Municipal waste disposal sites in the territory of Croatia

In Croatia, the municipal waste is in most cases dumped at uncontrolled disposal sites. Two years ago, a bylaw was passed in order to regulate waste management practices and specify disposal methods for municipal and similar waste. It is specified that, by the end of 2001, all municipal waste disposal sites in Croatia must be either developed in accordance with regulations or closed down. Several cases in which this problem was solved are presented and relevant conclusions are made

Abstract: The aim of graduate study was based on geological and hydrogeological relations to determine the impact of waste disposal facility on groundwater. First, it's made a survey of existing documentation in the public firm "Čistoća", Šibenik, then the field is mapped in close area of waste disposal facility at scale of 1:5000. The survey of "water catchment area" was preformed on spring Ribnik in scale 1:25000, and water samples were taken for chemical analysis. Inescapable conclusion is that landfill leachate from the waste disposal facility do not have an impact on springs water in Morinj Bay (spring Ribnik). It has been established that landfill leachate from the waste disposal facility can not reach the spring in the Morinje Bay due to the deep flysch hydrogeologic barriers (compression tectonic relations) which is located between the waste disposal facility and springs as well as the strong influence of the sea as a hydraulic barrier

Waste management in the Osijek-Baranja County

This paper gives an example of a potential waste management centre construction in the Osijek-Baranja County. First, the existing situation regarding waste management was established (quantity and composition). Today, waste is disposed on 9 ‘official’ landfills and a series of ‘unofficial’ ones. Considering the unsustainable nature of the present condition, which is contrary to the applicable Croatian regulations, efforts have been made to develop a solution with the aim of building a single waste management centre. The projections regarding mobility, generation, collection and disposal of waste for a period of 30 years are provided
