    Exploring wind direction and SO2 concentration by circular-linear density estimation

    The study of environmental problems usually requires the description of variables with different nature and the assessment of relations between them. In this work, an algorithm for flexible estimation of the joint density for a circular-linear variable is proposed. The method is applied for exploring the relation between wind direction and SO2 concentration in a monitoring station close to a power plant located in Galicia (NW-Spain), in order to compare the effectiveness of precautionary measures for pollutants reduction in two different years.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, 2 table

    Probing the ultimate limits of plasmonic enhancement.

    Metals support surface plasmons at optical wavelengths and have the ability to localize light to subwavelength regions. The field enhancements that occur in these regions set the ultimate limitations on a wide range of nonlinear and quantum optical phenomena. We found that the dominant limiting factor is not the resistive loss of the metal, but rather the intrinsic nonlocality of its dielectric response. A semiclassical model of the electronic response of a metal places strict bounds on the ultimate field enhancement. To demonstrate the accuracy of this model, we studied optical scattering from gold nanoparticles spaced a few angstroms from a gold film.     Global pseudodifferential operators of infinite order in classes of ultradifferentiable functions

    [EN] We develop a theory of pseudodifferential operators of infinite order for the global classes S. of ultradifferentiable functions in the sense of Bjorck, following the previous ideas given by Prangoski for ultradifferentiable classes in the sense of Komatsu.     Example-based generation of graphical modelling environments

    The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-42061-5_7Domain-Specific Languages (DSLs) present numerous benefits like powerful domain-specific primitives, an intuitive syntax for domain experts, and the possibility of advanced code generation for narrow domains. While a graphical syntax is sometimes desired for a DSL, constructing graphical modelling environments is a costly and highly technical task. This relegates domain experts to play a passive role in their development and hinders a wider adoption of graphical DSLs. Targeting a simpler DSL construction process, we propose an example based technique for the automatic generation of modelling environments for graphical DSLs. This way, starting from examples of the DSL likely provided by domain experts using drawing tools like yED, our system is able to synthesize a graphical modelling environment that mimics the syntax of the provided examples. This includes a meta-model for the abstract syntax of the DSL, and a graphical concrete syntax supporting spatial relationships like containment or attachment.     Efecto de la temperatura de termotratamiento en el comportamiento eléctrico de la madera de Pino radiata

    En el presente trabajo se analiza el efecto de la temperatura del termotratamiento sobre la conductividad eléctrica de la madera de pino radiata. Sobre probetas de madera de pino radiata de procedencia País Vasco (España), termotratada a 190ºC y 210ºC por el método Thermowood así como sobre piezas testigo de la misma especie, procedencia y dimensiones, acondicionadas todas ellas hasta masa constante a 20ºC/40%HR, 20ºC/65%HR y 20ºC/90%HR se evaluó la resistencia eléctrica (longitudinal y transversal) y, posteriormente, se ajustó el modelo Samuelsson para modelizar en cada tipo de material la relación humedad de la madera-resistencia eléctrica. Se concluye que la temperatura empleada en el tratamiento térmico de la madera afecta no sólo a la humedad de equilibrio sino, también, a su conductividad eléctrica, siendo máximo este efecto en el tratamiento efectuado a 210ºC. AbstractThis paper analyzes the effect of heat treatment temperature on the electrical conductivity of radiata pine wood. On specimens of radiata pine of the Basque Country provenance (Spain), heat treated at 190°C and 210°C by the method Thermowood as well as not treated matched samples, conditioned up to constant mass at the standard conditions of 20°C/40%; 20°C/65% and 20°C/90% RH the electrical resistance (longitudinal and transverse) was measured and a Samuelsson model fitted to describe the relationship between the electrical resistance and moisture content of each material. From the data is concluded that the temperature employed in the thermal treatment timber not only affects equilibrium moisture content of wood but also to its electrical conductivity, being this effect  maximum in the processing performed at 210°C

