Severity and duration of allergic conjunctivitis: are they associated with severity and duration of allergic rhinitis and asthma?
Comorbiditat al·lèrgica; Conjuntivitis al·lèrgica; Malaltia respiratòria al·lèrgicaAllergic comorbidity; Allergic conjunctivitis; Allergic respiratory diseaseComorbilidad alérgica; Conjuntivitis alérgica; Enfermedad respiratoria alérgicaObjective. The association of allergic conjunctivitis (AC) with rhinitis and/or asthma is poorly understood. The objective of this study was to apply the Consensus Document for Allergic Conjunctivitis (DECA) criteria for the classification of AC to a population of patients with AC to assess the association between the severity and duration of AC and rhinitis and/or asthma. Methods. Patients with ocular symptoms of AC who participated in the 'Alergológica 2015' study were included. The demographics, classification according to the DECA criteria, etiology, and comorbidities were evaluated by age groups (less or equal than 14 and greater than 14 years). Results. A total of 2,914 patients (age range, 1-90 years) were included in the "Alergológica 2015" study. Of these, 965 patients (33.1%) were diagnosed with AC (77.5% > 14 years). AC was classified as severe, moderate, or mild in 1.8%, 46.4%, and 51.8%, respectively; and as intermittent or persistent in 51.6% and 48.4% of the patients. AC alone occurred in 4% of patients. AC was mainly associated with rhinitis (88.4%), asthma (38.2%), food allergy (8.3%) and atopic dermatitis (3.5%). In allergic respiratory disease rhinitis preceded AC and asthma developed later. The severity and duration of AC was significantly associated with severity and duration of rhinitis (p less than 0.001 for both age groups) and asthma (p less than 0.001 only in adults). Conclusions. The application of the new DECA classification for AC reveals a direct relationship between AC, rhinitis and asthma respect to severity and duration. These relationships suggest that AC should be considered an integral part of the "one airway, one disease" hypothesis
A benchmark for endoluminal scene segmentation of colonoscopy images
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third cause of cancer death worldwide. Currently, the standard approach to reduce CRC-related mortality is to perform regular screening in search for polyps and colonoscopy is the screening tool of choice. The main limitations of this screening procedure are polyp miss rate and the inability to perform visual assessment of polyp malignancy. These drawbacks can be reduced by designing decision support systems (DSS) aiming to help clinicians in the different stages of the procedure by providing endoluminal scene segmentation. Thus, in this paper, we introduce an extended benchmark of colonoscopy image segmentation, with the hope of establishing a new strong benchmark for colonoscopy image analysis research. The proposed dataset consists of 4 relevant classes to inspect the endoluminal scene, targeting different clinical needs. Together with the dataset and taking advantage of advances in semantic segmentation literature, we provide new baselines by training standard fully convolutional networks (FCNs). We perform a comparative study to show that FCNs significantly outperform, without any further postprocessing, prior results in endoluminal scene segmentation, especially with respect to polyp segmentation and localization

Effects of Watching Cartoons During an Echocardiography on Infants and Preschool Children. A Prospective Randomized Study
Echocardiography is currently the main diagnostic technique in pediatric cardiology, but sometimes it is difficult to use in very young children, as a complete and accurate study depends on the patient’s and family’s cooperation. Children’s behavior is one of the main problems for this procedure, and interventions like sedative medication have been used to facilitate its performance. The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of TV entertainment in infants and preschool children during echocardiography. We designed an experimental study in children with a heart murmur. An examination room was prepared with a TV on the ceiling, giving the children an unobstructed view during the echocardiography procedure. Fifty-eight patients were randomized into two groups: TV intervention vs. usual care (consisting of other distraction measures). The primary outcome was echocardiography time, but we also assessed blood pressure, quality of technique, child behavior, and parents’ stress level. The TV group showed a statistically significant reduction in duration of the echocardiography and systolic and diastolic blood pressure, as well as better quality of technique and child behavior. Consequently, we recommend the use of a TV as a simple and useful distraction method for improving echocardiography in young children
Influence of FFF Process Conditions on the Thermal, Mechanical, and Rheological Properties of Poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxy Hexanoate)
