Access to Enantiopure 5‑, 7‑, and 5,7-Substituted cis- Decahydroquinolines: Enantioselective Synthesis of (−)-Cermizine B

Get PDF
Stereoconvergent cyclocondensation reactions of (R)- or (S)-phenylglycinol with appropriately substituted cyclohexanone-based δ-keto esters are the key steps of short synthetic routes to enantiopure 5-, 7-, and 5,7-substituted cisdecahydroquinolines. The factors governing the stereoselectivity of the cyclocondensation are discussed. The potential of the methodology is illustrated by a protecting-group-free synthesis of the phlegmarine-type Lycopodium alkaloid (-)-cermizine B

Sleep/wake cycle alterations as a cause of neurodegenerative diseases: a Mendelian randomization study

Sleep and/or wake cycle alterations are common in neurodegenerative diseases (ND). Our aim was to determine whether there is a causal relationship between sleep and/or wake cycle patterns and ND (Parkinson's disease (PD) age at onset (AAO), Alzheimer's disease (AD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)) using two-sample Mendelian Randomization (MR). We selected 12 sleep traits with available Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS) to evaluate their causal relationship with the ND risk through Inverse-Variance Weighted regression as main analysis. We used as outcome the latest ND GWAS with available summary-statistics: PD-AAO (N = 17,996), AD (N = 21,235) and ALS (N = 40,136). MR results pointed to a causal effect of subjective and objective-measured morning chronotype on later PD-AAO (95%CI:0.33-1.81, p = 8.47×10−09 and 95%CI:-7.28 to -4.44, p = 5.87×10−16, respectively). Sleep efficiency was causally associated with a decreased AD risk (95%CI:-20.408 to -0.66, p = 0.04) and daytime sleepiness with an increased ALS risk (95%CI:0.15 to 1.61, p = 0.01). Our study suggests that sleep and/or wake patterns have causal relationship with ND. Given that sleep and/or wake patterns are modifiable risk factors, sleep interventions should be investigated as a potential treatment in PD-AAO, AD and ALS

An accurate understanding of the mechanisms underlying an individual's response to rt-PA treatment is critical to improve stroke patients' management. We thus reviewed the literature in order to identify biochemical and genetic factors that have been associated with safety and efficacy of rt-PA administration after stroke

Radon and material radiopurity assessment for the NEXT double beta decay experiment

The Neutrino Experiment with a Xenon TPC (NEXT), intended to investigate the neutrinoless double beta decay using a high-pressure xenon gas TPC filled with Xe enriched in 136Xe at the Canfranc Underground Laboratory in Spain, requires ultra-low background conditions demanding an exhaustive control of material radiopurity and environmental radon levels. An extensive material screening process is underway for several years based mainly on gamma-ray spectroscopy using ultra-low background germanium detectors in Canfranc but also on mass spectrometry techniques like GDMS and ICPMS. Components from shielding, pressure vessel, electroluminescence and high voltage elements and energy and tracking readout planes have been analyzed, helping in the final design of the experiment and in the construction of the background model. The latest measurements carried out will be presented and the implication on NEXT of their results will be discussed. The commissioning of the NEW detector, as a first step towards NEXT, has started in Canfranc; in-situ measurements of airborne radon levels were taken there to optimize the system for radon mitigation and will be shown too.Comment: Proceedings of the Low Radioactivity Techniques 2015 workshop (LRT2015), Seattle, March 201

Thrombopoietin Receptor Agonists for Severe Thrombocytopenia after Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation : Experience of the Spanish Group of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant

