    Surveys conducted in 1947 indicated that the number of students participating in collegiate forensics had returned to prewar levels, and reports on the 1947-1948 season marked a new high in both interest and activity. In the midst of this upsurge, we may inquire as to what forensics are doing for and to the student, and ultimately for society. As we find ourselves in a season of squad meetings, practice sessions, tournaments, and post-tournament lamentations, it may be well to inquire if our forensic programs are developing students who want to make democracy work as well as enjoy its blessings

    Paper vs. practice: How legal and ethical frameworks influence public sector data professionals in the Netherlands

    Recent years have seen a massive growth in ethical and legal frameworks to govern data science practices. Yet one of the core questions associated with ethical and legal frameworks is the extent to which they are implemented in practice. A particularly interesting case in this context comes to public officials, for whom higher standards typically exist. We are thus trying to understand how ethical and legal frameworks influence the everyday practices on data and algorithms of public sector data professionals. The following paper looks at two cases: public sector data professionals (1) at municipalities in the Netherlands and (2) at the Netherlands Police. We compare these two cases based on an analytical research framework we develop in this article to help understanding of everyday professional practices. We conclude that there is a wide gap between legal and ethical governance rules and the everyday practices

    Land use change and the impact on greenhouse gas exchange in north Australian savanna soils

    Savanna ecosystems are subjected to accelerating land use change as human demand for food and forest products increases. Land use change has been shown to both increase and decrease greenhouse gas fluxes from savannas and considerable uncertainty exists about the non-CO<sub>2</sub> fluxes from the soil. We measured methane (CH<sub>4</sub>), nitrous oxide (N<sub>2</sub>O) and carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2</sub>) over a complete wet-dry seasonal cycle at three replicate sites of each of three land uses: savanna, young pasture and old pasture (converted from savanna 5–7 and 25–30 yr ago, respectively) in the Douglas Daly region of Northern Australia. The effect of break of season rains at the end of the dry season was investigated with two irrigation experiments. Land use change from savanna to pasture increased net greenhouse gas fluxes from the soil. Pasture sites were a weaker sink for CH<sub>4</sub> than savanna sites and, under wet conditions, old pastures turned from being sinks to a significant source of CH<sub>4</sub>. Nitrous oxide emissions were generally very low, in the range of 0 to 5 μg N<sub>2</sub>O-N m<sup>−2</sup> h<sup>−1</sup>, and under dry conditions soil uptake of N<sub>2</sub>O was apparent. Break of season rains produced a small, short lived pulse of N<sub>2</sub>O up to 20 μg N<sub>2</sub>O-N m<sup>−2</sup> h<sup>−1</sup>, most evident in pasture soil. Annual cumulative soil CO<sub>2</sub> fluxes increased after clearing, with savanna (14.6 t CO<sub>2</sub>-C ha<sup>−1</sup> yr<sup>−1</sup>) having the lowest fluxes compared to old pasture (18.5 t CO<sub>2</sub>-C ha<sup>−1</sup> yr<sup>−1</sup>) and young pasture (20.0 t CO<sub>2</sub>-C ha<sup>−1</sup> yr<sup>−1</sup>). Clearing savanna increased soil-based greenhouse gas emissions from 53 to &sim; 70 t CO<sub>2</sub>-equivalents, a 30% increase dominated by an increase in soil CO<sub>2</sub> emissions and shift from soil CH<sub>4</sub> sink to source. Seasonal variation was clearly driven by soil water content, supporting the emerging view that soil water content is a more important driver of soil gas fluxes than soil temperature in tropical ecosystems where temperature varies little among seasons

    The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio is associated with mortality in the general population: The Rotterdam Study

    Inflammation is a risk factor for morbidity and mortality in the elderly. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a marker of systemic inflammation that integrates the information of the leukocyte differentials into one variable. We aimed to assess whether the NLR is a risk indicator for overall and cause-specific mortality in the general population. We analyzed data (2002–2014) from the Rotterdam Study, a long-standing, population-based, prospective cohort study in a community-dwelling ageing population. The association between the NLR and time to all-cause mortality was assessed with Cox proportional hazard models. We additionally assessed cardiovascular, cancer and other mortality. The multivariable analyses were adjusted for age, gender, socio-economic status (SES), smoking status, body mass index, type 2 diabetes, and history of cancer and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Data of 8715 individuals were included. The mean age was 65.9 years (SD 10.5) and the majority were women (57.1%). The NLR was higher in men, higher age categories, smokers and among individuals with lower SES, prevalent diabetes, or a history of cancer or CVD.     Fire in Australian savannas: From leaf to landscape

Savanna ecosystems comprise 22% of the global terrestrial surface and 25% of Australia (almost 1.9 million km2) and provide significant ecosystem services through carbon and water cycles and the maintenance of biodiversity. The current structure, composition and distribution of Australian savannas have coevolved with fire, yet remain driven by the dynamic constraints of their bioclimatic niche. Fire in Australian savannas influences both the biophysical and biogeochemical processes at multiple scales from leaf to landscape. Here, we present the latest emission estimates from Australian savanna biomass burning and their contribution to global greenhouse gas budgets. We then review our understanding of the impacts of fire on ecosystem function and local surface water and heat balances, which in turn influence regional climate. We show how savanna fires are coupled to the global climate through the carbon cycle and fire regimes. We present new research that climate change is likely to alter the structure and function of savannas through shifts in moisture availability and increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide, in turn altering fire regimes with further feedbacks to climate. We explore opportunities to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions from savanna ecosystems through changes in savanna fire management

    Mass Spectrometric Analyses of Organophosphate Insecticide Oxon Protein Adducts

    OBJECTIVE: Organophosphate (OP) insecticides continue to be used to control insect pests. Acute and chronic exposures to OP insecticides have been documented-to cause adverse health effects, but few OP-adducted proteins have been correlated with these illnesses at the molecular level. Our aim was to review the literature covering the current state of the art in mass spectrometry (MS) used to identify OP protein biomarkers. DATA SOURCES AND EXTRACTION: We identified general and specific research reports related to OP insecticides, OP toxicity, OP structure, and protein MS by searching PubMed and Chemical Abstracts for articles published before December 2008. DATA SYNTHESIS: A number of OP-based insecticides share common structural elements that result in predictable OP-protein adducts. The resultant OP-protein adducts show an increase in molecular mass that can be identified by MS and correlated with the OP agent. Customized OP-containing probes have also been used to tag and identify protein targets that can be identified by MS. CONCLUSIONS: MS is a useful and emerging tool for the identification of proteins that are modified by activated organophosphate insecticides. MS can characterize the structure of the OP adduct and also the specific amino acid residue that forms the key bond with the OP. Each protein that is modified in a unique way by an OP represents a unique molecular biomarker that with further research can lead to new correlations with exposure

    The politics of vibrant matter: consistency, containment and the concrete of Mussolini’s bunker

    This article explores the idea of how vibrancy can be produced. Specifically, the attempt is to investigate the multiplicities of vibrancy by considering one of Mussolini’s bunkers. The author examines the location of the bunker in the EUR (Esposizione Universale Romana) neighbourhood in Rome, the bunker’s materiality, and the context and social meaning of the bunker through a contemporary art exhibition called ‘Confronti’ (Confrontations) that took place in the bunker in 2009. The article argues that while emphasizing matter’s inherent vibrancy may be useful in some cases, there is also merit in further unpacking the ways in which vibrancy is produced. In this example, the concrete bunker expresses vibrancy through the processes involved in the emergent material form, and in the sustained politics and social considerations embedded in valuing tangible urban heritage
