    Scattering of particles by neutron stars: Time-evolutions for axial perturbations

    The excitation of the axial quasi-normal modes of a relativistic star by scattered particles is studied by evolving the time dependent perturbation equations. This work is the first step towards the understanding of more complicated perturbative processes, like the capture or the scattering of particles by rotating stars.     Stochastic Quantization of the Chern-Simons Theory

    We discuss Stochastic Quantization of dd=3 dimensional non-Abelian Chern-Simons theory. We demonstrate that the introduction of an appropriate regulator in the Langevin equation yields a well-defined equilibrium limit, thus leading to the correct propagator. We also analyze the connection between dd=3 Chern-Simons and dd=4 Topological Yang-Mills theories showing the equivalence between the corresponding regularized partition functions. We study the construction of topological invariants and the introduction of a non-trivial kernel as an alternative regularization.Comment: 30 page

    Low-speed preconditioning for strongly coupled integration of Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations and two-equation turbulence models

    Computational fluid dynamics codes using the density-based compressible flow formulation of the Navier–Stokes equations have proven to be very successful for the analysis of high-speed flows. However, solution accuracy degradation and, for explicit solvers, reduction of the residual convergence rates occur as the local Mach number decreases below the threshold of 0.1. This performance impairment worsens remarkably in the presence of flow reversals at wall boundaries and unbounded high-vorticity flow regions. These issues can be resolved using low-speed preconditioning, but there exists an outstanding problem regarding the use of this technology in the strongly coupled integration of the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations and two-equation turbulence models, such as the k − ω shear stress transport model. It is not possible to precondition only the RANS equations without altering parts of the governing equations, and there did not exist an approach for preconditioning both the RANS and the SST equations. This study solves this problem by introducing a turbulent low-speed preconditioner of the RANS and SST equations that does not require any alteration of the governing equations. The approach has recently been shown to significantly improve convergence rates in the case of a one-equation turbulence model. The study focuses on the explicit multigrid integration of the governing equations, but most algorithms are applicable also to implicit integration methods. The paper provides all algorithms required for implementing the presented turbulent preconditioner in other computational fluid dynamics codes. The new method is applicable to all low- and mixed-speed aeronautical and propulsion flow problems, and is demonstrated by analyzing the flow field of a Darrieus wind turbine rotor section at two operating conditions, one of which is characterized by significant blade/vortex interaction. Verification and further validation of the new method is also based on the comparison of the results obtained with the developed density-based code and those obtained with a commercial pressure-based code

    The trans-activation domain of the sporulation response regulator Spo0A revealed by X-ray crystallography

    Sporulation in Bacillus involves the induction of scores of genes in a temporally and spatially co-ordinated programme of cell development. Its initiation is under the control of an expanded two-component signal transduction system termed a phosphorelay. The master control element in the decision to sporulate is the response regulator, Spo0A, which comprises a receiver or phosphoacceptor domain and an effector or transcription activation domain. The receiver domain of Spo0A shares sequence similarity with numerous response regulators, and its structure has been determined in phosphorylated and unphosphorylated forms. However, the effector domain (C-Spo0A) has no detectable sequence similarity to any other protein, and this lack of structural information is an obstacle to understanding how DNA binding and transcription activation are controlled by phosphorylation in Spo0A. Here, we report the crystal structure of C-Spo0A from Bacillus stearothermophilus revealing a single alpha -helical domain comprising six alpha -helices in an unprecedented fold. The structure contains a helix-turn-helix as part of a three alpha -helical bundle reminiscent of the catabolite gene activator protein (CAP), suggesting a mechanism for DNA binding. The residues implicated in forming the sigma (A)-activating region clearly cluster in a flexible segment of the polypeptide on the opposite side of the structure from that predicted to interact with DNA.     Olfactory and gustatory function impairment in COVID-19 patients : Italian objective multicenter-study

    Background: Objective data on chemosensitive disorders during COVID-19 are lacking in the Literature. Methods: Multicenter cohort study that involved four Italian hospitals. Three hundred and forty-five COVID-19 patients underwent objective chemosensitive evaluation. Results: Chemosensitive disorders self-reported by 256 patients (74.2%) but the 30.1% of the 89 patients who did not report dysfunctions proved objectively hyposmic. Twenty-five percentage of patients were seen serious long-lasting complaints. All asymptomatic patients had a slight lowering of the olfactory threshold. No significant correlations were found between the presence and severity of chemosensitive disorders and the severity of the clinical course. On the contrary, there is a significant correlation between the duration of the olfactory and gustatory symptoms and the development of severe COVID-19. Conclusions: Patients under-report the frequency of chemosensitive disorders. Contrary to recent reports, such objective testing refutes the proposal that the presence of olfactory and gustatory dysfunction may predict a milder course, but instead suggests that those with more severe disease neglect such symptoms in the setting of severe respiratory disease

    Incomplete echocardiographic recovery at 6\ua0months predicts long-term sequelae after intermediate-risk pulmonary embolism. A post-hoc analysis of the Pulmonary Embolism Thrombolysis (PEITHO) trial

    Introduction: Symptoms and functional limitation are frequently reported by survivors of acute pulmonary embolism (PE). However, current guidelines provide no specific recommendations on which patients should be followed after acute PE, when follow-up should be performed, and which tests it should include. Definition and classification of late PE sequelae are evolving, and their predictors remain to be determined. Methods: In a post hoc analysis of the Pulmonary Embolism Thrombolysis (PEITHO) trial, we focused on 219 survivors of acute intermediate-risk PE with clinical and echocardiographic follow-up 6 months after randomisation as well as over the long term (median, 3 years after acute PE). The primary outcome was a composite of (1) confirmed chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) or (2) \u2018post-PE impairment\u2019 (PPEI), defined by echocardiographic findings indicating an intermediate or high probability of pulmonary hypertension along with New York Heart Association functional class II\u2013IV. Results: Confirmed CTEPH or PPEI occurred in 29 (13.2%) patients, (6 with CTEPH and 23 with PPEI). A history of chronic heart failure at baseline and incomplete or absent recovery of echocardiographic parameters at 6 months predicted CTEPH or PPEI at long-term follow-up. Conclusions: CTEPH or PPEI occurs in almost one out of seven patients after acute intermediate-risk PE. Six-month echocardiographic follow-up may be useful for timely detection of late sequelae

    The PYTHIA program can be used to generate high-energy-physics `events', i.e. sets of outgoing particles produced in the interactions between two incoming particles. The objective is to provide as accurate as possible a representation of event properties in a wide range of reactions, within and beyond the Standard Model, with emphasis on those where strong interactions play a role, directly or indirectly, and therefore multihadronic final states are produced. The physics is then not understood well enough to give an exact description; instead the program has to be based on a combination of analytical results and various QCD-based models. This physics input is summarized here, for areas such as hard subprocesses, initial- and final-state parton showers, underlying events and beam remnants, fragmentation and decays, and much more. Furthermore, extensive information is provided on all program elements: subroutines and functions, switches and parameters, and particle and process data.     BESII Detector Simulation

    A Monte Carlo program based on Geant3 has been developed for BESII detector simulation. The organization of the program is outlined, and the digitization procedure for simulating the response of various sub-detectors is described.
