    The surgical approach of late-onset tracheoesophageal fistula in a tracheostomized COVID-19 patient

    In the COVID-19 era the tracheal complications due to prolonged mechanical ventilation have significantly increased. Acquired tracheoesophageal fistula is one of those in ventilated COVID-19 patients. Thus, the knowledge of their management in such fragile patient is crucial. We report a case of tracheoesophageal fistula in a 56-year-old female under prolonged mechanical ventilation for COVID-19 bilateral pneumonia and discuss its management. A surgical approach was proposed. By a collar-shaped transverse cervicotomic access, we transected the trachea at level of fistula en-bloc with the tracheostoma. The esophageal lesion was longitudinally repaired in two-layers. Protective left strap muscle was sandwiched between esophagus and trachea. The tracheal end-to-end anastomosis was completed without a re-tracheostoma. Even if surgical approach of tracheoesophageal fistula in COVID-19 patients has not been tested before, surgery remains the treatment of choice according to the multidisciplinary board

    Exploring changes in children’s well-being due to COVID-19 restrictions: the Italian EpaS-ISS study

    BackgroundWhile existing research has explored changes in health behaviours among adults and adolescents due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the impact of quarantine on young children's well-being is still less clear. Moreover, most of the published studies were carried out on small and non-representative samples. The aim of the EpaS-ISS study was to describe the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the habits and behaviours of a representative sample of school children aged mainly 8-9 years and their families living in Italy, exploring the changes in children's well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to the immediately preceding time period.MethodsData were collected using a web questionnaire. The target population was parents of children attending third-grade primary schools and living in Italy. A cluster sample design was adopted. A Well-Being Score (WBS) was calculated by summing the scores from 10 items concerning the children's well-being. Associations between WBS and socio-demographic variables and other variables were analysed.ResultsA total of 4863 families participated. The children's WBS decreased during COVID-19 (median value from 31 to 25; p = 0.000). The most statistically significant variables related to a worsening children's WBS were: time of school closure, female gender, living in a house with only a small and unliveable outdoor area, high parents' educational level and worsening financial situation.ConclusionsAccording to parents ' perception, changes in daily routine during COVID-19 negatively affected children's well-being. This study has identified some personal and contextual variables associated with the worsening of children's WBS, which should be considered in case of similar events

    Acromegaly at diagnosis in 3173 patients from the Liège Acromegaly Survey (LAS) Database

    Acromegaly is a rare disorder caused by chronic growth hormone (GH) hypersecretion. While diagnostic and therapeutic methods have advanced, little information exists on trends in acromegaly characteristics over time. The Liège Acromegaly Survey (LAS) Database, a relational database, is designed to assess the profile of acromegaly patients at diagnosis and during long-term follow-up at multiple treatment centers. The following results were obtained at diagnosis. The study population consisted of 3173 acromegaly patients from ten countries; 54.5% were female. Males were significantly younger at diagnosis than females (43.5 vs 46.4 years; P 3100 patients is the largest international acromegaly database and shows clinically relevant trends in the characteristics of acromegaly at diagnosis

    Data Collection in Wireless Sensor Networks for Noise Pollution Monitoring

    Focusing on the assessment of environmental noise pollution in urban areas, we provide qualitative considerations and experimental results to show the feasibility of wireless sensor networks to be used in this context. To select the most suitable data collection protocol for the specific noise monitoring application scenario, we evaluated the energy consumption performances of the CTP (Collection Tree Protocol) and DMAC protocols. Our results show that CTP, if used enabling the LPL (Low Power Listening) option, provides the better performances trade-off for noise monitoring applications

    Thermo-responsive properties of methylcellulose hydrogels for cell sheet engineering

    Methylcellulose (MC) hydrogels change their affinity to water depending on their temperature and can thus be used as substrates for cell sheet engineering. In this work, we characterize the thermo-responsive properties of 8% w/v MC hydrogels, produced in two saline solutions (i.e., Na2SO4 and phosphate buffered saline) at different concentrations, by investigating the rheological properties and the UV-absorbance in function of temperature. Both rheological and UV-spectroscopy tests showed that the addition of salts to MC hydrogels allowed lowering the LCST of the MC hydrogel; moreover, hydrogels produced in 0.1 M Na2SO4 or PBS 20 g/L were proved to be particularly promising for cell sheet engineering application, showing a LCST below 37 degrees C
