Die unvollendete Sonnenuhr von der Agora der Italiker auf Delos
Only one case of an unfinished ancient sundial can be found in the scientific
literature. Found on the Greek island of Delos, it was first reported in 1938,
although the sundial was then later considered lost. In our campaign of
October 2012, we rediscovered the sundial. Using new and elaborate techniques,
we created a 3D model of the sundial, which has enabled us to answer questions
concerning its construction principles and the manufacturing processes used.
Our first evaluation has revealed that, initially, its creators had intended
to construct a cut conical sundial. Its discovery next to a workshop suggests
that the sundial was left there in its unfinished state on the destruction of
the islandâs main town

Combining magnetic forces for contactless manipulation of fluids in microelectrode-microfluidic systems
A novel method to drive and manipulate fluid in a contactless way in a microelectrode-microfluidic system is demonstrated by combining the Lorentz and magnetic field gradient forces. The method is based on the redox-reaction [Fe(CN)6]3â/[Fe(CN)6]4â performed in a magnetic field oriented perpendicular to the ionic current that crosses the gap between two arrays of oppositely polarized microelectrodes, generating a magnetohydrodynamic flow. Additionally, a movable magnetized CoFe micro-strip is placed at different positions beneath the gap. In this region, the magnetic flux density is changed locally and a strong magnetic field gradient is formed. The redox-reaction changes the magnetic susceptibility of the electrolyte near the electrodes, and the resulting magnetic field gradient exerts a force on the fluid, which leads to a deflection of the Lorentz force-driven main flow. Particle Image Velocity measurements and numerical simulations demonstrate that by combining the two magnetic forces, the flow is not only redirected, but also a local change of concentration of paramagnetic species is realized
American College of Cardiology/ European Society of Cardiology international study of angiographic data compression phase III Measurement of image quality differences at varying levels of data compression
AbstractOBJECTIVESWe sought to investigate up to which level of Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) data compression the perceived image quality and the detection of diagnostic features remain equivalent to the quality and detectability found in uncompressed coronary angiograms.BACKGROUNDDigital coronary angiograms represent an enormous amount of data and therefore require costly computerized communication and archiving systems. Earlier studies on the viability of medical image compression were not fully conclusive.METHODSTwenty-one raters evaluated sets of 91 cine runs. Uncompressed and compressed versions of the images were presented side by side on one monitor, and image quality differences were assessed on a scale featuring six scores. In addition, the raters had to detect pre-defined clinical features. Compression ratios (CR) were 6:1, 10:1 and 16:1. Statistical evaluation was based on descriptive statistics and on the equivalence t-test.RESULTSAt the lowest CR (CR 6:1), there was already a small (15%) increase in assigning the aesthetic quality score indicating âquality difference is barely discernibleâthe images are equivalent.â At CR 10:1 and CR 16:1, close to 10% and 55%, respectively, of the compressed images were rated to be âclearly degraded, but still adequate for clinical useâ or worse. Concerning diagnostic features, at CR 10:1 and CR 16:1 the error rate was 9.6% and 13.1%, respectively, compared with 9% for the baseline error rate in uncompressed images.CONCLUSIONSCompression at CR 6:1 provides equivalence with the original cine runs. If CR 16:1 were used, one would have to tolerate a significant increase in the diagnostic error rate over the baseline error rate. At CR 10:1, intermediate results were obtained

THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS Second-Order Effects of Unsteadiness on the Performance of Turbomachines
Abstract A 2D, linearized approach is used to investigate second-order effects of unsteadiness on the time-mean efficiency of turbomachinery. The objective is to quantify unsteady losses with a nonzero time-mean and to examine numerical simulations with respect to the modeling of unsteady flow fields and loss mechanisms. Results of simulations constitute the input to the analytical models employed. Two unsteady loss mechanisms, one of inviscid and the other of viscous nature, are considered. The unsteady circulation losses, i.e., the transfer of kinetic energy into the unsteady part of the flow field through vorticity shed at the trailing edge of a blade, was first considered b
Per-Field Irrigated Crop Classification in Arid Central Asia Using SPOT and ASTER Data
Abstract: The overarching goal of this research was to explore accurate methods of mapping irrigated crops, where digital cadastre information is unavailable: (a) Boundary separation by object-oriented image segmentation using very high spatial resolution (2.5ĂÂąĂĂ5 m) data was followed by (b) identification of crops and crop rotations by means of phenology, tasselled cap, and rule-based classification using high resolution (15ĂÂąĂĂ30 m) bi-temporal data. The extensive irrigated cotton production system of the Khorezm province in Uzbekistan, Central Asia, was selected as a study region. Image segmentation was carried out on pan-sharpened SPOT data. Varying combinations of segmentation parameters (shape, compactness, and color) were tested for optimized boundary separation. The resulting geometry was validated against polygons digitized from the data and cadastre maps, analysing similarity (size, shape) and congruence. The parameters shape and compactness were decisive for segmentation accuracy. Differences between crop phenologies were analyzed at field level using bi-temporal ASTER data. A rule set based on the tasselled cap indices greenness and brightness allowed for classifying crop rotations of cotton, winter-wheat and rice, resulting in an overall accuracy of 80 %. The proposed field-based crop classification method can be an important tool for use in water demand estimations, crop yield simulations, or economic models in agricultural systems similar to Khorezm
THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS AN ASYMPTOTIC ANALYSIS OF MIXING LOSS*
Abstract The objective of this paper is to establish, in a rigorous mathematical manner, a link between the dissipation of unsteadiness in a 2D compressible flow and the resulting mixing loss. A novel asymptotic approach and a control-volume argument are central to the analysis. It represents the first work clearly identifying the separate contributions to the mixing loss from simultaneous linear disturbances, i.e. from unsteady entropy, vorticity, and pressure waves. The results of the analysis have important implications for numerical simulations of turbomachinery flows; the mixing loss at the stator/rotor interface in steady simulations and numerical smoothing are discussed in depth. For a transonic turbine, the entropy rise through the stage is compared for a steady and an unsteady viscous simulation. The large interface mixing loss in the steady simulation is pointed out and its physical significance is discussed. The asymptotic approach is then applied to the first detailed analysis of interface mixing loss. Contributions from different wave types and wavelengths are quantified and discussed.
