Realizing time crystals in discrete quantum few-body systems
The exotic phenomenon of time translation symmetry breaking under periodic
driving - the time crystal - has been shown to occur in many-body systems even
in clean setups where disorder is absent. In this work, we propose the
realization of time-crystals in few-body systems, both in the context of
trapped cold atoms with strong interactions and of a circuit of superconducting
qubits. We show how these two models can be treated in a fairly similar way by
adopting an effective spin chain description, to which we apply a simple
driving protocol. We focus on the response of the magnetization in the presence
of imperfect pulses and interactions, and show how the results can be
interpreted, in the cold atomic case, in the context of experiments with
trapped bosons and fermions. Furthermore, we provide a set of realistic
parameters for the implementation of the superconducting circuit.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
General Tests of Latent Variable Models and Mean-Variance Spanning
The methods of Gibbons and Ferson (1985) are extended, relaxing the assumption that expected returns are linear functions of predetermined instruments. A model of conditional mean-variance spanning generalizes Huberman and Kandel (1987). The empirical results indicate that more than a single risk premium is needed to model expected stock and bond returns, but the number of common factors in the expected returns is small. However, when size-based common stock portfolios proxy for the risk factors, we reject the hypothesis that four of them describe the conditional expected returns of the other assets
Magnetic Susceptibility of an integrable anisotropic spin ladder system
We investigate the thermodynamics of a spin ladder model which possesses a
free parameter besides the rung and leg couplings. The model is exactly solved
by the Bethe Ansatz and exhibits a phase transition between a gapped and a
gapless spin excitation spectrum. The magnetic susceptibility is obtained
numerically and its dependence on the anisotropy parameter is determined. A
connection with the compounds KCuCl3, Cu2(C5H12N2)2Cl4 and (C5H12N)2CuBr4 in
the strong coupling regime is made and our results for the magnetic
susceptibility fit the experimental data remarkably well.Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures included, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Quantum phase transitions in an interacting atom-molecule boson model
We study the quantum phase transitions of a model that describes the interconversion of interacting bosonic atoms and molecules. Using a classical analysis, we identify a threshold coupling line separating a molecular phase and a mixed phase. Through studies of the energy gap, von Neumann entanglement entropy, and fidelity, we give evidence that this line is associated with a boundary line in the ground-state phase diagram of the quantum system. © 2010 The American Physical Society
Generation of spin currents by a temperature gradient in a two-terminal device
Theoretical and experimental studies of the interaction between spins and
temperature are vital for the development of spin caloritronics, as they
dictate the design of future devices. In this work, we propose a two-terminal
cold-atom simulator to study that interaction. The proposed quantum simulator
consists of strongly interacting atoms that occupy two temperature reservoirs
connected by a one-dimensional link. First, we argue that the dynamics in the
link can be described using an inhomogeneous Heisenberg spin chain whose
couplings are defined by the local temperature. Second, we show the existence
of a spin current in a system with a temperature difference by studying the
dynamics that follows the spin-flip of an atom in the link. A temperature
gradient accelerates the impurity in one direction more than in the other,
leading to an overall spin current similar to the spin Seebeck effect.Comment: 33 pages, 6 figure
Integrable multiparametric quantum spin chains
Using Reshetikhin's construction for multiparametric quantum algebras we
obtain the associated multiparametric quantum spin chains. We show that under
certain restrictions these models can be mapped to quantum spin chains with
twisted boundary conditions. We illustrate how this general formalism applies
to construct multiparametric versions of the supersymmetric t-J and U models.Comment: 17 pages, RevTe
