Hydrodynamic fluctuations in relativistic superfluids
The Hamiltonian formulation of superfluids based on noncanonical Poisson
brackets is studied in detail. The assumption that the momentum density is
proportional to the flow of the conserved energy is shown to lead to the
covariant relativistic theory previously suggested by Khalatnikov, Lebedev and
Carter, and some potentials in this theory are given explicitly. We discuss
hydrodynamic fluctuations in the presence of dissipative effects and we derive
the corresponding set of hydrodynamic correlation functions. Kubo relations for

Odorants for surveillance and control of the Asian Citrus Psyllid (Diaphorina citri).
BackgroundThe Asian Citrus Psyllid (ACP), Diaphorina citri, can transmit the bacterium Candidatus Liberibacter while feeding on citrus flush shoots. This bacterium causes Huanglongbing (HLB), a major disease of citrus cultivation worldwide necessitating the development of new tools for ACP surveillance and control. The olfactory system of ACP is sensitive to variety of odorants released by citrus plants and offers an opportunity to develop new attractants and repellents.ResultsIn this study, we performed single-unit electrophysiology to identify odorants that are strong activators, inhibitors, and prolonged activators of ACP odorant receptor neurons (ORNs). We identified a suite of odorants that activated the ORNs with high specificity and sensitivity, which may be useful in eliciting behavior such as attraction. In separate experiments, we also identified odorants that evoked prolonged ORN responses and antagonistic odorants able to suppress neuronal responses to activators, both of which can be useful in lowering attraction to hosts. In field trials, we tested the electrophysiologically identified activating odorants and identified a 3-odor blend that enhances trap catches by ∼230%.ConclusionThese findings provide a set of odorants that can be used to develop affordable and safe odor-based surveillance and masking strategies for this dangerous pest insect
Evidence for glutamate-mediated excitotoxic mechanisms during photoreceptor degeneration in the rd1 mouse retina
PURPOSE: Kinetic studies of photoreceptor cell death in the retinal degeneration (rd1) mouse model suggest that photoreceptor degeneration could result from cumulative damage. Since alterations in glutamate metabolism have been described in different models of retinitis pigmentosa, we investigated in the present work whether changes in glutamate turnover occur in the degenerating rd1 retina and whether glutamate-mediated excitotoxic mechanisms may contribute to rod photoreceptor death in this model. METHODS: Free amino acid levels were quantified in rd1 and wild-type retinas using an amino acid analyzer selecting times corresponding to early, intermediate, and terminal phases of rod photoreceptor degeneration. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to compare the mRNA expression levels of the glial L-glutamate/L-aspartate transporter GLAST, glutamine synthetase (GS), and vimentin, a marker for retinal glia, between rd1 and wild-type mouse retinas. 6-cyano-7-nitroquinoxaline-2,3-dione (CNQX), an antagonist of both AMPA and kainate subtypes of ionotropic glutamate receptors, was then daily administered from postnatal day 3 (PN3) to PN21 to rd1 mice while control rd1 mice received only physiological saline solution (7 per treatment). Fractional Operators, Dirichlet Averages, and Splines
Fractional differential and integral operators, Dirichlet averages, and
splines of complex order are three seemingly distinct mathematical subject
areas addressing different questions and employing different methodologies. It
is the purpose of this paper to show that there are deep and interesting
relationships between these three areas. First a brief introduction to
fractional differential and integral operators defined on Lizorkin spaces is
presented and some of their main properties exhibited. This particular approach
has the advantage that several definitions of fractional derivatives and
integrals coincide. We then introduce Dirichlet averages and extend their
definition to an infinite-dimensional setting that is needed to exhibit the
relationships to splines of complex order. Finally, we focus on splines of
complex order and, in particular, on cardinal B-splines of complex order. The
fundamental connections to fractional derivatives and integrals as well as
Dirichlet averages are presented

Large thermomagnetic effects in weakly disordered Heisenberg chains
The interplay of different scattering mechanisms can lead to novel effects in
transport. We show theoretically that the interplay of weak impurity and
Umklapp scattering in spin-1/2 chains leads to a pronounced dip in the magnetic
field dependence of the thermal conductivity at a magnetic field . In sufficiently clean samples, the reduction of the magnetic
contribution to heat transport can easily become larger than 50% and the effect
is predicted to exist even in samples with a large exchange coupling, J >> B,
where the field-induced magnetization is small. Qualitatively, our theory might
explain dips at observed in recent heat transport measurements on
copper pyrazine dinitrate, but a fully quantitative description is not possible

Langevin equation with scale-dependent noise
A new wavelet based technique for the perturbative solution of the Langevin
equation is proposed. It is shown that for the random force acting in a limited
band of scales the proposed method directly leads to a finite result with no
renormalization required. The one-loop contribution to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang

Geometrical complexity of data approximators
There are many methods developed to approximate a cloud of vectors embedded
in high-dimensional space by simpler objects: starting from principal points
and linear manifolds to self-organizing maps, neural gas, elastic maps, various
types of principal curves and principal trees, and so on. For each type of
approximators the measure of the approximator complexity was developed too.
These measures are necessary to find the balance between accuracy and
complexity and to define the optimal approximations of a given type. We propose
a measure of complexity (geometrical complexity) which is applicable to
approximators of several types and which allows comparing data approximations

Maser Source Finding Methods in HOPS
The {\bf H}{\bf O} Southern Galactic {\bf P}lane {\bf S}urvey (HOPS) has
observed 100 square degrees of the Galactic plane, using the Mopra radio
telescope to search for emission from multiple spectral lines in the 12\,mm
band (19.5\,--\,27.5\,GHz). Perhaps the most important of these spectral lines
is the 22.2\,GHz water maser transition. We describe the methods used to
identify water maser candidates and subsequent confirmation of the sources. Our
methods involve a simple determination of likely candidates by searching peak
emission maps, utilising the intrinsic nature of water maser emission -
spatially unresolved and spectrally narrow-lined. We estimate completeness
limits and compare our method with results from the {\sc Duchamp} source
finder. We find that the two methods perform similarly. We conclude that the
similarity in performance is due to the intrinsic limitation of the noise
characteristics of the data. The advantages of our method are that it is
slightly more efficient in eliminating spurious detections and is simple to
implement. The disadvantage is that it is a manual method of finding sources
and so is not practical on datasets much larger than HOPS, or for datasets with
extended emission that needs to be characterised. We outline a two-stage method
