On rationality of the intersection points of a line with a plane quartic
We study the rationality of the intersection points of certain lines and
smooth plane quartics C defined over F_q. For q \geq 127, we prove the
existence of a line such that the intersection points with C are all rational.
Using another approach, we further prove the existence of a tangent line with
the same property as soon as the characteristic of F_q is different from 2 and
q \geq 66^2+1. Finally, we study the probability of the existence of a rational
flex on C and exhibit a curious behavior when the characteristic of F_q is

Towards Retinoid Therapy for Alzheimer’s Disease
Alzheimer’s disease(AD) is associated with a variety of pathophysiological features, including amyloid plaques, inflammation, immunological changes, cell death and regeneration processes, altered neurotransmission, and age-related changes. Retinoic acid receptors (RARs) and retinoids are relevant to all of these. Here we review the pathology, pharmacology, and biochemistry of AD in relation to RARs and retinoids, and we suggest that retinoids are candidate drugs for treatment of AD
Progress on the hybrid gun project at UCLA
UCLA/INFN-LNF/Univ. Rome has been developing the hybrid gun which has an RF gun and a short linac for velocity bunching in one structure. After the cavity was manufactured at INFN-LNF in 2012, tests of the gun was carried out at UCLA. The field in the standing wave part was 20 % smaller than the simulation but the phase advance was fine. The cavity was commissioned successfully up to 13 MW. The beam test was performed at 11.5 MW and demonstrated the bunch compression
The Hard Life: A Pedagogical Experience in Industrial Design

Based on the book The Hard Life, from English designer Jasper Morrison, the briefing proposed the devel- opment of concepts for new products inspired by the selection of objects in the book, and respective written interpretations. It seeks to explore the dialogue between the original objects – their use, Morrison’s interpretation - and the reinterpretation made by the students considering the current material culture.
Accompanied and coordinated with Bisarro, contemporary studio dedicated to the artisan production of small series in Bisalhães black clay, UNESCO Immaterial Cultural Heritage, the project seeks to explore the boundaries and common ground between memory and contemporary times.

Plus ça change - evolutionary sequence divergence predicts protein subcellular localization signals
Background: Protein subcellular localization is a central problem in understanding cell biology and has been the focus of intense research. In order to predict localization from amino acid sequence a myriad of features have been tried: including amino acid composition, sequence similarity, the presence of certain motifs or domains, and many others. Surprisingly, sequence conservation of sorting motifs has not yet been employed, despite its extensive use for tasks such as the prediction of transcription factor binding sites.Results: Here, we flip the problem around, and present a proof of concept for the idea that the lack of sequence conservation can be a novel feature for localization prediction. We show that for yeast, mammal and plant datasets, evolutionary sequence divergence alone has significant power to identify sequences with N-terminal sorting sequences. Moreover sequence divergence is nearly as effective when computed on automatically defined ortholog sets as on hand curated ones. Unfortunately, sequence divergence did not necessarily increase classification performance when combined with some traditional sequence features such as amino acid composition. However a post-hoc analysis of the proteins in which sequence divergence changes the prediction yielded some proteins with atypical (i.e. not MPP-cleaved) matrix targeting signals as well as a few misannotations.Conclusion: We report the results of the first quantitative study of the effectiveness of evolutionary sequence divergence as a feature for protein subcellular localization prediction. We show that divergence is indeed useful for prediction, but it is not trivial to improve overall accuracy simply by adding this feature to classical sequence features. Nevertheless we argue that sequence divergence is a promising feature and show anecdotal examples in which it succeeds where other features fail. © 2014 Fukasawa et al.; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.Link_to_subscribed_fulltex
Characterization of the QUartz Photon Intensifying Detector (QUPID) for Noble Liquid Detectors
Dark Matter and Double Beta Decay experiments require extremely low
radioactivity within the detector materials. For this purpose, the University
of California, Los Angeles and Hamamatsu Photonics have developed the QUartz
Photon Intensifying Detector (QUPID), an ultra-low background photodetector
based on the Hybrid Avalanche Photo Diode (HAPD) and entirely made of
ultraclean synthetic fused silica. In this work we present the basic concept of
the QUPID and the testing measurements on QUPIDs from the first production
line. Screening of radioactivity at the Gator facility in the Laboratori
Nazionali del Gran Sasso has shown that the QUPIDs safely fulfill the low
radioactive contamination requirements for the next generation zero background
experiments set by Monte Carlo simulations. The quantum efficiency of the QUPID
at room temperature is > 30% at the xenon scintillation wavelength. At low
temperatures, the QUPID shows a leakage current less than 1 nA and a global
gain of 10^5. In these conditions, the photocathode and the anode show > 95%
linearity up to 1 uA for the cathode and 3 mA for the anode. The photocathode
and collection efficiency are uniform to 80% over the entire surface. In
parallel with single photon counting capabilities, the QUPIDs have a good
timing response: 1.8 +/- 0.1 ns rise time, 2.5 +/- 0.2 ns fall time, 4.20 +/-
0.05 ns pulse width, and 160 +/- 30 ps transit time spread. The QUPIDs have
also been tested in a liquid xenon environment, and scintillation light from
57Co and 210Po radioactive sources were observed.Comment: 15 pages, 22 figure
Impacts of the Fukushima nuclear power plants on marine radioactivity

However, information has been made public regarding the concentrations of radioactive isotopes of iodine and cesium in ocean water near the discharge point. These data allow us to draw some basic conclusions about the relative levels of radionuclides released which can be compared to prior ocean studies and be used to address dose consequences as discussed by Garnier-Laplace et al. in this journal.(1) The data show peak ocean discharges in early April, one month after the earthquake and a factor of 1000 decrease in the month following. Interestingly, the concentrations through the end of July remain higher than expected implying continued releases from the reactors or other contaminated sources, such as groundwater or coastal sediments. By July, levels of 137Cs are still more than 10 000 times higher than levels measured in 2010 in the coastal waters off Japan. Although some radionuclides are significantly elevated, dose calculations suggest minimal impact on marine biota or humans due to direct exposure in surrounding ocean waters, though considerations for biological uptake and consumption of seafood are discussed and further study is warranted.Funding
