An empirical analysis of M4 in the United Kingdom
This paper presents an econometric analysis of M4 balances based on a split between the personal and corporate sectors. For the personal sector we find that simultaneous estimation of the demand of money and a consumption function yields encouraging results. The dynamic interaction of money and consumption may have an important role to play in explaining the recent behaviour of both variables. Modelling the corporate sector's money holdings is more problematic. The endogeneity of interest rates cannot be ignored and corporate behaviour is more likely to resemble the portfolio allocation than a traditional demand for money approach. Nevertheless, a relatively simple model can be estimated for corporate sector M4, which offers a starting point for future research.(jvc)(pgf)(jha
Fluctuations of the Casimir-like force between two membrane inclusions
Although Casimir forces are inseparable from their fluctuations, little is
known about these fluctuations in soft matter systems. We use the membrane
stress tensor to study the fluctuations of the membrane-mediated Casimir-like
force. This method enables us to recover the Casimir force between two
inclusions and to calculate its variance. We show that the Casimir force is
dominated by its fluctuations. Furthermore, when the distance d between the
inclusions is decreased from infinity, the variance of the Casimir force
decreases as -1/d^2. This distance dependence shares a common physical origin

Universal point contact resistance between thin-film superconductors
A system comprising two superconducting thin films connected by a point
contact is considered. The contact resistance is calculated as a function of
temperature and film geometry, and is found to vanish rapidly with temperature,
according to a universal, nearly activated form, becoming strictly zero only at
zero temperature. At the lowest temperatures, the activation barrier is set
primarily by the superfluid stiffness in the films, and displays only a weak
(i.e., logarithmic) temperature dependence. The Josephson effect is thus
destroyed, albeit only weakly, as a consequence of the power-law-correlated
superconducting fluctuations present in the films below the
Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature. The behavior of the
resistance is discussed, both in various limiting regimes and as it crosses
over between these regimes. Details are presented of a minimal model of the
films and the contact, and of the calculation of the resistance. A formulation
in terms of quantum phase-slip events is employed, which is natural and
effective in the limit of a good contact. However, it is also shown to be
effective even when the contact is poor and is, indeed, indispensable, as the
system always behaves as if it were in the good-contact limit at low enough
temperature. A simple mechanical analogy is introduced to provide some
heuristic understanding of the nearly-activated temperature dependence of the
resistance. Prospects for experimental tests of the predicted behavior are
discussed, and numerical estimates relevant to anticipated experimental

Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series constructed from quadratic characters
We construct multiple Dirichlet series in several complex variables whose
coefficients involve quadratic residue symbols. The series are shown to have an
analytic continuation and satisfy a certain group of functional equations.
These are the first examples of an infinite collection of unstable Weyl group

Political participation: the vocational motivations of Labour party employees
Party employees are an under-researched group in political science. This article begins to address this oversight by examining Labour Party employees using new quantitative and qualitative data. It argues that party employment should be regarded as a form of political participation and as a consequence, existing models of political participation can be utilised to help explain why people work for political parties. After testing these propositions, the article concludes that existing models are indeed helpful in explaining the motivations for party employment
Turbulent drag on a low-frequency vibrating grid in superfluid He-4 at very low temperatures
We present measurements of the dissipative turbulent drag on a vibrating grid in superfluid He-4 over a wide range of (low) frequencies. At high velocities, the dissipative drag is independent of frequency and is approximately the same as that measured in normal liquid He-4. We present measurements on a similar grid in superfluid He-3-B at low temperatures which shows an almost identical turbulent drag coefficient at low frequencies. However, the turbulent drag in He-3-B is substantially higher at higher frequencies. We also present measurements of the inertial drag coefficient for grid turbulence in He-4. The inertial drag coefficient is significantly reduced by turbulence in both superfluid and normal liquid He-4
How bias correction goes wrong: measurement of X_(CO_2) affected by erroneous surface pressure estimates
All measurements of X_(CO_2) from space have systematic errors. To reduce a large fraction of these errors, a bias correction is applied to X_(CO_2) retrieved from GOSAT and OCO-2 spectra using the ACOS retrieval algorithm. The bias correction uses, among other parameters, the surface pressure difference between the retrieval and the meteorological reanalysis. Relative errors in the surface pressure estimates, however, propagate nearly 1:1 into relative errors in bias-corrected X_(CO_2). For OCO-2, small errors in the knowledge of the pointing of the observatory (up to ∼130 arcsec) introduce a bias in X_(CO_2) in regions with rough topography. Erroneous surface pressure estimates are also caused by a coding error in ACOS version 8, sampling meteorological analyses at wrong times (up to 3 h after the overpass time). Here, we derive new geolocations for OCO-2's eight footprints and show how using improved knowledge of surface pressure estimates in the bias correction reduces errors in OCO-2's v9 X_(CO_2) data
Pressure Induced Change in the Magnetic Modulation of CeRhIn5
We report the results of a high pressure neutron diffraction study of the
heavy fermion compound CeRhIn5 down to 1.8 K. CeRhIn5 is known to order
magnetically below 3.8 K with an incommensurate structure. The application of
hydrostatic pressure up to 8.6 kbar produces no change in the magnetic wave
vector qm. At 10 kbar of pressure however, a sudden change in the magnetic
structure occurs. Although the magnetic transition temperature remains the
same, qm increases from (0.5, 0.5, 0.298) to (0.5, 0.5, 0.396). This change in
the magnetic modulation may be the outcome of a change in the electronic

Different Transport Pathways of Individual Precursor Proteins in Mitochondria
Transport of mitochondrial precursor proteins into mitochondria of Neurospora crassa was studied in a cellfree reconstituted system. Precursors were synthesized in a reticulocyte lysate programmed with Neurospora mRNA and transported into isolated mitochondria in the absence of protein synthesis. Uptake of the following precursors was investigated: apocytochrome c, ADP/ATP carrier and subunit 9 of the oligomycin-sensitive ATPase.
Addition of high concentrations of unlabelled chemically prepared apocytochrome c (1–10 μM) inhibited the appearance in the mitochondrial of labelled cytochrome c synthesized in vitro because the unlabelled protein dilutes the labelled one and because the translocation system has a limited capacity [apparent V is 1–3 pmol × min−1× (mg mitochondrial protein)−1]. Concentrations of added apocytochrome c exceeding the concentrations of precursor proteins synthesized in vitro by a factor of about 104 did not inhibit the transfer of ADP/ATP carrier or ATPase subunit 9 into mitochondria. Carbonylcyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone, an uncoupler of oxidative phosphorylation, inhibited transfer in vitro of ADP/ATP carrier and of ATPase subunit 9, but not of cytochrome c.
These findings suggest that cytochrome c and the other two proteins have different import pathways into mitochondria. It can be inferred from the data presented that different 'receptors' on the mitochondrial surface mediate the specific recognition of precursor proteins by mitochondria as a first step in the transport process
Recognizing Members of the Tournament Equilibrium Set is NP-hard
A recurring theme in the mathematical social sciences is how to select the
"most desirable" elements given a binary dominance relation on a set of
alternatives. Schwartz's tournament equilibrium set (TEQ) ranks among the most
intriguing, but also among the most enigmatic, tournament solutions that have
been proposed so far in this context. Due to its unwieldy recursive definition,
little is known about TEQ. In particular, its monotonicity remains an open
problem up to date. Yet, if TEQ were to satisfy monotonicity, it would be a
very attractive tournament solution concept refining both the Banks set and
Dutta's minimal covering set. We show that the problem of deciding whether a
