Orbital Freezing in FeCr2S4 Studied by Dielectric Spectroscopy
Broadband dielectric spectroscopy has been performed on single-crystalline
FeCr2S4 revealing a transition into a low-temperature orbital glass phase and
on polycrystalline FeCr2S4 where long-range orbital order is established via a
cooperative Jahn-Teller transition. The freezing of the orbital moments is
revealed by a clear relaxational behavior of the dielectric permittivity, which
allows a unique characterization of the orbital glass transition. The orbital
relaxation dynamics continuously slows down over six decades in time, before at
the lowest temperatures the glass transition becomes suppressed by quantum
tunneling.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
American College of Cardiology/ European Society of Cardiology international study of angiographic data compression phase III Measurement of image quality differences at varying levels of data compression
AbstractOBJECTIVESWe sought to investigate up to which level of Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) data compression the perceived image quality and the detection of diagnostic features remain equivalent to the quality and detectability found in uncompressed coronary angiograms.BACKGROUNDDigital coronary angiograms represent an enormous amount of data and therefore require costly computerized communication and archiving systems. Earlier studies on the viability of medical image compression were not fully conclusive.METHODSTwenty-one raters evaluated sets of 91 cine runs. Uncompressed and compressed versions of the images were presented side by side on one monitor, and image quality differences were assessed on a scale featuring six scores. In addition, the raters had to detect pre-defined clinical features. Compression ratios (CR) were 6:1, 10:1 and 16:1. Statistical evaluation was based on descriptive statistics and on the equivalence t-test.RESULTSAt the lowest CR (CR 6:1), there was already a small (15%) increase in assigning the aesthetic quality score indicating âquality difference is barely discernibleâthe images are equivalent.â At CR 10:1 and CR 16:1, close to 10% and 55%, respectively, of the compressed images were rated to be âclearly degraded, but still adequate for clinical useâ or worse. Concerning diagnostic features, at CR 10:1 and CR 16:1 the error rate was 9.6% and 13.1%, respectively, compared with 9% for the baseline error rate in uncompressed images.CONCLUSIONSCompression at CR 6:1 provides equivalence with the original cine runs. If CR 16:1 were used, one would have to tolerate a significant increase in the diagnostic error rate over the baseline error rate. At CR 10:1, intermediate results were obtained

Interdependence in Action: People with Visual Impairments and their Guides Co-constituting Common Spaces
Prior work on AI-enabled assistive technology (AT) for people with visual impairments (VI) has treated navigation largely as an independent activity. Consequently, much effort has focused on providing individual users with wayfinding details about the environment, including information on distances, proximity, obstacles, and landmarks. However, independence is also achieved by people with VI through interacting with others, such as in collaboration with sighted guides. Drawing on the concept of interdependence, this research presents a systematic analysis of sighted guiding partnerships. Using interaction analysis as our primary mode of data analysis, we conducted an empirical, qualitative study with 4 couples, each made up of person with a vision impairment and their sighted guide. Our results show how pairs used interactional resources such as turn-taking and body movements to both co-constitute a common space for navigation, and repair moments of rupture to this space. This work is used to present an exemplary case of interdependence and draws out implications for designing AI-enabled AT that shifts the emphasis away from independent navigation, and towards the carefully coordinated actions between people navigating togethe

Underground leaves of Philcoxia trap and digest nematodes
Fundação de Amparo Ă Pesquisa do Estado de SĂŁo Paulo (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientĂfico e TecnolĂłgico (CNPq)The recently described genus Philcoxia comprises three species restricted to well lit and low-nutrient soils in the Brazilian Cerrado. The morphological and habitat similarities of Philcoxia to those of some carnivorous plants, along with recent observations of nematodes over its subterranean leaves, prompted the suggestion that the genus is carnivorous. Here we report compelling evidence of carnivory in Philcoxia of the Plantaginaceae, a family in which no carnivorous members are otherwise known. We also document both a unique capturing strategy for carnivorous plants and a case of a plant that traps and digests nematodes with underground adhesive leaves. Our findings illustrate how much can still be discovered about the origin, distribution, and frequency of the carnivorous syndrome in angiosperms and, more generally, about the diversity of nutrient-acquisition mechanisms that have evolved in plants growing in severely nutrient-impoverished environments such as the Brazilian Cerrado, one of the world's 34 biodiversity hotspots.109411541158Fundação de Amparo Ă Pesquisa do Estado de SĂŁo Paulo (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientĂfico e TecnolĂłgico (CNPq)National Science Foundation [DEB-0126631, 0717711]Universidade Estadual de CampinasUniversidade de Sao PauloFundação de Amparo Ă Pesquisa do Estado de SĂŁo Paulo (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientĂfico e TecnolĂłgico (CNPq
Increasing metabolic stability via the deuterium kinetic isotope effect: an example from a proline-amide-urea aminothiazole series of phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase alpha inhibitors
In vitro metabolic identification studies with a PI3K-α inhbitor lead molecule 1 identified a single predominant site of oxidative metabolism to be occuring within a tert.butyl moiety. Modification of the tert.butyl group within the lead molecule 1, to the corresponing d9-tert.butyl analogue 2, led to an increase in both the in vitro and in vivo metabolic stability. This increase in metabolic stability resulted in a 2-fold increase in the oral bioavailability measured in the rat, and a 3-fold increase in potency in a chronic in vivo study in the mouse, for 2 when compared to 1
