    Analysis of telephone network traffic based on a complex user network

    The traffic in telephone networks is analyzed in this paper. Unlike the classical traffic analysis where call blockings are due to the limited channel capacity, we consider here a more realistic cause for call blockings which is due to the way in which users are networked in a real-life human society. Furthermore, two kinds of user network, namely, the fully-connected user network and the scale-free network, are employed to model the way in which telephone users are connected. We show that the blocking probability is generally higher in the case of the scale-free user network, and that the carried traffic intensity is practically limited not only by the network capacity but also by the property of the user network.Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, accepted for Physica

    Motivational determinants of physical activity in disadvantaged populations with (pre)diabetes: A cross-cultural comparison

    Understanding motivational determinants of physical activity (PA) is essential to guide the implementation of PA at individual and population level. Knowledge about the cross-cultural generalizability of these determinants is lacking and they have mostly been studied as separate factors. This study compares a motivational process model across samples from diverse populations with, or at risk of diabetes.Measurement invariance of barrier identified regulation, barrier self-efficacy and social support was assessed in a rural Ugandan sample (n=712) and disadvantaged samples with high proportions of immigrants in urban South Africa (n=566) and Sweden (n=147).     The bacterial and fungal microbiomes of ectomycorrhizal roots from stone oaks and Yunnan pines in the subtropical forests of the Ailao Mountains of Yunnan

    Ectomycorrhizal (ECM) symbioses play an important role in tree biology and forest ecology. However, little is known on the composition of bacterial and fungal communities associated to ECM roots. In the present study, we surveyed the bacterial and fungal microbiome of ECM roots from stone oaks (Lithocarpus spp.) and Yunnan pines (Pinus yunnanensis) in the subtropical forests of the Ailao Mountains (Yunnan, China). The bacterial community was dominated by species pertaining to Rhizobiales and Acidobacteriales, whereas the fungal community was mainly composed of species belonging to the Russulales and Thelephorales. While the bacterial microbiome hosted by ECM roots from stone oaks and Yunnan pines was very similar, the mycobiome of these host trees was strikingly distinct. The microbial networks for bacterial and fungal communities showed a higher complexity in Lithocarpus ECM roots compared to Pinus ECM roots, but their modularity was higher in Pinus ECM roots. Seasonality also significantly influenced the fungal diversity and their co-occurrence network complexity. Our findings thus suggest that the community structure of fungi establishing and colonizing ECM roots can be influenced by the local soil/host tree environment and seasonality. These results expand our knowledge of the ECM root microbiome and its diversity in subtropical forest ecosystems

    Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy with late disease onset: clinical and molecular characteristics of 20 patients

    Background: Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is a mitochondrial disease that typically causes bilateral blindness in young men. Here we describe the clinical and molecular characteristics of 20 patients with disease onset after the age of 50 years (late onset-LHON). Methods: From a cohort of 251 affected and 277 unaffected LHON carriers, we identified 20 patients with onset of visual loss after the age of 50 years. Using structured questionnaires, data including basic demographic details, age of onset, progression of visual loss and severity as well as exposure to possible environmental triggers including alcohol, smoking and illicit drugs were retrospectively collected. Groups were compared using the Mann-Whitney-U-Test for two independent groups of sampled data. Results: The proportion of late onset-LHON in our cohort was 8% (20 patients, 15 males, 5 females). The mtDNA mutations m. 11778G  > A and m. 3460G  > A were found in 16 and 4 patients, respectively. Among 89 asymptomatic carriers above the age of 50 years (28 males, 61 females), the mtDNA mutations m. 11778G > A, m. 3460G  > A and m. 14484 T  > C were found in 60, 12 and 17 carriers, respectively. Late onset-LHON patients had significantly higher mean cumulative tobacco and alcohol consumption compared with unaffected carriers. However, there was no significant difference between late onset-and typical LHON patients with regard to daily tobacco and weekly alcohol consumption before disease onset. Conclusion: As already shown for typical LHON, alcohol consumption and smoking are important trigger factors also for the late manifestation. LHON should be considered in the differential diagnosis of subacute blindness even in older patients