    EXPERIENCIA PILOTO CON LA HERRAMIENTA MOOSHAK EN UN GRUPO DE ALUMNOS DE ENFERMERÍA: CUESTIONARIO DE SATISFACCIÓN

    This paper aims at evaluating new educational resources which help instructors and students to achieve the goals of the Higher Education European Space. This study presents the results of a feedback survey based on a pilot experience which proposes a web environment to assist in the learning process of Medical Surgical Nursing in an undergraduate degree program. A web-based automatic assessment tool named Mooshak was used by 54 students who voluntarily participated in the study. Five of these students solved all the problems proposed. A total of 16 (28.57%) students answered an on-line survey, 15 of them agreed that the experience with Mooshak had been satisfactory or highly satisfactory. The on-line activity was rated with a mean score of 7.96 out of 10. We can conclude that there is evidence to suggest that the use of Mooshak has had a positive impact on Medical Surgical Nursing students' learning.El objetivo de este trabajo es evaluar nuevos recursos educativos que ayuden a los docentes y a los alumnos a conseguir los objetivos que se plantean en el nuevo Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior (EEES). Este estudio presenta los resultados de un cuestionario de retroalimentación sobre una experiencia piloto que propone un entorno web en el proceso de aprendizaje de la materia Enfermería Médico-Quirúrgica (EMQ) de una titulación universitaria de enfermería. Una herramienta web de evaluación automática llamada Mooshak fue utilizada por los 54 alumnos que participaron en la experiencia de forma voluntaria, logrando 5 de ellos resolver la totalidad de los problemas propuestos. Un total de 16 (28.57%) alumnos respondieron a una encuesta (on-line), 15 de los cuales indicaron que la experiencia había sido satisfactoria o muy satisfactoria, obteniendo la actividad on-line una calificación media de 7.96 sobre 10. En base a esta experiencia, podemos afirmar que hay evidencias de que el uso del recurso on-line Mooshak ha tenido una incidencia positiva en la formación de los alumnos de EM

    Biochemical Characterization of a Trypanosomatid Isolated from the Plant Amaranthus retroflexus

    A protozoan flagelate has recently been isolated from Amaranthus retroflexus. This plant grows near economically important crops in southeastern Spain, which are known to be parasitized by Phytomonas spp. The present study focuses on the characterization of the energy metabolism of this new isolate. These flagellates utilize glucose efficiently as their primary energy source, although they are unable to completely degrade it. They excrete ethanol, acetate, glycine, and succinate in lower amount, as well as ammonium. The presence of glycosomes was indicated by the early enzymes of the glycolytic pathway, one enzyme of the glycerol pathway (glycerol kinase), and malate dehydrogenase. No evidence of a fully functional citric-acid cycle was found. In the absence of catalase activity, these flagellates showed significant superoxide dismutase activity located in the glycosomal and cytosolic fractions. These trypanosomes, despite being morphologically and metabolically similar to other Phytomonas isolated from the same area, showed significant differences, suggesting that they are phylogenetically different species

    The Structural Architecture of an Infectious Mammalian Prion Using Electron Cryomicroscopy

    The structure of the infectious prion protein (PrPSc), which is responsible for Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans and bovine spongiform encephalopathy, has escaped all attempts at elucidation due to its insolubility and propensity to aggregate. PrPSc replicates by converting the non-infectious, cellular prion protein (PrPC) into the misfolded, infectious conformer through an unknown mechanism. PrPSc and its N-terminally truncated variant, PrP 27-30, aggregate into amorphous aggregates, 2D crystals, and amyloid fibrils. The structure of these infectious conformers is essential to understanding prion replication and the development of structure-based therapeutic interventions. Here we used the repetitive organization inherent to GPI-anchorless PrP 27-30 amyloid fibrils to analyze their structure via electron cryomicroscopy. Fourier-transform analyses of averaged fibril segments indicate a repeating unit of 19.1 Å. 3D reconstructions of these fibrils revealed two distinct protofilaments, and, together with a molecular volume of 18,990 Å3, predicted the height of each PrP 27-30 molecule as ~17.7 Å. Together, the data indicate a four-rung β-solenoid structure as a key feature for the architecture of infectious mammalian prions. Furthermore, they allow to formulate a molecular mechanism for the replication of prions. Knowledge of the prion structure will provide important insights into the self-propagation mechanisms of protein misfolding

    Identification of quantitative trait loci and candidate genes for primary metabolite content in strawberry fruit

    Improvement of nutritional and organoleptic quality of fruits is a key goal in current strawberry breeding programs. The ratio of sugars to acids is a determinant factor contributing to fruit liking, although different sugars and acids contribute in varying degrees to this complex trait. A segregating F1 population of 95 individuals, previously characterized for several fruit quality characters, was used to map during 2 years quantitative trait loci (QTL) for 50 primary metabolites, L -ascorbic acid (L-AA) and other related traits such as soluble solid content (SSC), titratable acidity (TA), and pH. A total of 133 mQTL were detected above the established thresholds for 44 traits. Only 12.9% of QTL were detected in the 2 years, suggesting a large environmental influence on primary metabolite content. An objective of this study was the identification of key metabolites that were associated to the overall variation in SSC and acidity. As it was observed in previous studies, a number of QTL controlling several metabolites and traits were co-located in homoeology group V (HG V). mQTL controlling a large variance in raffinose, sucrose, succinic acid, and L-AA were detected in approximate the same chromosomal regions of different homoeologous linkage groups belonging to HG V. Candidate genes for selected mQTL are proposed based on their co-localization, on the predicted function, and their differential gene expression among contrasting F1 progeny lines. RNA-seq analysis from progeny lines contrasting in L-AA content detected 826 differentially expressed genes and identified Mannose-6-phosphate isomerase, FaM6PI1, as a candidate gene contributing to natural variation in ascorbic acid in strawberry frui
