    Ordinary Sensibilia

In this paper, I propose some philosophical reflections arising from the encounter with a work of art, namely the Squatting Aphrodite, which is one of the Roman copies that is held in the same room as the Venus de Milo in the Louvre Museum in Paris, France. From the description of this artwork and the effect it has on the spectator, I draw three main consequences: the conceptual difference between ordinary sensibility and everyday aesthetics; the criticism of aesthetic conformity, and the political implications of adopting an ordinary perspective towards aesthetic experience.

This article aims to grasp the intellectual and practical similarities between the concept of installation, which is traditionally assigned to the visual arts, and that of dance-movement, which isoften considered as ephemeral and transitory. Through this comparison one can draw up an innovative definition of the concept of artistic creation. At first sight there is nothing in commonbetween the choreographer’s process of creation and the productive action of artistic installation. However, the distinction between the two is blurred in certain exemplary works by Anna Halprin, Trisha Brown, Christian Rizzo, Boris Charmatz and Mette Ingvartsen. This could be explained by the influence of practice of happenings (Allan Kaprow) on contemporary art, in which artistic creation takes the form of a process, an event, a work in progress. By following this association of installation and dance one discovers that the element of air is presented as a genuinely plastic matter, a source of inspiration for artists that generates creative procedures.

Thermoregulation of alpacas bred in Italy

The present study monitored daily and seasonal variations of rectal temperature in response to different environmental temperatures in alpacas bred in the Italian Apennines at 300 m a. s. l. In each season, the rectal temperature of 33 clinically healthy alpacas was measured three times/day (morning, midday, afternoon). Ambient temperatures were also recorded. Rectal temperatures ranged from a minimum value of 35.1 to a maximum of 39.4\ub0C, with a maximum daily thermal excursion (\u394Trec) of 3.2\ub0C. Temperatures increased throughout the day, with highly significant differences recorded in both young and adult animals between all the time bands (P<0.001). These differences were particularly dramatic for adults in summer, when the mean rectal temperature in the morning was 36.3\ub10.13\ub0C, probably as a consequence of recent shearing. Significant \u394Trec differences were recorded depending on the season in both young and adult animals (P<0.001), with the highest \u394Trec values recorded in summer (although the highest daily ambient excursion value was recorded in winter). In conclusion, similarly to alpacas bred in their natural environment, alpacas bred in Italy show a wide thermal neutrality zone, which is probably an adaptive response, that allows the animals to save energy. In the Italian Apennines, in order to prevent situations of hypothermia, with possible detrimental effects on alpacas' health and welfare, shearing should be carried out only in warm seasons

Inspired by the text entitled The Collapse of the Fact/Value Dichotomy and Other Essays (2004) of Hilary Putnam, the volume focuses on the theory and practice of knowledge, but one can legitimately extend it to other fields, most especially in aesthetics. Certain observable features in the fields of aesthetics, practice and artistic creation show that old evaluation criteria may now be obsolete. This is because upon further consideration, the definition of value remains opaque : should the artwork be judged according to its moral value, its market value, or its formal value ? To side with or against the concept of value in art and aesthetics does not preclude a certain number of differences concerning the very nature of what is meant by value. If traditionally the ‘fact’ was the work, taken in all its tangibility, currently the materiality of the object no longer seems to play such a major role. Art is increasingly populated by so-called ‘immaterial’ or ‘ephemeral’ works and is therefore rarely, or badly, quantifiable according to old aesthetic and economic evaluation criteria. The progressively pragmatic contextualization of works within the social space puts forward a new definition of aesthetic value, no longer eternal and ideal, but rather anchored in the sensible and the politico-economic issues of a culturally specific situation. The current changes too support the idea that the question of ‘value’ and its confrontation with the concept of ‘fact’ is urgent. What role do artistic practices and aesthetic theories play ? A role of emancipation, of liberation, escape, or transformation ? Or on the contrary, could art become another means to subject individuals to the status quo ? As can easily be noticed, the question of maintaining or rejecting the dichotomy of facts and values is at the heart of the most pressing issues

