic excited states of thieno[3,4-b]pyrazine have been studied using the multiconfigurational second-order perturbation CASPT2 theory with extended atomic natural orbital basis sets. The CASPT2 results allow for a full interpretation of the electronic absorption and emission spectra and provide valuable information for the rationalization of the experimental data. The nature, position, and intensity of the spectral bands have been analyzed in detail. A preliminary comparative study of the ground-state geometry of thieno[3,4-b]pyrazine has been performed at the coupled cluster single and doubles and density functional theory levels using a variety of correlation-consistent basis sets. Thieno[3,4-b]pyrazine exhibits a polyene-like structure in the ground state due to the bond localization in the pyrazine moiety. An aromatization of the pyrazine unit is predicted for the lowest-energy electronic excited [email protected] [email protected] [email protected]

An approach to the natural and engineered nanoparticles analysis in the environment by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

    Get PDF
Different approaches to the most relevant and recent studies and applications of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) applied to the analysis of natural and engineered nanoparticles in the environment are described. Usually several separation methods like polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE), field-flow fractionation (FFF) and size exclusion chromatography (SEC) are used prior to the mass spectrometric measurements. In many cases the use of these hyphenated techniques provides important methodologies to know the bioavailability, mobility and toxicity of elements in life and environmental sciences. Alternatively, the capabilities of the single particle detection by ICP-MS (SD-ICP-MS) for the selective identification, characterization and determination of engineered nanoparticles will be also discussed

Attributing trends in extremely hot days to changes in atmospheric dynamics

This paper presents a method for attributing regional trends in the frequency of extremely hot days (EHDs) to changes in the frequency of the atmospheric patterns that characterize such extraordinary events. The study is applied to mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands for the extended summers of the period 1958–2008, where significant and positive trends in maximum temperature (Tx) have been reported during the second half of the past century. This study was supported by the Spanish government and the Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER) through the projects SPEQTRES (CGL2011-29672-C02-02) and REPAIR (CGL2014-59677-R). ¿Perspectivas de género en los impuestos? la discriminación positiva en el IRPF

    Get PDF
