Natural Enemies of Alfalfa Weevil, \u3ci\u3eHypera Postica\u3c/i\u3e (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), in Minnesota

Alfalfa weevil, Hypera postica, is present throughout Minnesota. How- ever, economically damaging populations seldom occur, due to a combination of natural enemies and adverse climatic conditions. Five natural enemies of alfalfa weevil were found in Minnesota. Microctonus aethiopoides (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a parasitoid of adults, was recovered from 43 of 65 counties surveyed during 1984 and 1985. Tetrastichus incertus (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) and Bathyplectes curculionis (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), para­sitoids of larvae, were each recovered from 13 of 15 counties surveyed during 1991-1993. Bathyplectes anurus, another parasitoid of larvae, was recovered from one county In 1991, four counties in 1992, and six counties in 1993. Zoophthora phytonomi (Entomophthora: Entomophthoraceae), a pathogen of larvae, was recovered from 14 of 15 counties surveyed in 1991-1993. Winters with low minimum temperatures and little snow cover were detrimental to the weevil. Usually, southeastern Minnesota has milder winters and higher alfalfa weevil populations than other areas of the State. However, even here, because of natural enemies, weevil populations seldom reach economically damaging levels

Equilibrium of Land Values from Agricultural and General Economic Factors for Cropland and Pasture Capitalization in Georgia

Nonagricultural factors impact land values to cause a divergence of discounted cash rents for agricultural land and land values in Georgia. General economic factors are represented by per capita income in nonmetro areas. Cash rents for cropland and pasture have positive impacts on land values. Nonagricultural factors are stronger influences on land values than are cash rents. Greater effective demand exists for pasture than for cropland because pasture is subject to relatively more pricing pressure in northern counties with higher incomes and population. Topological aspect of graphene physics

Topological aspects of graphene are reviewed focusing on the massless Dirac fermions with/without magnetic field. Doubled Dirac cones of graphene are topologically protected by the chiral symmetry. The quantum Hall effect of the graphene is described by the Berry connection of a manybody state by the filled Landau levels which naturally possesses non-Abelian gauge structures. Clostridium difficile infection in the United States: A national study assessing preventive practices used and perceptions of practice evidence

We surveyed 571 US hospitals about practices used to prevent Clostridium difficile infection (CDI). Most hospitals reported regularly using key CDI prevention practices, and perceived their strength of evidence as high. Three seemingly disparate Communities of Practice (CoPs)—Urban Integrated Pest Management (Urban IPM), Wildlife Damage Management (WDM), and Imported Fire Ants—came together to promote IPM and WDM by sharing information on websites and through webinars. Originally, each CoP on the eXtension web site was set up to be a unique information source. It became clear very early in eXtension’s development that many of these unique, single-topic sites had information that could be used by others. Application of Advanced Reservoir Characterization, Simulation and Production Optimization Strategies to Maximize Recovery in Slope and Basin Clastic Reservoirs, West Texas (Delaware Basin)

The objective of this Class III project is to demonstrate that detailed reservoir characterization of slope and basin elastic reservoirs in sandstones of the Delaware Mountain Group in the Delaware Basin of West Texas and New Mexico is a cost-effective way to recover oil more economically through geologically based field development. The project is focused on East Ford, a Delaware Mountain Group field that produces from the upper Bell Canyon Formation (Ramsey sandstone). The field, discovered in 1960, is operated by Orla Petco, Inc., as the East Ford unit. A CO2 flood is being conducted in the unit, and this flood is the Phase 2 demonstration for the project. Reservoir characterization was conducted using logs and pressure and production information from the East Ford unit, supplemented by Bell Canyon outcrop data and information from the nearby Geraldine Ford field. Characterization was enhanced this year by recovery of a core from the Ramsey reservoir interval in the EFU 41R well. Ramsey sandstones are interpreted as having been deposited in a basin-floor setting in a channel-levee system with attached lobes. Overbank splays are interpreted as being the main area of sand storage outside of the channels. Porosity and permeability of the reservoir sandstones are controlled by calcite cement that can be concentrated in layers ranging from 5 to 40 cm in thickness. These laterally extensive calcite-cemented layers form significant vertical permeability baffles in some areas of the reservoir.Bureau of Economic Geolog

On the Theory of Superfluidity in Two Dimensions

The superfluid phase transition of the general vortex gas, in which the circulations may be any non-zero integer, is studied. When the net circulation of the system is not zero the absence of a superfluid phase is shown. When the net circulation of the vortices vanishes, the presence of off-diagonal long range order is demonstrated and the existence of an order parameter is proposed. The transition temperature for the general vortex gas is shown to be the Kosterlitz---Thouless temperature.
