This work analyzes the determinants of the banking interest rate margin in Brazil from 2001 to 2004. Based on the Ho and Saunders' (1981) theoretical model, we verify the impacts of risk factors - interest-rate risk and default risk - and administrative costs over the banking interest rate margin charged. We used panel data to the bank-level variables and we applied the methodology proposed by Chamberlain (1982) for models with non-observed individual characteristics. The main conclusions are: (i) default risk, interest-rate risk and administrative costs have positive effects over the interest rate margin; (ii) beside this factors, there are other characteristics that have a significant impact over the interest rate margin, e.g. the liquidity level of the bank, the market-share and the banking services revenues; and (iii) the Chamberlain's methodology shows considerable efficiency gains relative to the 'fixed-effects' estimation in this sample.

Supply chain management, postponement and demand management are one of the operations of strategic importance for the economic success of organizations, in times of economic crisis or not. The objective of this article is to analyze the influence that a mathematical model focused on the management of raw material stocks in a microenterprise with seasonal demand. The research method adopted was of an applied nature, with a quantitative approach and with an exploratory and descriptive objective. The technical procedures adopted were the bibliographical survey, documentary analysis and mathematical modeling. The development of mathematical models for solving inventory management problems may allow managers to observe deviations in trading methods, as well as to support rapid decisions for possible unforeseen market or economic variability

The supply chain management, postponement and demand management functions are of strategic importance to the economic success of organizations because they influence the production process, when viewed in isolation and empirically may hinder understanding of their behavior. The aim of this paper is to analyze the influence of the postponement in an enterprise production system with make-to-stock and with seasonal demand. The research method used was a case study, the instruments of data collection were semi-structured interviews, documentary analysis and site visits. This research is restricted to analysis of the influence that different levels of delay and the company's position in the supply chain have on the practice of demand management in the productive segment graphic, product spiral notebook and also in relation to geographical focus (region of the state São Paulo), in which it will seek to interview the managers and directors. As a way to support the research on the analysis of case study and the final considerations will be discussed the following issues: supply chain management, postponement, demand management and production system make-to-stock. The demand management can be understood as a practice that allows you to manage and coordinate the supply chain in reverse, i.e. the consumer to the supplier, in which consumers trigger actions for the supply of products can make the process more efficient. The purpose of managing the supply chain is able to allow the addition of value, exceeding the expectations of consumers, it is necessary to develop a relationship with suppliers and customers win-win. The postponement strategy must fit the characteristics of the turbulent environment within the markets along with demands that require variety of customized products and services and reasonable costs, aiming to support decision making. The postponement of time can be a way to soften the increase in inventory of finished product in the company, which may have a high value, being necessary to reduce the lead time and also suppliers to change their production strategy of make- to-stock to make-to-order. The production system make-to-stock shows enough interest to organizations that are operating in markets with high demand variability, i.e. variations in seasonal as a way of trying to protect their production and be more responsive to market needs

Selective transfer in the acquisition of english double object constrctions by brazilian learners

The present study investigates the acquisition of the English double object constructions (GOLDBERG, 1995) by Brazilian learners. We hypothesize that, due to first language (L1) influences, the prepositional ditransitive construction (John gave a book to Mary) will be acquired earlier, while the ditransitive construction (John gave Mary a book) will be part of the learner’s interlanguages (SELINKER, 1972) only at the advanced level of proficiency. We also hypothesize that learners may transfer (ODLIN, 1989) the placement of the object pronoun in pre-verbal position from their L1 to their interlanguage in early stages of acquisition (João me deu um livro / *John me gave a book). We test our hypotheses by comparing the performance of three groups of learners (beginning, intermediate, and advanced) and native speakers of English on an acceptability judgment task used as a measure of learnability and generalization. Results confirm the order of acquisition of the English double object constructions predicted for native speakers of Brazilian Portuguese. Moreover, results suggest that, although mother tongue influences may have taken place, they do not do so pervasively, but rather selectively, corroborating the proposal by Kellerman (1983)

Gestores do esporte e visões de política esportiva no Brasil (1937-2016): uma abordagem sociológica

