Faulkner’s Gothic Complex in A Rose for Emily
A rose for Emily is regarded as a typical gothic novel by Faulkner, due to its odd plot and ghastly setting. This paper discusses the relationship between this novel and the typical gothic novel from the perspectives of the theme, depiction of characters, setting and construction of the plot, so as to search for Faulkner’s gothic complex. Finally the conclusion is drawn that the application of gothic style into this novel helps to highlight its theme and setting. Key words: Goth, theme, depiction of characters, setting, construction of plot Résumé Une Rose pour Emily est considéré comme un roman typiquement gothique par Faulkner, grace à son intrique extraordinaire et le fond horrible. Cet article traite les rapports entre ce roman et le roman typiquement gothique dans les perspectives du thème, de la description des personnages, du fond et de la construction de l’intrigue, de sorte à trouver le complexe gothique de Faulkner. Finalement, on peut en conclure que l’application du style gothique dans ce roman contribue à approfonfir son thème et accentuer son fond. Heathcliff’s Demonization: A Reading of Wuthering Heights
Emily Brontë, the nineteenth-century English woman writer, together with her first and only published novel, Wuthering Heights, has always been a riddle in the history of British literature. Critics and readers are all curious about why a female writer should create such a merciless and malicious demon as Heathcliff in her novel. This paper explores Heathcliff’s demonization from three aspects: the root and inspiration of demonization as well as Heathcliff’s aspiration after a life of eternal bliss. On one hand, the repressions Heathcliff suffers from the society, culture, family and even himself are the roots of his demonization, while on the other, his rebellious spirit inspires his demonization. Unfortunately, no matter how thoroughly he rebels, he still can’t get satisfied or feel happy until starving himself to death, the only way for him to achieve a life of eternal bliss
Cavity QED treatment of scattering-induced efficient free-space excitation and collection in high-Q whispering-gallery microcavities
Whispering-gallery microcavity laser possesses ultralow threshold, whereas
convenient free-space optical excitation and collection suffer from low
efficiencies due to its rotational symmetry. Here we analytically study a
three-dimensional microsphere coupled to a nano-sized scatterer in the
framework of quantum optics. It is found that the scatterer is capable of
coupling light in and out of the whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) without
seriously degrading their high-Q properties, while the microsphere itself plays
the role of a lens to focus the input beam on the scatterer and vice versa. Our
analytical results show that (1) the high-Q WGMs can be excited in free space,
and (2) over 50% of the microcavity laser emission can be collected within less
than . This coupling system holds great potential for low
threshold microlasers free of external couplers.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure
VIX AND VIX FUTURES: A TOOL OF RISK REDUCTION AND DOWNSIDE PROTECTION FOR HEDGE FUNDS
We analyze VIX, VIX futures and hedge funds. VIX is a measure of the implied volatility of S&P 500 index options. VIX futures performance is measured by the S&P 500 VIX Mid-Term Futures Index and the CBOE VIX Premium Strategy Index. Credit Suisse Hedge Fund Index and Hedge Fund Research Indices represent hedge funds performance.
In our project, we expand Dash and Moran (2005) by expanding the end period of survey from December 2004 to May 2014 and including two hedge fund databases, Credit Suisse and Hedge Fund Research. In addition, we conduct analyses on both VIX index and VIX futures indices, which are not included in the Dash and Moran (2005). Not only we check the addition of VIX index or VIX futures indices to hedge fund portfolios for risk reduction or downside protection, but also our analysis pays more attention to the period of 2008 financial crisis.
We find that broad-based hedge fund indices and most narrow hedge fund indices are negatively and asymmetrically correlated with VIX. Addition of VIX index as well as VIX futures indices protects hedge fund portfolios from major drawdowns and helps reduce risk
Can scalable design of wings for flapping wing micro air vehicle be inspired by natural flyers?
Lift production is constantly a great challenge for flapping wing micro air vehicles (MAVs). Designing a workable wing, therefore, plays an essential role. Dimensional analysis is an effective and valuable tool in studying the biomechanics of flyers. In this paper, geometric similarity study is firstly presented. Then, the pw−AR ratio is defined and employed in wing performance estimation before the lumped parameter is induced and utilized in wing design. Comprehensive scaling laws on relation of wing performances for natural flyers are next investigated and developed via statistical analysis before being utilized to examine the wing design. Through geometric similarity study and statistical analysis, the results show that the aspect ratio and lumped parameter are independent on mass, and the lumped parameter is inversely proportional to the aspect ratio. The lumped parameters and aspect ratio of flapping wing MAVs correspond to the range of wing performances of natural flyers. Also, the wing performances of existing flapping wing MAVs are examined and follow the scaling laws. Last, the manufactured wings of the flapping wing MAVs are summarized. Our results will, therefore, provide a simple but powerful guideline for biologists and engineers who study the morphology of natural flyers and design flapping wing MAVs
High-Q exterior whispering gallery modes in a metal-coated microresonator
We propose a kind of plasmonic whispering gallery modes highly localized on
the exterior surface of a metal-coated microresonator. This exterior (EX)
surface mode possesses high quality factors at room temperature, and can be
efficiently excited by a tapered fiber. The EX mode can couple to an interior
(IN) mode and this coupling produces a strong anti-crossing behavior, which not
only allows conversion of IN to EX modes, but also forms a long-lived
anti-symmetric mode. As a potential application, the EX mode could be used for
a biosensor with a sensitivity high up to 500 nm per refraction index unit, a
large figure of merit, and a wide detection range