Polyhydroxyalkanoates are natural polyesters synthesized by microorganisms and bacteria. Due to their properties, they have been proposed as substitutes for petroleum derivatives. This work studies how the printing conditions employed in fuse filament fabrication (FFF) affect the properties of poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxy hexanoate) or PHBH. Firstly, rheological results predicted the printability of PHBH, which was successfully realized. Unlike what usually happens in FFF manufacturing or several semi-crystalline polymers, it was observed that the crystallization of PHBH occurs isothermally after deposition on the bed and not during the non-isothermal cooling stage, according to calorimetric measurements. A computational simulation of the temperature profile during the printing process was conducted to confirm this behavior, and the results support this hypothesis. Through the analysis of mechanical properties, it was shown that the nozzle and bed temperature increase improved the mechanical properties, reducing the void formation and improving interlayer adhesion, as shown by SEM. Intermediate printing velocities produced the best mechanical properties. This work has received funding from the Basque Government through grant IT1503-22, the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council (Red I+D+i 2022-CIEN-000022-01), and the project National Centre of Competence in Polymer Materials and Technologies for the 21st Century no. Europium and Terbium doped apatite obtained by hydrothermal transformation of biogenic calcium carbonate from oyster shells
Póster presentado en The International Conference on Crystal Growth and Epitaxy-ICCGE-20, Naples (Italy), 30-july 4 august 2023Seashell wastes from aquaculture and canning industries represent an important environmental issue nowadays [1]. Shells are made of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) with a low content of proteins and polysaccharides (1-5 wt.%). The valorization of this waste by using it as a raw material for the production of calcium phosphates may have a positive impact both environmental and economic, thus contributing to the sustainability of this important sector. In some biomedical industries, there is a growing demand for calcium phosphate (apatite) crystals including nanosized, micron-sized, and larger sizes. This work is devoted to producing functional apatite nanocrystals, eg. doped with luminescent lanthanide (Ln3+) ions [2,3], using
oyster shells (Mg-calcite, 5 wt.% Mg) from the species Crassostrea gigas as a Ca source. Experiments were performed by a one-pot hydrothermal method using KH2PO4 as a P reagent, a P/CaCO3 ratio of 0.6 (stoichiometric respect to hydroxyapatite), and either Eu3+ or Tb3+ (10and 20 mM). Characterization by XRD, FTIR, Raman, and ICP revealed the full transformation of biogenic CaCO3 particles into doped apatite. It was obtained at 160 ºC with (Ca+Ln)/P ratios
1.72 and 1.68 when adding Eu3+ and Tb3+ (10 mM) and 1.88 and 1.99 when the lanthanide concentration in the solution increased to 20 mM. In both cases, nanocrystals displayed needleor plate-like morphologies and polydisperse size distribution. Luminescence characterization of the nanoparticles showed different luminescence spectra depending on the doping ion. They displayed excitation and emission wavelengths of 395nm and 616 nm for the Eu3+-, and 372
and 543 nm for the Tb3+-doped samples. The relative luminescence intensities correlated well with their Ln3+ content while luminescence lifetimes (up to 1600 ¿s) were higher for Tb3+-doped apatites. Overall, the nanoparticles showed notable luminescent behavior and could find application as luminescent probes for bioimaging or nanophosphors for the electronic industry.

Consensus-based recommendations on physical activity and exercise in patients with diabetes at risk of foot ulcerations: a Delphi study
Background
Patients with diabetes mellitus are exposed to important complications. Currently little evidence exist on the guidelines that these patients, at some risk of foot ulceration, should follow for physical exercise.
Objectives
To reach a consensus among multidisciplinary and international experts on physical activity/exercise recommendations for patients with diabetes, according to foot ulcer risk.
Methods
Using a three-round Delphi method, a panel composed of 28 multidisciplinary experts in the management of diabetic foot assessed 109 recommendations on physical activity/exercise for patients with diabetes mellitus, according to their risk of foot ulcer. Consensus was assumed when 80% of responses matched the same category (agreement/disagreement).
Results
Twenty-nine experts participated in the first and second rounds of consultation, and twenty-eight did so in the third, reaching final agreement on 86 of the 109 recommendations considered (78.9%). The study, thus, generated a consensus set of recommendations concerning different aspects of diabetic footcare before, during, and after exercise (e.g. when to examine the foot, how to assess it, what type of sock and insole to use, what types of exercise to perform, and when it is advisable to return to activity after an ulceration).
Conclusion
This Delphi study generated recommendations based on the consensus of international experts on physical activity and exercise by patient with diabetes at risk of ulceration. Recommendations considered the state of the foot and the patient's history and status before physical activity and included information on intensity, duration, frequency, and progressions of physical activity/exercise, and the use of custom-made plantar orthoses, shoe prescription, and the convenience of returning to physical activity after an ulceration
