Two-dimensional turbulence models
Two-dimensional turbulence models are compared with experimental measurements made using an array of instrumented towers. The spatial correlation coefficient, the two-point spectrum or cross spectrum, and the coherence function are discussed. The prediction techniques in general agree reasonably well with the experimental results. Measurements of the integral length scale however, do not correlate well with the prediction model
What is moving in hybrid halide perovskite solar cells?
Organic-inorganic semiconductors, which adopt the perovskite crystal
structure, have perturbed the landscape of contemporary photovoltaics research.
In this Account, we discuss the internal motion of methylammonium lead iodide
(CHNHPbI) and formamidinium lead iodide ([CH(NH)]PbI),
covering: (i) molecular rotation-libration in the cuboctahedral cavity; (ii)
drift and diffusion of large electron and hole polarons; (iii) transport of
charged ionic defects. These processes give rise to a range of properties that
are unconventional for photovoltaic materials, including frequency-dependent
permittivity, low electron-hole recombination rates, and current-voltage
hysteresis. Multi-scale simulations - drawing from electronic structure, ab
initio molecular dynamic and Monte Carlo techniques - have been combined with
neutron scattering and ultra-fast vibrational spectroscopy to qualify the
nature and timescales of the motions. Recent experimental evidence and
theoretical models for simultaneous electron transport and ion transport in
these materials has been presented, suggesting they are mixed-mode conductors
with similarities to metal oxide perovskites developed for battery and fuel
cell applications. We expound on the implications of these effects for the
photovoltaic action. The temporal behaviour found in hybrid perovskites
introduces a sensitivity in materials characterisation to the time and length
scale of the measurement, as well as the history of each sample. It also poses
significant challenges for accurate materials and device simulations. Herein,

Sampling through time and phylodynamic inference with coalescent and birth-death models
Many population genetic models have been developed for the purpose of
inferring population size and growth rates from random samples of genetic data.
We examine two popular approaches to this problem, the coalescent and the
birth-death-sampling model, in the context of estimating population size and
birth rates in a population growing exponentially according to the birth-death
branching process. For sequences sampled at a single time, we found the
coalescent and the birth-death-sampling model gave virtually indistinguishable
results in terms of the growth rates and fraction of the population sampled,
even when sampling from a small population. For sequences sampled at multiple
time points, we find that the birth-death model estimators are subject to large
bias if the sampling process is misspecified. Since birth-death-sampling models
incorporate a model of the sampling process, we show how much of the
statistical power of birth-death-sampling models arises from the sequence of
sample times and not from the genealogical tree. This motivates the development
of a new coalescent estimator, which is augmented with a model of the known
sampling process and is potentially more precise than the coalescent that does
not use sample time information.Comment: Submitte
LGBT Equality and Sexual Racism
Bigots such as the trial judge in Loving have long invoked religion to justify discrimination. We agree with other scholars that neither religion nor artistic freedom justifies letting businesses discriminate. However, we also want to make manifest the tension between the public posture of LGBT-rights litigants and the practices of some LGBT people who discriminate based on race in selecting partners. We argue that some white people’s aversion to dating and forming relationships with people of color is a form of racism, and this sexual racism is inconsistent with the spirit of Loving. Part I provides a review of empirical literature on the prevalence of racial preferences in intimate relationships and shows that racial preferences are particularly pronounced among gay men. Part II supplements this overview with a qualitative exploration of how race informed the intimate experiences of people who sat for interviews as part of our ongoing study, LGBT Relationships and Well-Being. We also offer a theory that may partially explain sexual racism in the LGBT community. Specifically, exposure to mainstream gay culture may teach sexual minority men that race and desire are closely intertwined. In Part III, we propose ideas for further research, including a study that would test our theory
International Economic Agreements and the Constitution
International agreements, such as the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), generally aim to facilitate the free flow of goods and services among nations.1 The U.S. Supreme Court has developed a jurisprudence similarly aiming to facilitate the free flow of goods and services among the several states. That jurisprudence has developed from litigation challenging the constitutionality of state actions on the basis of the Commerce and Supremacy Clauses of the Constitution (art. I, § 8, cl. 3, and art. VI, cl. 2). In some subject areas, Commerce Clause decisions closely align with international agreements. In other areas, either or both fall short of achieving economic integration.
A field study of wind over a simulated block building
A full-scale field study of the wind over a simulated two-dimensional building is reported. The study develops an experiment to investigate the structure and magnitude of the wind fields. A description of the experimental arrangement, the type and expected accuracy of the data, and the range of the data are given. The data are expected to provide a fundamental understanding of mean wind and turbulence structure of the wind field around the bluff body. Preliminary analysis of the data demonstrates the reliability and completeness of the data in this regard
Wireworm Control using Fodder Rape and Mustard – evaluating the use of brassica green manures for the control of wireworm (Agriotes spp.) in organic crops
In a field experiment at ADAS Pwllpeiran in 2001, brassica green manures were grown for 6 weeks and dug in before planting King Edward potatoes, to see if they suppressed wireworm in the crop. There was a trend for potatoes grown after mustard to suffer less damage from both wireworms and slugs than potatoes grown after fodder rape or no green manure, but the differences were not significant. Further trials, with longer green manuring periods, are needed to establish if there is a benefit, and whether the breakdown products of brassica green manures are toxic to wireworms

Effectiveness of nurse home-visiting for disadvantaged families: results of a natural experiment
Extent: 9p.Objective: To evaluate the effects of a postnatal home-visiting programme delivered by community health nurses to socially disadvantaged mothers in South Australia. Design: The intervention group of 428 mothers lived in metropolitan Adelaide and the comparison group of 239 mothers lived in regional towns where the programme was not yet available. All participating mothers met health service eligibility criteria for enrolment in the home-visiting programme. Participants in both groups were assessed at baseline (mean child age=14.4 weeks SD=2.3), prior to programme enrolment, and again when the children were aged 9, 18 and 24 months. Setting: State-wide community child health service. Participants: 667 socially disadvantaged mothers enrolled consecutively. 487 mothers (73%) completed the 24-month assessment. Intervention: Two-year postnatal home-visiting programme based on the Family Partnership Model. Primary outcome measures: Parent Stress Index (PSI), Kessler Psychological Distress Scale and the Ages and Stages Questionnaire. Results: Mixed models adjusting for baseline differences were used to compare outcomes in the two groups. The mothers in the home-visiting group reported greater improvement on the PSI subscales assessing a mother's perceptions on the quality of their relationship with their child (1.10, 95% CI 0.06 to 2.14) and satisfaction with their role as parents (0.46, 95% CI −0.15 to 1.07) than mothers in the comparison group. With the exception of childhood sleeping problems, there were no other significant differences in the outcomes across the two groups. Conclusions: The findings suggest that home-visiting programmes delivered by community health nurses as part of routine clinical practice have the potential to improve maternal–child relationships and help mothers adjust to their role as parents.Michael Gifford Sawyer, Linda Frost, Kerrie Bowering, John Lync
