Stiff Polymers, Foams and Fiber Networks
We study the elasticity of fibrous materials composed of generalized stiff
polymers. It is shown that in contrast to cellular foam-like structures affine
strain fields are generically unstable. Instead, a subtle interplay between the
architecture of the network and the elastic properties of its building blocks
leads to intriguing mechanical properties with intermediate asymptotic scaling
regimes. We present exhaustive numerical studies based on a finite element

Fundamental and harmonic emission in interplanetary type 2 radio bursts
Three interplanetary type II radio bursts which show two prominent and long duration bands in their dynamic spectra were analyzed in detail and compared to similar bands in meter wavelength type II events. These bands, which differ by a factor of about two in frequency, were interpreted in terms of fundamental and harmonic emission. The fundamental component has a greater average intensity than the harmonic, due largely to short intense brightenings. The fundamental spectral profile is more narrow than that of the harmonic, with harmonic band typically exhibiting a larger bandwidth to frequency ratio than the fundamental by a factor of two. The fundamental has a larger source size than the harmonic, 160 degrees versus 110 degrees, on average, as viewed from the Sun. Two of the events have source positions which correlate well with the associated flare positions
Into the central 10 pc of the most distant known radio quasar. VLBI imaging observations of J1429+5447 at z=6.21
Context: There are about 60 quasars known at redshifts z>5.7 to date. Only
three of them are detected in the radio above 1 mJy flux density at 1.4 GHz
frequency. Among them, J1429+5447 (z=6.21) is the highest-redshift radio quasar
known at present. These rare, distant, and powerful objects provide important
insight into the activity of the supermassive black holes in the Universe at
early cosmological epochs, and on the physical conditions in their environment.
Aims: We studied the compact radio structure of J1429+5447 on the
milli-arcsecond (mas) angular scale, in order to compare the structural and
spectral properties with those of other two z~6 radio-loud quasars, J0836+0054
(z=5.77) and J1427+3312 (z=6.12). Methods: We performed Very Long Baseline
Interferometry (VLBI) imaging observations of J1429+5447 with the European VLBI
Network (EVN) at 1.6 GHz on 2010 June 8, and at 5 GHz on 2010 May 27. Results:
Based on its observed radio properties, the compact but somewhat resolved
structure on linear scales of <100 pc, and the steep spectrum, the quasar
J1429+5447 is remarkably similar to J0836+0054 and J1427+3312. To answer the
question whether the compact steep-spectrum radio emission is a "universal"
feature of the most distant radio quasars, it is essential to study more, yet

Constraining the parameters of the putative supermassive binary black hole in PG 1302-102 from its radio structure
We investigate the pc-scale kinematics and kpc-scale radio morphology of the
quasar PG 1302-102, which may harbour a sub-pc separation supermassive binary
black hole system at its centre as inferred from optical variability.
High-resolution radio interferometric measurements obtained with the Very Long
Baseline Array (VLBA) in the Monitoring Of Jets in Active galactic nuclei with
VLBA Experiments (MOJAVE) programme at 15 GHz at 20 epochs spanning 17 years
were analysed to investigate the pc-scale radio structure. Archival
observations with the Very Large Array (VLA) at 1.4 GHz and 5 GHz were obtained
to study the kpc-scale morphology. We find that the pc-scale jet is inclined
within ~2.2 deg to the line of sight and has a half-opening angle of about 0.2
deg. The parameters derived from the pc-scale radio jet are qualitatively
consistent with those obtained from the analysis of the optical light curve of
PG 1302-102. We obtain at least 0.08 for the mass ratio of the two black holes
in the system. We find some indication for a helical jet structure on
kpc-scale, but the directions of the inner and the extended radio jets are
significantly different, obstructing a straightforward connection of the pc-

Une première comparaison des droits à pension des ménages français et américains.
The aim of this paper is to build and estimate a macroeconomic model of credit risk for the French manufacturing sector. This model is based on Wilson's CreditPortfolioView model (1997a, 1997b); it enables us to simulate loss distributions for a credit portfolio for several macroeconomic scenarios. We implement two simulation procedures based on two assumptions relative to probabilities of default (PDs): in the first procedure, firms are assumed to have identical default probabilities; in the second, individual risk is taken into account. The empirical results indicate that these simulation procedures lead to quite different loss distributions. For instance, a negative one standard deviation shock on output leads to a maximum loss of 3.07% of the financial debt of the French manufacturing sector, with a probability of 99%, under the identical default probability hypothesis versus 2.61% with individual default probabilities.Consumption and savings, pension funds, social security and public pensions, portfolio choices and investment decisions.
Linear response of a grafted semiflexible polymer to a uniform force field
We use the worm-like chain model to analytically calculate the linear
response of a grafted semiflexible polymer to a uniform force field. The result
is a function of the bending stiffness, the temperature, the total contour
length, and the orientation of the field with respect to that of the grafted
end. We also study the linear response of a worm-like chain with a periodic
alternating sequence of positive and negative charges. This can be considered
as a model for a polyampholyte with intrinsic bending siffness and negligible
intramolecular interactions. We show how the finite intrinsic persistence
length affects the linear response to the external field.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
Entropic forces generated by grafted semiflexible polymers
The entropic force exerted by the Brownian fluctuations of a grafted
semiflexible polymer upon a rigid smooth wall are calculated both analytically
and by Monte Carlo simulations. Such forces are thought to play an important
role for several cellular phenomena, in particular, the physics of
actin-polymerization-driven cell motility and movement of bacteria like
Listeria. In the stiff limit, where the persistence length of the polymer is
larger than its contour length, we find that the entropic force shows scaling
behavior. We identify the characteristic length scales and the explicit form of
the scaling functions. In certain asymptotic regimes we give simple analytical
expressions which describe the full results to a very high numerical accuracy.
Depending on the constraints imposed on the transverse fluctuations of the
filament there are characteristic differences in the functional form of the
entropic forces; in a two-dimensional geometry the entropic force exhibits a
