Evaluation of the AASHTO Empirical and Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Procedures Using the AASHO Road Test
The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials
(AASHTO) adopted the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) in 2008 and state agencies are now transitioning from the classical empirical procedures derived from the American Association of State Highway Officials (AASHO) Road Test. This thesis focuses on the practical implications of this transition: specifically, the changes to required pavement thickness. The AASHO Road Test pavement distress
histories are compared against the MEPDG and AASHTO 1993 performance predictions using several performance measures (PSI, IRI, rutting, and cracking). No existing relationships from the literature were found to fit the AASHO Road Test recorded data so new relationships were developed to relate measured PSI to MEPDG predicted distresses.
The findings, although somewhat inconclusive due to inherent difficulties in modeling the conditions at the Road Test for the MEPDG, suggest that the MEPDG predicts thinner pavement sections at higher traffic levels
Horizontality and Housing Rights Protection against Private Evictions from a European and South African Perspective
In the recent decision of fjm v. the United Kingdom, the ECtHR made a decision on the required protection against private evictions that threatens to water-down the protection of housing rights offered by the echr. This article sets out to determine the effect of the fjm judgment on the protection provided by Article 8, especially in matters concerning private evictions. The analysis of the case includes a discussion on whether the decision of the ECtHR was correct, considering both its previous decisions, as well as the sa Constitutional Court’s findings in similar matters. It analyses the recent European and South African case law with the help of a number of concepts developed in legal theory. These concepts concern vertical and horizontal relations between actors involved in housing law cases, as well as direct and indirect effect of human and constitutional rights

Research series (Chicora Foundation) 59
This study reports on a survey of Civil War fortifications in Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Hampton, and Jasper counties, South Carolina. The research has resulted in the identification of 161 resources, several of which were combined, resulting in a total of 154 sites
Students' Errors Using Geographically Variable Data to Support Scientific Predictions
There is a growing need for students to be able to interpret and analyze large-scale
datasets. Students have shown difficulty in interpreting large-scale climatic datasets,
though it has been unclear in which tasks the students’ difficulty manifests. This study
looks at the types of errors made by eighth grade students in the interpretation and
analysis of geographically variable average temperature and precipitation data. Four
categories of errors – content errors, data practices errors, scientific practices errors, and
directions errors – were identified and described. These characterizations of students’
errors can be used to develop materials that scaffolds their abilities in these areas.Master of ScienceNatural Resources and EnvironmentUniversity of Michiganhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/90921/1/SFICK_NRE_THESIS_2012.pd

The 2010 purchase of Orton and Kendal plantations by Louis Moore Bacon under the name of Orton Plantation Holding, LLC brought many changes. While previously Orton had been managed as public gardens, the property would in the future be a private residence. The management of the property would focus on environmental stewardship. The long leaf pine forests, previously converted to more quickly growing pines were thinned and long leaf pines were re-established. The rice fields, previously converted to wildlife management ponds, were repaired in anticipation of once again growing rice

This study reports on an intensive cultural resources survey of a 672 acre trod in the southwest portion of Berkeley County, near the town of Goose Creek, South Carolina. The work, conducted for Walt Martin of Centex Homes, is meant to assist the association in complying with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Ad and the regulations codified in 36CFR800