    Get PDF

Objective: The main goal was to evaluate the effectiveness of early palliative care in patients with advanced cancer. Methods: The search in the MEDLINE/PubMed, CRD, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, EMBASE, Google Scholar, ICTRP and ClinicalTrials.gov databases was conducted in June 2017. Two reviewers independently screened titles and abstracts with consensus agreement. We undertook quality assessment according to GRADE criteria. Randomized Controlled Trials (RCT) that assessed the effectiveness of EPC in adult patients with a diagnosis- advanced cancer were included. The quantitative evidence was summarized in a meta-analysis using random effect models. Results: The selection phase retrieved 14,026 records, 7 papers were included in the meta-analysis. The standardized mean difference the outcomes assessed were: improvement quality of life (0.17 higher; 95% CI; 0.05, 0.29) after 3 months, (0.42 higher; 95% CI; 0.21, 0.63) after 6 months, and (0.16 higher; 95% CI; -0.20, 0.53) after 12 months; improvement of symptom intensity (-0.13 lower; 95% CI; -0.26, 0.00) after 3 months, (-0.27 lower; 95% CI; -0.53, -0.01) after 6 months, and (-0.39 lower; 95% CI; -0.76, -0.03) after 12 months; improve depressive mood (-0.19 lower; 95% CI; - 0.36, -0.01) after 3 months, (-0.21 lower; 95% CI; -0.45, 0.04) after 6 months, and (-0.09 lower; 95% CI; -0.81, 0.63) after 12 months; and survival (OR = 0.71 higher; 95% CI; 0.51, 0.99). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that EPC effectively improves quality of life and consequently increases the likelihood of survival of patients with advanced or metastatic cancer. However, due to worsening of the disease stage over time, a limited effect was observed after 12 months of follow-up

    Get PDF
This chapter describes the usefulness of surgical technologies such as intraoperative MRI, 5-ALA fluorescence-guided surgery, and neuronavigation as tools to make brain tumor resections safer and more effective. The focuses are practical aspects and the relevant literature regarding the impact of their use in avoidance of complications, improvement in survival rates, and some tips and tricks acquired in the experience of our department. All three strategies have an important role in neuro-oncological surgery. The future probably will prove that the combination of these tools, selected case by case, is the best way to achieve the best results regarding safety and effectiveness

Lean and the circular economy: A systematic literature review

    Get PDF
Lean is a well-renowned strategy for increasing the value of products by minimizing waste. The circular economy is a new paradigm designed to mitigate environmental problems in production activities. Considering both perspectives, this article aims to understand how the application of lean can support the achievement of the circular economy. In order to attain this goal, the research presents a systematic literature review using the Scopus and Web of Science databases. Notably, the literature on the theme is still at an exploratory stage, the vast majority of research consisting of case studies. The main lean tools identified in the research are 5S and value stream mapping. The main circular practices, with lean support, are the Rs and ecodesign. The research proposes Circular Lean as a novel concept, one which merges some of the existing lean and circular economy principles. The main idea of this concept is the reutilization of material and energy, adding value and reducing waste within production processes and product life cycles

Semiconducting to metallic transition in CX(BN)Y nanotubes: effects of C stripes in BN basis

In this work, we study the structural and electronic properties of CX(BN)Y nanotubes, varying the CX concentration in the BN base structure. The developed work was done combining semiempirical, density functional theory (DFT) and Green’s function calculation methods. In the first part, we shown by structure energies that the distribution of B − C, C − N, C − C, and B − C chemical bonds greatly influence the structural stabilization of the nanotubes and the integration of the carbo (C) atoms within the CX(BN)Y systems has a strong dependence on the atomic distribution of B, C, and N atoms. In the second part, we shown that atomic distribution of B, C, and N atomos has also a strong impact on the electronic band gap, transforming the electronic structure of initial BN electronic configurations

This article summarizes aspects of the process of disciplining physical education (PE) in the United States, to provide elements for thinking about relationships between science and education in markedly reflexive parameters. In this way, we seek to restore some of the founding elements of the disciplinary movement of North American PE, as well as to identify its contributions and limits to the structuring of the area as a scientific field. In methodological terms, the study was configured as theoretical-bibliographic and exploratory. Based on this design, articles and book chapters from national and international literature concerning the epistemological debate on PE were initially mobilized and, later, the information was analyzed based on Pierre Bourdieu’s theoretical framework. In conclusion, it is emphasized that the disciplinary movement in North American PE has brought significant advances and contributions to place PE in the hierarchy of science and, at the same time, justify its existence in higher education. However, despite these productive aspects, the PE disciplinary movement could not contain the side effects of the proposed organizational dynamics, especially concerning the fragmentation of PE in different subareas that not only communicate little but also compete for the definition in the field. In any case, the disciplinary movement, recognizing in human movement the common connector of the different research fronts in the area, not only induced but made credible the process of organizing PE as an autonomous science
