Theory of Non-Reciprocal Optical Effects in Antiferromagnets: The Case Cr_2O_3
A microscopic model of non-reciprocal optical effects in antiferromagnets is
developed by considering the case of Cr_2O_3 where such effects have been
observed. These effects are due to a direct coupling between light and the
antiferromagnetic order parameter. This coupling is mediated by the spin-orbit
interaction and involves an interplay between the breaking of inversion
symmetry due to the antiferromagnetic order parameter and the trigonal field
contribution to the ligand field at the magnetic ion. We evaluate the matrix
elements relevant for the non-reciprocal second harmonic generation and

Early stages of ramified growth in quasi-two-dimensional electrochemical deposition
I have measured the early stages of the growth of branched metal aggregates
formed by electrochemical deposition in very thin layers. The growth rate of
spatial Fourier modes is described qualitatively by the results of a linear
stability analysis [D.P. Barkey, R.H. Muller, and C.W. Tobias, J. Electrochem.
Soc. {\bf 136}, 2207 (1989)]. The maximum growth rate is proportional to
where is the current through the electrochemical cell,
the electrolyte concentration, and . Differences
between my results and the theoretical predictions suggest that
electroconvection in the electrolyte has a large influence on the instability

Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in NaVO: a microscopic study
We present a unified account of magnetic exchange and Raman scattering in the
quasi-one-dimensional transition-metal oxide NaVO. Based on a
cluster-model approach explicit expressions for the exchange integral and the
Raman-operator are given. It is demonstrated that a combination of the
electronic-structure and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, allowed by
symmetry in this material, are responsible for the finite Raman cross-section
giving rise to both, one- and two-magnon scattering amplitudes.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figur
The supernova CSS121015:004244+132827: a clue for understanding super-luminous supernovae
We present optical photometry and spectra of the super luminous type II/IIn
supernova CSS121015:004244+132827 (z=0.2868) spanning epochs from -30 days
(rest frame) to more than 200 days after maximum. CSS121015 is one of the more
luminous supernova ever found and one of the best observed. The photometric
evolution is characterized by a relatively fast rise to maximum (~40 days in
the SN rest frame), and by a linear post-maximum decline. The light curve shows
no sign of a break to an exponential tail. A broad Halpha is first detected at
~ +40 days (rest-frame). Narrow, barely-resolved Balmer and [O III] 5007 A
lines, with decreasing strength, are visible along the entire spectral
evolution. The spectra are very similar to other super luminous supernovae
(SLSNe) with hydrogen in their spectrum, and also to SN 2005gj, sometimes
considered a type Ia interacting with H-rich CSM. The spectra are also similar
to a subsample of H-deficient SLSNe. We propose that the properties of
CSS121015 are consistent with the interaction of the ejecta with a massive,
extended, opaque shell, lost by the progenitor decades before the final
explosion, although a magnetar powered model cannot be excluded. Based on the
similarity of CSS121015 with other SLSNe (with and without H), we suggest that
the shocked-shell scenario should be seriously considered as a plausible model

