In this paper we undertake a literature review analyzing John Dunning’s contribution for international business and strategy research. We examine Dunning’s articles and other works and carry out a bibliometric study in the Strategic Management Journal, in the period from 1980 to 2009, a thirty years period. We conclude that beyond the more obvious contribution to the international business discipline with the Eclectic paradigm (OLI – Ownership, Location, Internalization), Dunning’s influence extends to other theories and concepts. Specifically, we observe connections to the resource-based view, transaction costs theory, the evolutionary theory and more broadly to the theory of the multinational enterprise.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

We describe a new selection method based on BODIPY (4,4-difluoro-1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene) staining, fluorescence activated cell sorting (FACS) and microplate-based isolation of lipid-rich microalgae from an environmental sample. Our results show that direct sorting onto solid medium upon FACS can save about 3 weeks during the scale-up process as compared with the growth of the same cultures in liquid medium. This approach enabled us to isolate a biodiverse collection of several axenic and unialgal cultures of different phyla

The objective of this study was to assess determining factors of body mass index (BMI) in adolescents enrolled in public schools in Piracicaba, São Paulo. The sample had 328 adolescents from both genders; minimum age was 10 years old. We have assessed weight, height, sexual maturity, physical activity, and diet. A multiple linear regression model was used to assess the association between independent variables and BMI. While girls considered physically active presented greater mean BMI than those insufficiently active, boys did not present statistical difference between mean BMI among those active and those insufficiently active. Sexual maturity was a determinant for BMI, for both genders, reinforcing the idea that it is essential to take this variable into account in studies that assess the nutritional situation in adolescents. We believe that the methods used in the present study, which are normally used in similar surveys, have important limitations to assess the influence of variables such as the level of physical activity and food intake on the BMI of adolescents. Thus, it is important to improve these methods and adopt them in further studies

Spatiotemporal control of mitosis by the conserved spindle matrix protein Megator

A putative spindle matrix has been hypothesized to mediate chromosome motion, but its existence and functionality remain controversial. In this report, we show that Megator (Mtor), the Drosophila melanogaster counterpart of the human nuclear pore complex protein translocated promoter region (Tpr), and the spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC) protein Mad2 form a conserved complex that localizes to a nuclear derived spindle matrix in living cells. Fluorescence recovery after photobleaching experiments supports that Mtor is retained around spindle microtubules, where it shows distinct dynamic properties. Mtor/Tpr promotes the recruitment of Mad2 and Mps1 but not Mad1 to unattached kinetochores (KTs), mediating normal mitotic duration and SAC response. At anaphase, Mtor plays a role in spindle elongation, thereby affecting normal chromosome movement. We propose that Mtor/Tpr functions as a spatial regulator of the SAC, which ensures the efficient recruitment of Mad2 to unattached KTs at the onset of mitosis and proper spindle maturation, whereas enrichment of Mad2 in a spindle matrix helps confine the action of a diffusible “wait anaphase” signal to the vicinity of the spindle

Calpastatin Overexpression Preserves Cognitive Function Following Seizures, While Maintaining Post-Injury Neurogenesis

In the adult mammalian brain, new neurons continue to be produced throughout life in two main regions in the brain, the subgranular zone (SGZ) in the hippocampus and the subventricular zone in the walls of the lateral ventricles. Neural stem cells (NSCs) proliferate in these niches, and migrate as neuroblasts, to further differentiate in locations where new neurons are needed, either in normal or pathological conditions. However, the endogenous attempt of brain repair is not very efficient. Calpains are proteases known to be involved in neuronal damage and in cell proliferation, migration and differentiation of several cell types, though their effects on neurogenesis are not well known. Previous work by our group has shown that the absence of calpastatin (CAST), the endogenous inhibitor of calpains, impairs early stages of neurogenesis. Since the hippocampus is highly associated with learning and memory, we aimed to evaluate whether calpain inhibition would help improve cognitive recovery after lesion and efficiency of post-injury neurogenesis in this region. For that purpose, we used the kainic acid (KA) model of seizure-induced hippocampal lesion and mice overexpressing CAST. Selected cognitive tests were performed on the 3rd and 8th week after KA-induced lesion, and cell proliferation, migration and differentiation in the dentate gyrus (DG) of the hippocampus of adult mice were analyzed using specific markers. Cognitive recovery was evaluated by testing the animals for recognition, spatial and associative learning and memory. Cognitive function was preserved by CAST overexpression following seizures, while modulation of post-injury neurogenesis was similar to wild type (WT) mice. Calpain inhibition could still be potentially able to prevent the impairment in the formation of new neurons, given that the levels of calpain activity could be reduced under a certain threshold and other harmful effects from the pathological environment could also be controlled.Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT, Portugal); FCT [SFRH/BD/78050/2011, SFRH/BD/79308/2011]; COMPETE; FEDER [PTDC/SAU-NMC/112183/2009, UID/NEU/04539/2013, UID/BIM/04773/2013]info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The sludges produced in the cutting and polishing of ornamental stones are residues with diverse chemical composition that depend on the composition of the stones, the cutting and polishing process, the processes involved in the recycling of water and sludges, among others. The characterization and classification of these resulting sludges have great importance, especially for the State of Espírito Santo, Brazil, which is an important producer of ornamental stones. In this work, the results of characterization and classification of developmental and polishing sludges were presented, according to the Brazilian standard NBR 10004/2004. All the sludge samples from the cutting and polishing equipment were classified as Class IIA. We observed that the identification of the residues according to the generation source allows the proposition of clean technologies usage, such as cutting equipment with diamond coated wires, that use a minimum of raw materials, and metal diamond coated pads, free of toxic material, thus contributing to improve the chemical characteristics of these sludges

