Public leadership challenges in a complex context
The objectives of this study are to identify the importance of teleworking during the COVID-19 pandemic and, evaluate the future development of this working form, characterize the process, identify its benefits and challenges, and present some solutions to deal with telework. To this end, the following research questions were formulated: (1) What areas of telework had the most significant impact during the COVID-19 pandemic? (2) What is the impact of telework on productivity? (3) What are the positive and negative aspects of teleworking? (4) What solutions do leaders propose for telework to intensify in the future? The sample for this study consists of 159 participants holding managerial positions. The data analyses were completed and allowed us to study the challenges of leadership in teleworking in direct public administrations. The results indicate that productivity is maintained, although productivity has decreased in the education sector. The positive aspects found were flexibility, better time management, that communication became simpler, and greater motivation. As negative aspects, we found changes in leadership, communication, and lack of material. To minimise the negative aspects of teleworking, the leaders essentially mentioned mixed-work (face-to-face and teleworking), distribution of appropriate material, training, teleworking regulation, and productivity control.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Extreme compass and Dynamic Multi-Armed Bandits for Adaptive Operator Selection
The goal of adaptive operator selection is the on-line control of the choice of variation operators within evolutionary algorithms. The control process is based on two main components, the credit assignment, that defines the reward that will be used to evaluate the quality of an operator after it has been applied, and the operator selection mechanism, that selects one operator based on some operators qualities. Two previously developed adaptive operator selection methods are combined here: Compass evaluates the performance of operators by considering not only the fitness improvements from parent to offspring, but also the way they modify the diversity of the population, and their execution time; dynamic multi-armed bandit proposes a selection strategy based on the well-known UCB algorithm, achieving a compromise between exploitation and exploration, while nevertheless quickly adapting to changes. Tests with the proposed method, called ExCoDyMAB, are carried out using several hard instances of the satisfiability problem (SAT). Results show the good synergetic effect of combining both approaches
Chronic Enteroviral Meningoencephalitis in a Boy with X-Linked Agammaglobulinemia

Addressing health information privacy with a novel cloud-based PHR system architecture
Patient Health Records (PHRs) shift the ownership of health data from health providers to patients. Such a shift poses important challenges from the data privacy point of view. Patients would like to be able to selectively reveal information to other stakeholders and, at the same time, be assured that their health information will not be used improperly once shared. Current PHR systems partially fail to satisfy these requirements. In this paper, we show that both requirements can be satisfied fully when adopting a novel cloud-based PHR system architecture. We expain the role of remote virtual machines in this architecture and use interaction models to reason about privacy implications. Finally, we evaluate MyPHRMachines, a prototypical implementation of the architecture: we demonstrate that the system enables the execution of third party genome analysis services on patientowned genome data while ensuring that (1) such services cannot maliciously store this data and (2) patients can show the analysis results to experts without sharing along their full genome
The evaluation of ecological status in a Large Portuguese River using Macroinvertebrates Assemblages
great variety of taxonomic and functional feeding groups, which provides them advantages as indicators of the ecological status of aquatic ecosystems. The implementation of the Water Framework Directive in Europe led to an extensive use of biomonitoring programs in order to
access the water quality of streams and rivers. Still, the established Portuguese sampling protocol for aquatic macroinvertebrates does not differentiate small wadeable streams and large
nonwadeable rivers. The development of better standardized sampling methods and the
identification of more suitable metrics and indexes are extremely important to obtain an accurate ecological status of rivers. Given the importance of the correct evaluation of ecological status in aquatic ecosystems management, our main objectives are: (1) to identify the vulnerability of the
established sampling protocol and selected metrics to our sampling sites and (2) to present a review of the different studies which have been carried out during the last years in large rivers and that could be applied on further bioassessment programs in Portuguese large rivers, both feasible
and cost effective
Friendships and social acceptance of children with disabilities: the role of classroom quality, individual skills, and ECEC dosage
Positive social experiences with peers are important for children with disabilities attending inclusive early childhood
education (ECE). This study investigated the associations between classroom quality; children’s verbal, social, and Behavioral skills; and the friendships and social acceptance of children with disabilities, while testing the moderating effects of ECE dosage. Eighty-six children with disabilities (63 boys; Mage = 67.53 years, SD = 10.54 years), attending 86 inclusive ECE classrooms from the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon, Portugal, participated in the study. We found no effects of classroom quality on children’s social acceptance and friendships and ECE dosage did not moderate this association. However, ECE dosage moderated the association between children’s individual skills and their social acceptance and friendships. Findings suggest that more time in ECE is not enough to support children’s social acceptance, particularly for children with increased language and behavioral difficulties, who likely require more intensive and individualized interventions to support their peer-related social experiences.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
Social experiences of children with disabilities in inclusive Portuguese preschool settings
Based on peer sociometric reports, we examined how number of friendships, social acceptance, and characteristics of social networks vary as a function of disability profile. We also investigated teachers' awareness of the sociometric status of young children with disabilities. Participants were 86 children with disabilities (63 boys) enrolled in inclusive preschool classrooms of the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon, Portugal (M-age = 67.33 months, SD = 10.54). Findings suggest that children with severe or sociobehavioral disabilities may be at increased risk of social rejection and isolation, having fewer friends and lower social network centrality than children with mild disabilities. Low agreement between teachers' classifications of the social status of children with disabilities and classifications based on peer nominations raises concerns about their awareness of processes of social rejection and neglect. Findings highlight the need for interventions to support positive social experiences at the dyadic and group levels in Portuguese inclusive preschool classrooms.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