Ataxia with oculomotor apraxia type 2: clinical, biological and genotype/phenotype correlation study of a cohort of 90 patients
Ataxia with oculomotor apraxia type 2 (AOA2) is an autosomal recessive disease due to mutations in the senataxin gene, causing progressive cerebellar ataxia with peripheral neuropathy, cerebellar atrophy, occasional oculomotor apraxia and elevated alpha-feto-protein (AFP) serum level. We compiled a series of 67 previously reported and 58 novel ataxic patients who underwent senataxin gene sequencing because of suspected AOA2. An AOA2 diagnosis was established for 90 patients, originating from 15 countries worldwide, and 25 new senataxin gene mutations were found. In patients with AOA2, median AFP serum level was 31.0 mu g/l at diagnosis, which was higher than the median AFP level of AOA2 negative patients: 13.8 mu g/l, P = 0.0004; itself higher than the normal level (3.4 mu g/l, range from 0.5 to 17.2 mu g/l) because elevated AFP was one of the possible selection criteria. Polyneuropathy was found in 97.5% of AOA2 patients, cerebellar atrophy in 96%, occasional oculomotor apraxia in 51%, pyramidal signs in 20.5%, head tremor in 14%, dystonia in 13.5%, strabismus in 12.3% and chorea in 9.5%. No patient was lacking both peripheral neuropathy and cerebellar atrophy. The age at onset and presence of occasional oculomotor apraxia were negatively correlated to the progression rate of the disease (P = 0.03 and P = 0.009, respectively), whereas strabismus was positively correlated to the progression rate (P = 0.03). An increased AFP level as well as cerebellar atrophy seem to be stable in the course of the disease and to occur mostly at or before the onset of the disease. One of the two patients with a normal AFP level at diagnosis had high AFP levels 4 years later, while the other had borderline levels. The probability of missing AOA2 diagnosis, in case of sequencing senataxin gene only in non-Friedreich ataxia non-ataxia-telangiectasia ataxic patients with AFP level >= 7 mu g/l, is 0.23% and the probability for a non-Friedreich ataxia non-ataxia-telangiectasia ataxic patient to be affected with AOA2 with AFP levels >= 7 mu g/l is 46%. Therefore, selection of patients with an AFP level above 7 mu g/l for senataxin gene sequencing is a good strategy for AOA2 diagnosis. Pyramidal signs and dystonia were more frequent and disease was less severe with missense mutations in the helicase domain of senataxin gene than with missense mutations out of helicase domain and deletion and nonsense mutations (P = 0.001, P = 0.008 and P = 0.01, respectively). The lack of pyramidal signs in most patients may be explained by masking due to severe motor neuropathy
Nonclassical Interference Effects In The Radiation From Coherently Driven Uncorrelated Atoms
We demonstrate the existence of new nonclassical correlations in the
radiation of two atoms, which are coherently driven by a continuous laser
source. The photon-photon-correlations of the fluorescence light show a spatial
interferene pattern not present in a classical treatment. A feature of the new
phenomenon is, that bunched and antibunched light is emitted in different
spatial directions. The calculations are performed analytically. It is pointed
out, that the correlations are induced by state reduction due to the
measurement process when the detection of the photons does not distinguish
between the atoms. It is interesting to note, that the phenomena show up even
without any interatomic interaction.Comment: 4 pages, 6 Figure
What’s Sex (Composition) Got to Do with It? The Importance of Sex Composition of Gangs for Female and Male Members’ Offending and Victimization
Sex composition of groups has been theorized in organizational sociology and found in prior work to structure female and male members’ behaviors and experiences. Peer group and gang literature similarly finds that the sex gap in offending varies across groups of differing sex ratios. Drawing on this and other research linking gang membership, offending, and victimization, we examine whether sex composition of gangs is linked to sex differences in offending in this sample, further assess whether sex composition similarly structures females’ and males’ victimization experiences, and if so, why. Self-report data from gang members in a multi-site, longitudinal study of 3,820 youths are employed. Results support previous findings about variations in member delinquency by both sex and sex composition of the gang and also indicate parallel variations in members’ victimization. These results are further considered within the context of facilitating effects such as gender dynamics, gang characteristics, and normative orientation
Biharmonic pattern selection
A new model to describe fractal growth is discussed which includes effects
due to long-range coupling between displacements . The model is based on the
biharmonic equation in two-dimensional isotropic defect-free
media as follows from the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation for pattern formation
-or, alternatively, from the theory of elasticity. As a difference with
Laplacian and Poisson growth models, in the new model the Laplacian of is
neither zero nor proportional to . Its discretization allows to reproduce a
transition from dense to multibranched growth at a point in which the growth
velocity exhibits a minimum similarly to what occurs within Poisson growth in
planar geometry. Furthermore, in circular geometry the transition point is
estimated for the simplest case from the relation
such that the trajectories become stable at the growing surfaces in a
continuous limit. Hence, within the biharmonic growth model, this transition
depends only on the system size and occurs approximately at a distance far from a central seed particle. The influence of biharmonic patterns on

Multiparticle Biased DLA with surface diffusion: a comprehensive model of electrodeposition
We present a complete study of the Multiparticle Biased Diffusion-Limited
Aggregation (MBDLA) model supplemented with surface difussion (SD), focusing on
the relevance and effects of the latter transport mechanism. By comparing
different algorithms, we show that MBDLA+SD is a very good qualitative model
for electrodeposition in practically all the range of current intensities {\em
provided} one introduces SD in the model in the proper fashion: We have found
that the correct procedure involves simultaneous bulk diffusion and SD,
introducing a time scale arising from the ratio of the rates of both processes.
We discuss in detail the different morphologies obtained and compare them to
the available experimental data with very satisfactory results. We also
characterize the aggregates thus obtained by means of the dynamic scaling
exponents of the interface height, allowing us to distinguish several regimes
in the mentioned interface growth. Our asymptotic scaling exponents are again
in good agreement with recent experiments. We conclude by discussing a global
