Considerations on coal gasification
Commercial processes for the gasification of coal with oxygen are discussed. The Koppers-Totzek process for the gasification of coal dust entrained in a stream of gasifying agents is described in particular detail. The outlook for future applications of coal gasification is presented
Experimental demonstration of continuous variable purification of squeezed states
We report on the first experimental demonstration of purification of
nonclassical continuous variable states. The protocol uses two copies of
phase-diffused states overlapped on a beam splitter and provides Gaussified,
less mixed states with the degree of squeezing improved. The protocol uses only
linear optical devices such as beam splitters and homodyne detection, thereby
proving these optical elements can be used for successful purification of this
type of state decoherence which occurs in optical transmission channels
Time-dependent gravity in southern California, May 1974 - Apr 1979
Gravity measurements were coordinated with the long baseline three dimensional geodetic measurements of the Astronomical Radio Interferometric Earth Surveying project which used radio interferometry with extra-galactic radio sources. Gravity data from 28 of the stations had a single reading standard deviation of 11 microgal which gives a relative single determination between stations a standard deviation of 16 microgal. The largest gravity variation observed, 80 microgal, correlated with nearby waterwell variations and with smoothed rainfall. Smoothed rainfall data appeared to be a good indicator of the qualitative response of gravity to changing groundwater levels at other suprasediment stations, but frequent measurement of gravity at a station was essential until the quantitative calibration of the station's response to groundwater variations was accomplished
Reading between the lines: attitudinal expressions in text
This is a brief overview of the starting points a project currently proposed and under evaluation by funding agencies. We discuss some of the linguistic methodology we plan to employ to idenitify and analyze attitudinal expressions in text, and touch briefly on how to evaluate our future results

Semilinear wave equations on accelerated expanding FLRW spacetimes
We identify a large class of systems of semilinear wave equations, on fixed accelerated expanding FLRW spacetimes, with nearly flat spatial slices, for which we prove small data future global well-posedness. The family of systems we consider is large in the sense that, among other examples, it includes general wave maps, as well as natural generalizations of some of Fritz John’s “blowup” equations (whose future blowup disappears, in our setting, as a consequence of the spacetime expansion). We also establish decay upper bounds, which are sharp within the family of systems under analysis.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
Airglow Derived Measurements of Q-Branch Transition Probabilities for Several Hydroxyl Meinel Bands
Spectroscopic measurements of the hydroxyl (OH) airglow emissions are often used to infer neutral temperatures near the mesopause. Correct Einstein coefficients for the various transitions in the OH airglow are needed to calculate accurate temperatures. However, studies showed experimentally and theoretically that the most commonly used Einstein spontaneous emission transition probabilities for the Q-branch of the OH Meinel (6,2) transition are overestimated. Extending their work to several Delta v = 2 and 3 transitions from v' = 3 to 9, we have determined Einstein coefficients for the first four Q-branch rotational lines. These have been derived from high resolution, high signal to noise spectroscopic observations of the OH airglow in the night sky from the Nordic Optical Telescope. The Q-branch Einstein coefficients calculated from these spectra show that values currently tabulated in the HITRAN database overestimate many of the Q-branch transition probabilities. The implications for atmospheric temperatures derived from OH Q-branch measurements are discussed
A conservation assessment of the amphibians and reptiles of the Forêt d’Ambre Special Reserve, north Madagascar
We surveyed the lowland rainforest of the Forêt d’Ambre Special
Reserve in north Madagascar for amphibians and reptiles. We
recorded a total of 20 amphibian and 39 reptile species via
opportunistic searching and pitfall trapping in the first published
survey to focus on this area. Consequently most of the species
found were new records for the area. Approximately half of the
species (51 %) were only found in relatively undisturbed areas
of forest and 61 % appear to be restricted to lowland rainforest
below 900 m elevation. The most vulnerable elements of this
herpetofauna are the three species that appear to be locally
endemic to Forêt d’Ambre (according to the current knowledge):
Boophis baetkei, Brookesia sp. nov., and Rhombophryne sp.
nov. An additional 25 species are considered regional endemics,
14 species are threatened according to the 2007 Red List
of Threatened Species and 15 species are listed on the CITES
appendices. This paper contributes to the current understanding
of Malagasy patterns of biodiversity by documenting the composition, geographical and ecological distribution of the herpetofauna found at this site. Despite its protected status, currently the Reserve is not being managed sufficiently as it is subject to numerous human - induced environmental problems resulting in habitat destruction and should therefore be considered a high conservation management priority. Herein, we provide conservation and development recommendations for this highly diverse site of herpetological importance. Furthermore, we provide an updated and revised species list of the amphibians and reptiles of Montagne d’Ambre National Park and a species list for the private Fontenay Nature Park
