Utility of vessel-sealing systems in thyroid surgery.
The LigaSure TM vessel-sealing system (VSS) represents a new approach to intraoperative ligation. This clinical study retrospectively examined the utility of the VSS in thyroid surgery. In this study, we analyzed 56 consecutive patients who underwent thyroid surgery. Characteristics such as operative duration, the volume of intraoperative hemorrhage, and postoperative course were analyzed and compared between thyroid surgery using the VSS or conventional handtie methods. The present results indicate no significant differences in operative duration, volume of intraoperative hemorrhage, postoperative course, or duration of postoperative drainage between surgeries using the VSS or conventional methods. However, the postoperative hospital stay was found to be significantly shorter (p<0.05) with the VSS. No serious postoperative complications were encountered, and no significant differences were observed in the frequency of postoperative complications between methods. The VSS may simplify procedures for thyroid surgery, and hemostasis is effective for both thyroid vessels and thyroid parenchyma. However, further evaluation is warranted to adequately determine the relative merits of the VSS compared to conventional handtie methods.</p
Atomic matter wave scanner
We report on the experimental realization of an atom optical device, that
allows scanning of an atomic beam. We used a time-modulated evanescent wave
field above a glass surface to diffract a continuous beam of metastable Neon
atoms at grazing incidence. The diffraction angles and efficiencies were
controlled by the frequency and form of modulation, respectively. With an
optimized shape, obtained from a numerical simulation, we were able to transfer
more than 50% of the atoms into the first order beam, which we were able to
move over a range of 8 mrad.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Effective SGLT2 Inhibitor for Patient with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and Depression
The case was a 55-year-old female patient with depression for 5 years and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) for 3 years. She has received anti-depressant and anti-hyperglycemic agents (OHAs). Approximately 1 year ago, her diabetic control became exacerbated without specific triggers. She was started to given Ipragliflozin L-Proline as Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) Inhibitor. After that, her glucose variability and depression had been improved. According to the previous reports, SGLT-2 inhibitors seem to have anti-depression efficacy for diabetes. The case has been followed up in detail, and this report is expected to be a useful reference for diabetes care
Hip Function Was Not Associated with the Incidence of Preoperative Deep Vein Thrombosis in Patients Undergoing Primary Total Hip Arthroplasty
The prevalence of preoperative deep vein thrombosis (DVT) has been reported to be relatively high in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty. We investigated the prevalence of DVT, the association between hip function and preoperative DVT, and the effect of a history of surgery in patients who underwent primary total hip arthroplasty. We retrospectively analyzed the cases of the patients who underwent primary total hip arthroplasty between April 2013 and February 2020 at our institution. We evaluated the prevalence of preoperative DVT based on the results of the patients’ ultrasound screening. We performed univariate and multivariate analyses to investigate the association between the incidence of DVT and patient factors including age, sex, hip function, medical histories, and American Society of Anesthesiologists Physical Status classification. We analyzed 451 patients (494 hips). The prevalence of DVT was 14.2% (64 patients). The multivariate analysis demonstrated that increased age was an independent significant risk factor for DVT. The prevalence of preoperative DVT was relatively high among patients who underwent primary total hip arthroplasty. Preoperative DVT tended to be more prevalent in older patients. Hip function was not associated with the incidence of DVT
Hyperon Single-Particle Potentials Calculated from SU6 Quark-Model Baryon-Baryon Interactions
Using the SU6 quark-model baryon-baryon interaction recently developed by the
Kyoto-Niigata group, we calculate NN, Lambda N and Sigma N G-matrices in
ordinary nuclear matter. This is the first attempt to discuss the Lambda and
Sigma single-particle potentials in nuclear medium, based on the realistic
quark-model potential. The Lambda potential has the depth of more than 40 MeV,
which is more attractive than the value expected from the experimental data of
Lambda-hypernuclei. The Sigma potential turns out to be repulsive, the origin
of which is traced back to the strong Pauli repulsion in the Sigma N (I=3/2)

Single-Particle Spin-Orbit Strengths of the Nucleon and Hyperons by SU6 Quark-Model
The quark-model hyperon-nucleon interaction suggests an important
antisymmetric spin-orbit component. It is generated from a color analogue of
the Fermi-Breit interaction dominating in the one-gluon exchange process
between quarks. We discuss the strength S_B of the single-particle spin-orbit
potential, following the Scheerbaum's prescription. Using the SU6 quark-model
baryon-baryon interaction which was recently developed by the Kyoto-Niigata
group, we calculate NN, Lambda N and Sigma N G-matrices in symmetric nuclear
matter and apply them to estimate the strength S_B. The ratio of S_B to the
nucleon strength S_N =~ -40 MeV*fm^5 is (S_Lambda)/(S_N) =~ 1/5 and
(S_Sigma)/(S_N) =~ 1/2 in the Born approximation. The G-matrix calculation of
the model FSS modifies S_Lambda to (S_Lambda)/(S_N) =~ 1/12. For S_N and
S_Sigma, the effect of the short-range correlation is comparatively weak
against meson-exchange potentials with a short-range repulsive core. The
significant reduction of the Lambda single-particle potential arises from the
combined effect of the antisymmetric LS force, the flavor-symmetry breaking
originating from the strange to up-down quark-mass difference, as well as the
effect of the short-range correlation. The density dependence of S_B is also

Polarization phenomena in hyperon-nucleon scattering
We investigate polarization observables in hyperon-nucleon scattering by
decomposing scattering amplitudes into spin-space tensors, where each component
describes scattering by corresponding spin-dependent interactions, so that
contributions of the interactions in the observables are individually
identified. In this way, for elastic scattering we find some linear
combinations of the observables sensitive to particular spin-dependent
interactions such as symmetric spin-orbit (LS) interactions and antisymmetric
LS ones. These will be useful to criticize theoretical predictions of the
interactions when the relevant observables are measured. We treat vector
analyzing powers, depolarizations, and coefficients of polarization transfers
and spin correlations, a part of which is numerically examined in scattering as an example. Total cross sections are studied for polarized
beams and targets as well as for unpolarized ones to investigate spin
dependence of imaginary parts of forward scattering amplitudes.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figure
