Chinese Metaphysics as a Fruitful Subject of Study

    Get PDF
The study of Chinese philosophy in the English-speaking world has largely focused on ethical and political theories. In comparison, Chinese metaphysics—here understood primarily as theories regarding the nature, components, and operating principles of reality—has been far less researched and recognized. In this essay, we examine various meanings of “metaphysics” as it has been used in denoting a branch of philosophy and make the case that metaphysics is an important part of Chinese philosophy. We argue for the need to study Chinese metaphysics as a serious field of scholarship. We also present some most recent studies of Chinese metaphysics by leading scholars of Chinese philosophy who publish in the English-speaking world. This essay aims to show that not only that Chinese metaphysics is an appropriate and legitimate subject of scholarly research but it can also be a fruitful subfield of in the study in Chinese philosophy

Is the incidence of depressive disorders increased following cerebral concussion?

Q: Is the incidence of depressive disorders increased following cerebral concussion? Evidence-based answer: yes, in some populations. Youth and adolescents with self-reported history of concussion had increased risk of depressive disorders (strength of recommendation [SOR]: B, based on a prospective cohort study and a retrospective cohort study). Evidence was inconsistent for college athletes. Athletes with ≥ 3 concussions exhibited more depressive disorders, but no association was observed for those with 1 or 2 concussions compared to nonconcussion injuries (SOR: B, based on a cross-sectional study, a small prospective cohort study, and a case-control study). In semiprofessional and professional athletes, evidence was variable and may be sport related. Retired rugby players with a history of concussion showed no increase in depression compared to controls with no concussion history (SOR: B, based on a case-control study). Retired football players with previous concussions displayed increased incidence of depression, especially after ≥ 3 concussions (SOR: B, based on a prospective cohort study and a small case-control study). There is a significant risk of bias in these studies because of their reliance on self-reported concussions, differing definitions of depression, and possible unmeasured confounders in the study designs, making a causative relationship between concussion and depression unclear.Jason W. Case Report Treatment of Refractory Postural Tachycardia Syndrome with Subcutaneous Octreotide Delivered Using an Insulin Pump

    Get PDF
Postural Tachycardia Syndrome (PoTS) represents a disorder of the autonomic nervous system that results in symptoms of orthostatic intolerance. Despite having a severe impact on the patient's quality of life, the current treatment options for PoTS are based on limited evidence. Subsequently, this results in clinicians having to utilise a variety of treatment regimens in the hope of successfully providing symptomatic relief. However, the options available for PoTS are not without significant side effects that can worsen an already debilitating condition. Our cases provide a further novel treatment option for clinicians to consider in PoTS refractory to established treatments

Synthesis, in vitro evaluation, and radiolabeling of fluorinated puromycin analogues: potential candidates for PET imaging of protein synthesis

    Get PDF
There is currently no ideal radiotracer for imaging protein synthesis rate (PSR) by positron emission tomography (PET). Existing fluorine-18 labelled amino acid-based radiotracers predominantly visualize amino acid transporter processes, and in many cases they are not incorporated into nascent proteins at all. Others are radiolabelled with the short half-life positron emitter carbon-11 which is rather impractical for many PET centers. Based on the puromycin (6) structural manifold, a series of 10 novel derivatives of 6 was prepared via Williamson ether synthesis from a common intermediate. A bioluminescence assay was employed to study their inhibitory action on protein synthesis which identified fluoroethyl analogue (7b) as a lead compound. The fluorine-18 analogue was prepared via nucleophilic substitution of the corresponding tosylate precursor in modest radiochemical yield 2±0.6% and excellent radiochemical purity (>99%) and showed complete stability over 3 h at ambient temperature

