The preparation and characterisation of rhodium(III) and Iridium(III) half sandwich complexes with napthalene-1,8-dithiolate, acenaphthene-5,6-dithiolate and biphenyl-2,2âČ-dithiolate
The synthesis of rhodium(III) and iridium (III) half sandwich complexes [Cp*M(PEt3) (S-R-S)], M = Rh, Ir; S-R-S = naphthalene-1,8-dithiolate (NaphthS2, a), acenaphthene-5,6-dithiolate (AcenapS2, b) and biphenyl-2,2âČ-dithiolate (BiphenS2, c) is reported. We also describe the isolation of a new compound acenaphthene-1,8-dithiol. All complexes have been fully characterised using multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The ligands naphthalene-1,8-dithiol (H2a), acenaphthene-1,8-dithiol (H2b), 1,1âČ-biphenyl-2,2âČ-dithiol (H2c) and benzene-1,2-dithiol (H2d) have also been characterised by single crystal X-ray diffraction.PostprintPeer reviewe
The spinorial geometry of supersymmetric heterotic string backgrounds
We determine the geometry of supersymmetric heterotic string backgrounds for
which all parallel spinors with respect to the connection with
torsion , the NSNS three-form field strength, are Killing. We find
that there are two classes of such backgrounds, the null and the timelike. The
Killing spinors of the null backgrounds have stability subgroups
K\ltimes\bR^8 in , for , SU(4), , and , and the Killing spinors of the timelike backgrounds have
stability subgroups , SU(3), SU(2) and . The former admit a single
null -parallel vector field while the latter admit a timelike and
two, three, five and nine spacelike -parallel vector fields,
respectively. The spacetime of the null backgrounds is a Lorentzian
two-parameter family of Riemannian manifolds with skew-symmetric torsion.
If the rotation of the null vector field vanishes, the holonomy of the
connection with torsion of is contained in . The spacetime of time-like
backgrounds is a principal bundle with fibre a Lorentzian Lie group and
base space a suitable Riemannian manifold with skew-symmetric torsion. The
principal bundle is equipped with a connection which determines the
non-horizontal part of the spacetime metric and of . The curvature of
takes values in an appropriate Lie algebra constructed from that of
. In addition has only horizontal components and contains the
Pontrjagin class of . We have computed in all cases the Killing spinor
bilinears, expressed the fluxes in terms of the geometry and determine the
field equations that are implied by the Killing spinor equations.Comment: 73pp. v2: minor change
The Relativistic Factor in the Orbital Dynamics of Point Masses
There is a growing population of relativistically relevant minor bodies in
the Solar System and a growing population of massive extrasolar planets with
orbits very close to the central star where relativistic effects should have
some signature. Our purpose is to review how general relativity affects the
orbital dynamics of the planetary systems and to define a suitable relativistic
correction for Solar System orbital studies when only point masses are
considered. Using relativistic formulae for the N body problem suited for a
planetary system given in the literature we present a series of numerical
orbital integrations designed to test the relevance of the effects due to the
general theory of relativity in the case of our Solar System. Comparison
between different algorithms for accounting for the relativistic corrections
are performed. Relativistic effects generated by the Sun or by the central star
are the most relevant ones and produce evident modifications in the secular
dynamics of the inner Solar System. The Kozai mechanism, for example, is
modified due to the relativistic effects on the argument of the perihelion.
