The Two-Dimensional Bose-Einstein Condensate
We study the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov mean-field theory as applied to a
two-dimensional finite trapped Bose gas at low temperatures and find that, in
the Hartree-Fock approximation, the system can be described either with or
without the presence of a condensate; this is true in the thermodynamic limit
as well. Of the two solutions, the one that includes a condensate has a lower
free energy at all temperatures. However, the Hartree-Fock scheme neglects the
presence of phonons within the system, and when we allow for the possibility of
phonons we are unable to find condensed solutions; the uncondensed solutions,
on the other hand, are valid also in the latter, more general scheme. Our
results confirm that low-energy phonons destabilize the two-dimensional
condensate.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, REVTeX 4. To appear in J. Low Temp. Phys.

Aphoristic Compendium. A tribute to Juan Magariños.
Equity premium: Historical, expected, required and implied
Equity premium designates four different concepts: Historical Equity Premium (HEP); Expected Equity Premium (EEP);Required Equity Premium (REP); and Implied Equity Premium (IEP). We highlight the confusing message conveyed in the literature regarding equity premium and its evolution. The confusion arises from not distinguishing among the four concepts and from not recognizing that although the HEP is equal for all investors, the REP, the EEP and the IEP differ for different investors. A unique IEP requires assuming homogeneous expectations for expected growth (g), but we show that there are several pairs (IEP, g) that satisfy current prices. We claim that different investors have different REPs and that it is impossible to determine the REP for the market as a whole, because it does not exist. We also investigate the relationship between (IEP - g) and the risk-free rate. There is a kind of schizophrenic approach to valuation: while all authors admit different expectations of equity cash flows, most authors look for a single discount rate. It seems as if the expectations of equity cash flows are formed in a democratic regime, while the discount rate is determined in a dictatorship.equity premium; equity premium puzzle; required market risk premium; historical market risk premium; expected market risk premium; risk premium; market risk premium; market premium;

Quasilinear eigenvalues
In this work, we review and extend some well known results for the
eigenvalues of the Dirichlet Laplace operator to a more general class of
monotone quasilinear elliptic operators. As an application we obtain some
homogenization results for nonlinear eigenvalues.Comment: 23 pages, Rev. UMA, to appea
Universal decoherence induced by an environmental quantum phase transition
Decoherence induced by coupling a system with an environment may display
universal features. Here we demostrate that when the coupling to the system
drives a quantum phase transition in the environment, the temporal decay of
quantum coherences in the system is Gaussian with a width independent of the
system-environment coupling strength. The existence of this effect opens the
way for a new type of quantum simulation algorithm, where a single qubit is
used to detect a quantum phase transition. We discuss possible implementations
of such algorithm and we relate our results to available data on universal
decoherence in NMR echo experiments
A geodynamic model linking Cretaceous orogeny, arc migration, foreland dynamic subsidence and marine ingression in southern South America
This study synthesizes the tectonomagmatic evolution of the Andes between 35°30âČS to 48°S with the aim to spotlight early contractional phases on Andean orogenic building and to analyze their potential driving processes. We examine early tectonic stages of the different fold-thrust belts that compose this Andean segment. Additionally, we analyzed the spatio-temporal magmatic arc evolution as a proxy of dynamic changes in Andean subduction during critical tectonic stages of orogenic construction. This revision proposes a hypothesis related the existence of a continuous large-scale flat subduction setting in Cretaceous times with a similar size to the present-largest flat-slab setting on earth. This potential process would have initiated diachronically in the late Early Cretaceous and achieved full development in Late Cretaceous to earliest Paleocene times, constructing a series of fold-thrust belts on the retro-arc zone from 35°30âČS to 48°S. Moreover, we assess major paleogeographic changes that took place during flat-slab full development in Maastrichtian-Danian times. At this moment, an enigmatic Atlantic-derived marine flooding covered the Patagonian foreland reaching as far as the Andean foothills. Based on flexural and dynamic topography analyses, we suggest that focused dynamic subsidence at the edge of the flat-slab may explain sudden marine ingression previously linked to continental tilting and orogenic loading during a high sea level global stage. Finally, flat-subduction destabilization could have triggered massive outpouring of synextensional intraplate volcanic rocks in southern South America and the arc retraction in late Paleogene to early Neogene times.Fil: Gianni, Guido Martin.