Get PDF
Persistent thrombocytopenia is a common complication after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT). Romiplostim and eltrombopag are the currently available thrombopoietin receptor agonists (TPO-RAs), and some studies with very small numbers of cases have reported their potential efficacy in the allo-SCT setting. The present retrospective study evaluated the safety and efficacy of TPO-RAs in 86 patients with persistent thrombocytopenia after allo-HSCT. Sixteen patients (19%) had isolated thrombocytopenia (PT), and 71 (82%) had secondary failure of platelet recovery (SFPR). TPO-RA therapy was started at a median of 127 days (range, 27 to 1177 days) after allo-SCT. The median initial and maximum administered doses were 50 mg/day (range, 25 to 150 mg/day) and 75 mg/day (range, 25 to 150 mg/day), respectively, for eltrombopag and 1 µg/kg (range, 1 to 7 µg/kg) and 5 µg/kg (range, 1 to 10 µg/kg), respectively, for romiplostin. The median platelet count before initiation of TPO-RA therapy was 14,000/µL (range, 1000 to 57,000/µL). Platelet recovery to ≥50,000/µL without transfusion support was achieved in 72% of patients at a median time of 66 days (range, 2 to 247 days). Eighty-one percent of the patients had a decreased number of megakaryocytes before treatment, showing a slower response to therapy (P =.011). The median duration of treatment was 62 days (range, 7 to 700 days). Grade 3-4 adverse events (hepatic and asthenia) were observed in only 2% of the patients. At last follow-up, 81% of patients had discontinued TPO-RAs and maintained response, and 71% were alive. To our knowledge, this is the largest series analyzing the use of TPO-RAs after allo-SCT reported to date. Our results support the efficacy and safety in this new setting. Further prospective trials are needed to increase the level of evidence and to identify predictors of response

Search for coherent charged pion production in neutrino-carbon interactions

Get PDF
We report the result from a search for charged-current coherent pion production induced by muon neutrinos with a mean energy of 1.3 GeV. The data are collected with a fully active scintillator detector in the K2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. No evidence for coherent pion production is observed and an upper limit of 0.60×1020.60 \times 10^{-2} is set on the cross section ratio of coherent pion production to the total charged-current interaction at 90% confidence level. This is the first experimental limit for coherent charged pion production in the energy region of a few GeV.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Franco’s dictatorial regime was based on principles of authority and patriarchal hierarchy noticeable impact on social relations. The ideological discourse supported by the church was underlying all the public and private activity. The image of women was the same as they had in ancient times, but this time with a turn ideological motivations in pursuing guarantors and legitimacy of the regime through the family. With the support of the Church and the Women’s Section was mythologized female model supported in the trilogy God, Country and Home. Education built the prototype of a woman leaning on the traditional Catholic discourse is perpetuated throughout the dictatorship.

El régimen dictatorial de Franco estaba basado en principios de autoridad y jerarquía patriarcal con notoria incidencia en las relaciones sociales. Evidence for muon neutrino oscillation in an accelerator-based experiment

We present results for muon neutrino oscillation in the KEK to Kamioka (K2K) long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. K2K uses an accelerator-produced muon neutrino beam with a mean energy of 1.3 GeV directed at the Super-Kamiokande detector. We observed the energy dependent disappearance of muon neutrino, which we presume have oscillated to tau neutrino. The probability that we would observe these results if there is no neutrino oscillation is 0.0050% (4.0 sigma).Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

High intensity neutrino oscillation facilities in Europe

Get PDF
The EUROnu project has studied three possible options for future, high intensity neutrino oscillation facilities in Europe. The first is a Super Beam, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of pions created by bombarding targets with a 4 MW proton beam from the CERN High Power Superconducting Proton Linac. The far detector for this facility is the 500 kt MEMPHYS water Cherenkov, located in the Fréjus tunnel. The second facility is the Neutrino Factory, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of μ+ and μ− beams in a storage ring. The far detector in this case is a 100 kt magnetized iron neutrino detector at a baseline of 2000 km. The third option is a Beta Beam, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of beta emitting isotopes, in particular He6 and Ne18, also stored in a ring. The far detector is also the MEMPHYS detector in the Fréjus tunnel. EUROnu has undertaken conceptual designs of these facilities and studied the performance of the detectors. Based on this, it has determined the physics reach of each facility, in particular for the measurement of CP violation in the lepton sector, and estimated the cost of construction. These have demonstrated that the best facility to build is the Neutrino Factory. However, if a powerful proton driver is constructed for another purpose or if the MEMPHYS detector is built for astroparticle physics, the Super Beam also becomes very attractive
