    Get PDF
An important element in research on e-Science, which includes research in computational modeling, is the scientific workflow that, in general, is very extensive, comprising many computations, and forward to represent an experimental scientific procedure, generally collaborative. Because it is generally so extensive, a scientific workflow eventually becomes difficult to define. One way to facilitate the process that leads to the representation of a scientific workflow is using tools that make use of semantics to facilitate its composition. In this context, this paper presents a proposal whose main objective is to facilitate the composition of scientific workflows, considering projects in computational modeling, performing semantic search of semantic web services and incorporating these into the definition of the workflows.

    Get PDF
Skin and subcutaneous lesions (nevus, fibromas, lipomas), lacerations, ingrown toenails, abscesses, musculoskeletal disorders such as arthritis, bursitis, trigger points, neuropathies and tendinitis are the main causes of problems in primary care that can be resolved with minor procedures. Performing these procedures is an important part of the general practitioner's competencies. The National Medical Course Curriculum Guidelines in Brazil show that medical students should be aware of these diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, based on current literature. In addition to the financial benefits, performing minor procedures in primary care also reduce patient anxiety, has greater convenience due to the proximity and familiarity with the health facility, requires less waiting for treatment, and allows for complete patient care. This paper is an experience report, with the objective of reporting the teaching-learning process during the internship of Family and Community Medicine of the Faculdades Pequeno Príncipe, regarding the performance of outpatient procedures in the primary health care. During the internship, it was possible to perform small procedures such as skin lesion excision, Intrauterine Device (IUD) insertion and trigger point needling. Thus, it is concluded that the teaching of small procedures is an essential part of the medical curriculum and helps to form a physician who addresses the most common complaints of patients in primary care

    Get PDF
Homeobox genes are regulatory genes encoding nuclear proteins that act as transcription factors, regulating aspects of morphogenesis and cell differentiation during normal embryonic development of several animals. Vertebrate homeobox genes can be divided in two subfamilies: clustered, or HOX genes, and nonclustered, or divergent, homeobox genes. During the last decades, several homeobox genes, clustered and nonclustered ones, were identified in normal tissue, in malignant cells, and in different diseases and metabolic alterations. Homeobox genes are involved in the normal teeth development and in familial teeth agenesis. Normal development and cancer have a great deal in common, as both processes involve shifts between cell proliferation and differentiation. The literature is accumulating evidences that homeobox genes play an important role in oncogenesis. Many cancers exhibit expression of or alteration in homeobox genes. Those include leukemias, colon, skin, prostate, breast and ovarian cancers, among others. This review is aimed at introducing readers to some of the homeobox family functions in normal tissues and especially in cancer.

The heat transfer coefficient (h) is an extremely important variable in the evaluation of convective heat transfer, however, its determination is a great challenge due to the various factors that influence it: fluid viscosity, fluid density, specific heat of the fluid, thermal conductivity of the fluid, coefficient of volumetric expansion, fluid velocity. The objective of this work is the experimental determination of the convective heat transfer coefficient by means of the global capacitance method. Three test bodies, two cylindrical bodies and one spherical body were used. These specimens were individually heated in a stove, and heating was monitored by means of a thermocouple and a data logger. The results showed a good concordance between the values of h obtained experimentally and the literature

The self-perception of health can approach several aspects of physical health, cognition and functional abilities. OBJECTIVE: To compare elderly subjects wit and without evidence of cognitive decline in relation to health self-perception and socio-demographic variables, highlighting the variables associated with positive or negative health self-perception in these groups. METHODS: Ninety eight community-dwelling subjects were assessed in this study. Cognitive and functional abilities were tested using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Clock Drawing Test (CDT), the Blessed Dementia Scale (BDS), and the Informant Questionnaire of Cognitive Decline in the Elderly (IQCODE). Self-perception of health evaluation was performed with the use of an adapted questionnaire of the Brazil Old Age Schedule. RESULTS: Twenty-six subjects (26%) had evidence of cognitive decline in this sample. Negative health self-perception and lower levels of physical and leisure activity were significantly associated with cognitive decline in this sample (p = 0.006, p = 0.05, p = 0.03, respectively). In the group of subjects without evidence of dementia, history of cerebrovascular disease was associated with negative health perception. DISCUSSION: Dementia was associated with worse health self-perception evaluation. In addition, elders with evidence of dementia and good health self-perception evaluation had higher IQCODE scores, suggesting lack of judgment regarding health status.Brasil - CapesFapemigPROE