Relativistic effects generated by planets instead are of very low relevance but
detectable in numerical simulations
CaloCube: a novel calorimeter for high-energy cosmic rays in space
In order to extend the direct observation of high-energy cosmic rays up to
the PeV region, highly performing calorimeters with large geometrical
acceptance and high energy resolution are required. Within the constraint of
the total mass of the apparatus, crucial for a space mission, the calorimeters
must be optimized with respect to their geometrical acceptance, granularity and
absorption depth. CaloCube is a homogeneous calorimeter with cubic geometry, to
maximise the acceptance being sensitive to particles from every direction in
space; granularity is obtained by relying on small cubic scintillating crystals
as active elements. Different scintillating materials have been studied. The
crystal sizes and spacing among them have been optimized with respect to the
energy resolution. A prototype, based on CsI(Tl) cubic crystals, has been
constructed and tested with particle beams. Some results of tests with
different beams at CERN are presented.Comment: Seven pages, seven pictures. Proceedings of INSTR17 Novosibirs
Electrooxidation of C-4 polyols on platinum single- crystals: a computational and electrochemical study
Many polyols are abundant and cheap molecules highly spread in the biomass. These molecules have an enormous potential to be used in electrochemical devices to generate energy and/or value-added molecules. The electrooxidation of polyols can produce different substances of interest in the chemical industry concomitantly to high purity hydrogen in electrolyzers. The cost in the production of all these chemicals depends, among other factors, on the develop of more active and selective catalysts. However, in order to search for these materials using computational experiments, it is mandatory to have a better understanding of the fundamental aspect of the reactions, which permit to base the search on the adsorption energies of one or more key reaction intermediates. To contribute to this task, we performed (spectro)-electrochemical and computational experiments to study the electrooxidation of C-4 polyols. We show that the electrooxidation of polyols does not depend on the relative orientation of their OH groups. Besides, using Pt single crystals, we demonstrate that the trend for the oxidation of the primary carbon (relative to the secondary) increases in the order Pt(111) < Pt(100) < Pt(110) and that this result can be extended to polyols with longer carbon chains. Finally, computational experiments permit us to rationalize these trends looking at the relative stability of double dehydrogenated intermediates on the Pt basal planes.Catalysis and Surface Chemistr
The role and importance of gene polymorphisms in the development of atherosclerosis
The development of atherosclerosis is a multifactorial process. The purpose of the study was to examine three genetic polymorphisms playing a role in the metabolic processes underlying the disease. We compared the data of 348 atherosclerotic non-diabetic patients with 260 atherosclerotic diabetic patients and 384 healthy controls. We analyzed the prevalence of myocardial infarction and stroke in three different groups of patients carrying different polymorphisms. It was proved that if the mutant TT eNOS Glu298ASP variant is present, a significantly higher number of myocardial infarctions can be observed than in patients carrying heterozygote GT or normal GG genotype. We proved that in the case of MTHFR 677CT heterozygote variants, the occurrence of myocardial infarction is significantly higher and the difference is also significant in case of the 677TT homozygote variant. It was verified that among patients with the mutant TNF-α AA genotype the occurrence of cardiovascular events was significantly higher. Screening the genetically high risk groups on the long run should be considered as an early detection opportunity that may give better chances for prevention and treatment. Understanding the inflammatory mechanisms of the atherosclerosis may give new therapeutical targets to pharmacologists
HPM Approximations for Trajectories: From a Golf Ball Path to Mercuryâs Orbit
In this work, we propose the approximated analytical solutions for two highly nonlinear problems using the homotopy perturbation method (HPM). We obtained approximations for a golf ball trajectory model and a Mercury orbitâs model. In addition, to enlarge the domain of convergence of the first case study, we apply the Laplace-PadĂ© resummation method to the HPM series solution. For both case studies, we were able to obtain approximations in good agreement with numerical methods, depicting the basic nature of the trajectories of the phenomena
Search for the glueball candidates f0(1500) and fJ(1710) in gamma gamma collisions
Data taken with the ALEPH detector at LEP1 have been used to search for gamma
gamma production of the glueball candidates f0(1500) and fJ(1710) via their
decay to pi+pi-. No signal is observed and upper limits to the product of gamma
gamma width and pi+pi- branching ratio of the f0(1500) and the fJ(1710) have
been measured to be Gamma_(gamma gamma -> f0(1500)). BR(f0(1500)->pi+pi-) <
0.31 keV and Gamma_(gamma gamma -> fJ(1710)). BR(fJ(1710)->pi+pi-) < 0.55 keV
at 95% confidence level.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
