On the Interactions between Capital Structure and Product Markets.A Survey of the Literature
This paper surveys capital structure theories based on product characteristics and the structure of input and output markets. In this manner, it extends the work of Harris and Raviv (1991). Simultaneously, we relate capital structure to decisions in the input and output markets, such as production and pricing, investments, and entry and exit. We briefly discuss each of the central papers in these literatures and relate them to the other models. Next, we present the known empirical evidence that either supports or rejects these models. Finally, we offer our conclusions and elaborate on this review article’s implications for future research.
Jensen-Feynman approach to the statistics of interacting electrons
Faussurier et al. [Phys. Rev. E 65, 016403 (2001)] proposed to use a
variational principle relying on Jensen-Feynman (or Gibbs-Bogoliubov)
inequality in order to optimize the accounting for two-particle interactions in
the calculation of canonical partition functions. It consists in a
decomposition into a reference electron system and a first-order correction.
The procedure appears to be very efficient in order to evaluate the free energy
and the orbital populations. In this work, we present numerical applications of
the method and propose to extend it using a reference energy which includes the
interaction between two electrons inside a given orbital. This is possible
thanks to our efficient recursion relation for the calculation of partition
functions. We also show that a linear reference energy, however, is usually
sufficient to achieve a good precision and that the most promising way to
improve the approach of Faussurier et al. is to apply Jensen's inequality to a
more convenient convex function.Comment: submitted to Physical Review
Atomic data from the Iron Project.XLIII. Transition probabilities for Fe V
An extensive set of dipole-allowed, intercombination, and forbidden
transition probabilities for Fe V is presented. The Breit-Pauli R-matrix (BPRM)
method is used to calculate 1.46 x 10^6 oscillator strengths for the allowed
and intercombination E1 transitions among 3,865 fine-structure levels dominated
by configuration complexes with n <= 10 and l <= 9. These data are complemented
by an atomic structure configuration interaction (CI) calculation using the
SUPERSTRUCTURE program for 362 relativistic quadrupole (E2) and magnetic dipole
(M1) transitions among 65 low-lying levels dominated by the 3d^4 and 3d^ 4s
configurations. Procedures have been developed for the identification of the
large number of fine-structure levels and transitions obtained through the BPRM
calculations. The target ion Fe VI is represented by an eigenfunction expansion
of 19 fine-structure levels of 3d^3 and a set of correlation configurations. Fe
V bound levels are obtained with angular and spin symmetries SL\pi and J\pi of
the (e + Fe VI) system such that 2S+1 = 5,3,1, L <= 10, J <= 8 of even and odd
parities. The completeness of the calculated dataset is verified in terms of
all possible bound levels belonging to relevant LS terms and transitions in
correspondence with the LS terms. The fine-structure averaged relativistic
values are compared with previous Opacity Project LS coupling data and other
works. The 362 forbidden transition probabilities considerably extend the
available data for the E2 and M1 transtions, and are in good agreement with
those computed by Garstang for the 3d^4 transitions.Comment: 19 pages, 1 figure. This paper marks the beginning of a large-scale

What about the men? Perinatal experiences of men of color whose partners were at risk for preterm birth, a qualitative study.
BACKGROUND:Preterm birth in the United States is associated with maternal clinical factors such as diabetes, hypertension and social factors including race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. In California, 8.7% of all live births are preterm, with African American and Black families experiencing the greatest burden. The impact of paternal factors on birth outcomes has been studied, but little is known about the experience of men of color (MOC). The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of MOC who are partners to women at medical and social risk for preterm birth. METHODS:This study used a qualitative research design and focus group methods. The research was embedded within an existing study exploring experiences of women of color at risk for preterm birth conducted by the California Preterm Birth Initiative. RESULTS:Twelve MOC participated in the study and among them had 9 preterm children. Four themes emerged from thematic analysis of men's experiences: (1) "Being the Rock": Providing comfort and security; (2) "It's a blessing all the way around": Keeping faith during uncertainty; (3) "Tell me EVERYTHING": Unmet needs during pregnancy and delivery; (4) "Like a guinea pig": Frustration with the healthcare system. Participants identified many barriers to having a healthy pregnancy and birth including inadequate support for decision making, differential treatment, and discrimination. CONCLUSIONS:This study shows novel and shared narratives regarding MOC experiences during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum periods. Healthcare providers have an essential role to acknowledge MOC, their experience of discrimination and mistrust, and to assess needs for support that can improve birth outcomes. As MOC and their families are at especially high social and medical risk for preterm birth, their voice and experience should be central in all future research on this topic
Bose-Einstein transition temperature in a dilute repulsive gas
We discuss certain specific features of the calculation of the critical
temperature of a dilute repulsive Bose gas. Interactions modify the critical
temperature in two different ways. First, for gases in traps, temperature
shifts are introduced by a change of the density profile, arising itself from a
modification of the equation of state of the gas (reduced compressibility);
these shifts can be calculated simply within mean field theory. Second, even in
the absence of a trapping potential (homogeneous gas in a box), temperature
shifts are introduced by the interactions; they arise from the correlations
introduced in the gas, and thus lie inherently beyond mean field theory - in
fact, their evaluation requires more elaborate, non-perturbative, calculations.
One illustration of this non-perturbative character is provided by the solution
of self-consistent equations, which relate together non-linearly the various
energy shifts of the single particle levels k. These equations predict that
repulsive interactions shift the critical temperature (at constant density) by
an amount which is positive, and simply proportional to the scattering length
a; nevertheless, the numerical coefficient is difficult to compute. Physically,
the increase of the temperature can be interpreted in terms of the reduced
density fluctuations introduced by the repulsive interactions, which facilitate

Diversity, urban space and the right to the provincial city
Using three vignettes of the same physical space this article contributes to understanding of how the right to the city is contested in provincial England in the early twenty-first century. Oral history and ethnographic material gathered in Peterborough between 2010 and 2012 are drawn on to shed new light on the politics of diversity and urban space. This highlights the multiple place attachments and trans-spatial practices of all residents, including the white ethnic majority, as well as contrasting forms of active intervention in space with their different temporalities and affective intensities. The article carries its own diversity politics, seeking to reduce the harm done by racism through challenging the normalisation of the idea of a local, indigenous population, left out by multiculturalism. It simultaneously raises critical questions about capitalist regeneration strategies in terms of their impact both on class inequality and on the environment
Extended Kramers-Moyal analysis applied to optical trapping
The Kramers-Moyal analysis is a well established approach to analyze
stochastic time series from complex systems. If the sampling interval of a
measured time series is too low, systematic errors occur in the analysis
results. These errors are labeled as finite time effects in the literature. In
the present article, we present some new insights about these effects and
discuss the limitations of a previously published method to estimate
Kramers-Moyal coefficients at the presence of finite time effects. To increase
the reliability of this method and to avoid misinterpretations, we extend it by
the computation of error estimates for estimated parameters using a Monte Carlo
error propagation technique. Finally, the extended method is applied to a data
set of an optical trapping experiment yielding estimations of the forces acting
on a Brownian particle trapped by optical tweezers. We find an increased
Markov-Einstein time scale of the order of the relaxation time of the process
which can be traced back to memory effects caused by the interaction of the
particle and the fluid. Above the Markov-Einstein time scale, the process can
be very well described by the classical overdamped Markov model for Brownian