Ultra-Low Power and Green TSCH-Based WSNs With Proactive Reduction of Idle Listening

Wireless sensor networks are characterized by low power consumption because motes are typically battery-powered. Time slotted channel hopping (TSCH) relies on a fixed transmission schedule, which enables the receiver module of wireless motes to be switched off every time it is not needed. Unfortunately, in many practical contexts most of the reserved slots remain unused, which leads to appreciable energy waste. For periodic traffic, proactive reduction of idle listening (PRIL) techniques have been proven able to mitigate this problem. In this paper, PRIL multi-hop (PRIL-M) is introduced with the aim to improve existing PRIL techniques, by lowering energy waste further in large real-world mesh networks. PRIL-M is advantageous in all those contexts where ultra-low power consumption is more important than end-to-end latency. Applications that can benefit from PRIL-M include, e.g., environmental monitoring, where sensors are deployed over the target area and must operate for years without maintenance. A thorough simulation campaign showed that, in these scenarios, energy consumption of PRIL-M is 75% less than standard TSCH, while the average latency is about 20 times larger

The lack of implementation of well-designed public policies aimed at the conservation of natural ecosystems has resulted, at a global level, in the decline of ecosystem functioning and, consequently, of the contributions they make to people. The poor enforcement of important environmental legislation in Brazil-for instance, the “Atlantic Forest Law” (Law n.11.428/2006) and the “Forest Code” (Law n.12.651/2012)-could compromise the overall maintenance of ecosystems and the services they provide. To explore the implications of different levels of federal laws’ enforcement within the Cantareira System Protected Area (PA)-a PA in southeastern Brazil that provides fresh water for 47% of the Sao Paulo Metropolitan Area-, we developed a conceptual framework to identify indirect and direct drives of biodiversity and ecosystem changes. We also projected four land-use scenarios to 2050 to test the effects of deforestation control and forest restoration practices on biodiversity and ecosystem services maintenance: the “business-as-usual” scenario (BAU), which assumes that all trends in land-use cover changes observed in the past will continue in the future, and three alternative exploratory scenarios considering the Atlantic Forest Law implementation, the partial implementation of the Forest Code and the full implementation of the Forest Code. Using the land-use maps generated for each scenario, we assessed the impacts of land-use changes on biodiversity conservation and soil retention. Our results revealed all alternative scenarios could increase biodiversity conservation (by 7%; 12%; and 12%, respectively), reduce soil loss (by 24.70%; 34.70%; and 38.12%, respectively) and sediment exportation to water (by 27.47%; 55.06%; and 59.28%, respectively), when compared to the BAU scenario. Our findings highlight the importance of restoring and conserving native vegetation for the maintenance and improvement of biodiversity conservation and for the provision of ecosystem services. Fil: Dib, Viviane. Dancing in the office: A study of gestures as resistance

    Get PDF
Following the art-body-ethics turn in management studies we use dance as an analogy in order to explore how the body can resist organisational control in office work contexts. We argue that in office work gestures can be a site of post-recognition resistance. Drawing on two art videos and on dance studies, we explain that this is operated either through arrest or through flow. In fact aesthetic experiments in gesturing disrupt the work rhythm needed for organisational efficiency and enforced by organisational control. This allows us to contribute primarily to the literature on resistance in organisation studies and relatedly to the growing literature on dance in organisation studies through demonstrating how dance can be a source of resistance

Estética da indiferença: o tédio, sentimento paradigmático da arte contemporânea

    No full text
ABSTRACT The actual text deals with the ordinary character of contemporary art, in which its technique has less value than the art itself as well as it does not translate the essence of beauty whatsoever, boredom and insensibility are its fundamental elements. According to the author, this aesthete can be called as aesthete of indifference. So, in the aesthete of contemporary art, feeling is absent and what remains is indifference. The anesthetic feeling in its sensibility has its main expression in boredom. Despite indifference, insensibility and boredom are part of contemporary art, these aspects do not however, make of it something unessential to life. Key words: Art; aesthete; indifference; boredom; contemporary art