The Isgur-Wise function in a relativistic model for qQˉq\bar Q system

We use the Dirac equation with a ``(asymptotically free) Coulomb + (Lorentz scalar) linear '' potential to estimate the light quark wavefunction for qQˉ q\bar Q mesons in the limit mQm_Q\to \infty. We use these wavefunctions to calculate the Isgur-Wise function ξ(v.v)\xi (v.v^\prime ) for orbital and radial ground states in the phenomenologically interesting range 1v.v41\leq v.v^ \prime \leq 4. We find a simple expression for the zero-recoil slope, ξ(1)=1/2ϵ2/3\xi^ \prime (1) =-1/2- \epsilon^2 /3, where ϵ\epsilon is the energy eigenvalue of the light quark, which can be identified with the Λˉ\bar\Lambda parameter of the Heavy Quark Effective Theory. This result implies an upper bound of 1/2-1/2 for the slope ξ(1)\xi^\prime (1). Also, because for a very light quark q(q=u,d)q (q=u, d) the size \sqrt {} of the meson is determined mainly by the ``confining'' term in the potential (γσr)(\gamma_\circ \sigma r), the shape of ξu,d(v.v)\xi_{u,d}(v.v^\prime ) is seen to be mostly sensitive to the dimensionless ratio Λˉu,d2/σ\bar \Lambda_{u,d}^2/\sigma. We present results for the ranges of parameters 150MeV<Λˉu,d<600MeV150 MeV <\bar \Lambda_{u,d} <600 MeV (ΛˉsΛˉu,d+100MeV)(\bar\Lambda_s \approx \bar\Lambda_{u,d}+100 MeV), 0.14GeV2σ0.25GeV20.14 {GeV}^2 \leq \sigma \leq 0.25 {GeV}^2 and light quark masses mu,md0,ms=175MeVm_u, m_d \approx 0, m_s=175 MeV and compare to existing experimental data and other theoretical estimates. A common feature of research investigating the placebo effect is deception of research participants about the nature of the research. Miller and colleagues examine the ethical issues surrounding such deception

Litter, gender and brand: The anticipation of incivilities and perceptions of crime prevalence

    Get PDF
This paper isolates litter as a physical incivility in a film-based experiment, demonstrating the impact of litter on participants' anticipation of a wide range of both physical and social incivilities, and on their perceptions of crime prevalence. Such relationships have not previously been examined, partly because litter has rarely been the focus of earlier studies on incivilities. This paper also tests for possible interaction effects in these relationships involving gender (finding no significant interaction), as well as examining whether there is a difference in the anticipation of incivilities and perceptions of crime prevalence between participants exposed to branded as opposed to unbranded litter (finding no difference between the two groups). Litter is often viewed as a tolerable nuisance and not always treated as a priority. This study suggests prioritising funds towards more targeted interventions to reduce litter might result in some ‘quick wins’ – most notably, reducing perceptions of crime prevalenc

Plasma Wakefield Acceleration with a Modulated Proton Bunch

    Get PDF
The plasma wakefield amplitudes which could be achieved via the modulation of a long proton bunch are investigated. We find that in the limit of long bunches compared to the plasma wavelength, the strength of the accelerating fields is directly proportional to the number of particles in the drive bunch and inversely proportional to the square of the transverse bunch size. The scaling laws were tested and verified in detailed simulations using parameters of existing proton accelerators, and large electric fields were achieved, reaching 1 GV/m for LHC bunches. Energy gains for test electrons beyond 6 TeV were found in this case.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure

All-optical switching and strong coupling using tunable whispering-gallery-mode microresonators

We review our recent work on tunable, ultrahigh quality factor whispering-gallery-mode bottle microresonators and highlight their applications in nonlinear optics and in quantum optics experiments. Our resonators combine ultra-high quality factors of up to Q = 3.6 \times 10^8, a small mode volume, and near-lossless fiber coupling, with a simple and customizable mode structure enabling full tunability. We study, theoretically and experimentally, nonlinear all-optical switching via the Kerr effect when the resonator is operated in an add-drop configuration. This allows us to optically route a single-wavelength cw optical signal between two fiber ports with high efficiency. Finally, we report on progress towards strong coupling of single rubidium atoms to an ultra-high Q mode of an actively stabilized bottle microresonator.Comment: 20 pages, 24 figures.