INTRODUCTION: Physical activity has contributed to the prevention of complications in mental health elderly. OBJECTIVE: To investigate graduate programs that present, as lines of research and teaching, the relationship between mental health and physical activity in elderly. METHODS: A descriptive and exploratory study, which presents as indicators the inclusion of both disciplines and research lines in graduate programs on Physical Education, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy and Gerontology. Thirty graduate courses (stricto sensu) in Brazil, all of them recognized and recommended by the Ministry of Education. The disciplines, lines of research and publications, which contained their description "mental health", "physical activity" and "aging" were selected. RESULTS: The disciplines comprising the subjects physical activities and aging were found in the following states: five universities in the State of S&atilde;o Paulo, a discipline in the State of Minas Gerais and the Federal District. Only two disciplines included "mental health", "physical activity" and "aging". One in the State of S&atilde;o Paulo and another in the State of Rio de Janeiro. CONCLUSION: Despite the Brazilian population growing older and the increased concern on issues related to quality of life in the elderly - including the need to preserve the physical and mental health - only few graduate programs on Physical Education, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy are offering disciplines or comprising research/publications on mental health, physical activity and aging.</p

Subcutaneous, Oral, and Intranasal Immunization of BALB/c Mice with <i>Leishmania infantum</i> K39 Antigen Induces Non-Protective Humoral Immune Response

Visceral leishmaniasis is a high-burden disease caused by parasites of the Leishmania genus. The K39 kinesin is a highly antigenic protein of Leishmania infantum, but little is known about the immune response elicited by this antigen. We evaluated the humoral immune response of female BALB/c mice (n = 6) immunized with the rK39-HFBI construct, formed by the fusion of the K39 antigen to a hydrophobin partner. The rK39-HFBI construct was administered through subcutaneous, oral, and intranasal routes using saponin as an adjuvant. We analyzed the kinetics of IgG, IgG1, and IgG2a production. The groups were then challenged by an intravenous infection with L. infantum promastigote cells. The rK39-HFBI antigen-induced high levels of total IgG (p p < 0.05), suggesting a potential secondary immune response following the booster dose. There was no reduction in the splenic parasite load; thus, the rK39-HFBI failed to protect the mice against infection under the tested conditions. The results presented here demonstrate that the high antigenicity of the K39 antigen does not contribute to a protective immune response against visceral leishmaniasis

Report of <i>in vitro</i> antileishmanial properties of Iberian macroalgae

<p>Here is reported the anti <i>Leishmania infantum</i> activity of 48 hexane, CH2Cl2 and MeOH extracts from 16 macroalgae collected on the Iberian Coast. Seven hexane and CH2Cl2 <i>Cystoseira baccata, Cystoseira barbata, Cystoseira tamariscifolia, Cystoseira usneoides, Dictyota spiralis</i> and <i>Plocamium cartilagineum</i> extracts were active towards promastigotes (IC50 29.8–101.8 μg/mL) inducing strong morphological alterations in the parasites. Hexane extracts of <i>C. baccata</i> and <i>C. barbata</i> were also active against intracellular amastigotes (IC50 5.1 and 6.8 μg/mL, respectively). Fatty acids, triacylglycerols, carotenoids, steroids and meroterpenoids were detected by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and gas chromatography in the <i>Cystoseira</i> extracts. These results suggest that <i>Cystoseira</i> macroalgae contain compounds with antileishmanial activity, which could be explored as scaffolds to the development of novel sources of antiparasitic derivatives.</p
