Search for double beta decay of Zinc and Tungsten with the help of low-background ZnWO4 crystal scintillators
Double beta processes in 64-Zn, 70-Zn, 180-W, and 186-W have been searched
for with the help of large volume (0.1-0.7 kg) low background ZnWO4 crystal
scintillators at the Gran Sasso National Laboratories of the INFN. Total time
of measurements exceeds 10 thousands hours. New improved half-life limits on
double electron capture and electron capture with positron emission in 64-Zn
have been set, in particular (all the limits are at 90% C.L.): T1/2(0nu2EC)>
1.1e20 yr, T1/2(2nuECbeta+)>7.0e20 yr, and T1/2(0nuECbeta+)>4.3e20 yr. The
different modes of double beta processes in 70-Zn, 180-W, and 186-W have been
restricted at the level of 1e17-1e20 yr.Comment: 20 p., submitted to Phys. Rev.
Effective field theory analysis of the self-interacting chameleon
We analyse the phenomenology of a self-interacting scalar field in the
context of the chameleon scenario originally proposed by Khoury and Weltman. In
the absence of self-interactions, this type of scalar field can mediate long
range interactions and simultaneously evade constraints from violation of the
weak equivalence principle. By applying to such a scalar field the effective
field theory method proposed for Einstein gravity by Goldberger and Rothstein,
we give a thorough perturbative evaluation of the importance of non-derivative
self-interactions in determining the strength of the chameleon mediated force
in the case of orbital motion. The self-interactions are potentially dangerous
as they can change the long range behaviour of the field. Nevertheless, we show
that they do not lead to any dramatic phenomenological consequence with respect
to the linear case and solar system constraints are fulfilled.Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures. Final version accepted for publication on

Cold Dark Matter Hypotheses in the MSSM
We perform a Bayesian model selection analysis in the the R-parity conserving
MSSM to compare two different assumptions: whether the lightest neutralinos
make all or only part of the cold dark matter. This corresponds to either
imposing full WMAP relic density limits or just its upper bound for
constraining the MSSM parameters. We consider several realisations of the MSSM,
namely, three GUT-scale SUSY breaking scenarios with a handful of parameters
corresponding to the CMSSM, anomaly mediation and the large volume string
scenarios as well as the weak-scale 25-parameter phenomenological MSSM (pMSSM).
The results give a data-based quantitative evidence for a multicomponent cold
dark matter. The pMSSM posterior samples indicate that the choice of imposing
full WMAP limits or just its upper bound affects mostly the gaugino-higgsino
content of the neutralino and, against naive expectations, essentially not any

Achievement and Aspiration
In contrast to previous work, our study considers both meaning and mediation factors in the achievement-aspiration relationship. In a sample of graduate students ("academic-career aspirants"), we examine sex differences in the achievement- aspiration relationship as they vary with type of academic achievement and professional aspirations, and as it is mediated by individuals' perceptions of their professional roles and their faculty's support. We find: (1) Women's achievement-aspiration conversion is different from, but not necessarily lower than, men's. Rather, the strength and direction of the relationship vary with aspiration type (traditional versus alternative) and, to some extent, with specific types of academic achievement (e.g., paper publication and GPA). (2) The mediators of the achievement-aspiration relationship also vary by sex and aspiration type. Supersymmetry Without Prejudice
We begin an exploration of the physics associated with the general
CP-conserving MSSM with Minimal Flavor Violation, the pMSSM. The 19 soft SUSY
breaking parameters in this scenario are chosen so as to satisfy all existing
experimental and theoretical constraints assuming that the WIMP is a
conventional thermal relic, ie, the lightest neutralino. We scan this parameter
space twice using both flat and log priors for the soft SUSY breaking mass
parameters and compare the results which yield similar conclusions. Detailed
constraints from both LEP and the Tevatron searches play a particularly
important role in obtaining our final model samples. We find that the pMSSM
leads to a much broader set of predictions for the properties of the SUSY
partners as well as for a number of experimental observables than those found
in any of the conventional SUSY breaking scenarios such as mSUGRA. This set of
models can easily lead to atypical expectations for SUSY signals at the LHC.Comment: 61 pages, 24 figs. Refs., figs, and text added, typos fixed; This

Measurements of the observed cross sections for exclusive light hadron production in e^+e^- annihilation at \sqrt{s}= 3.773 and 3.650 GeV
By analyzing the data sets of 17.3 pb taken at GeV
and 6.5 pb taken at GeV with the BESII detector at the
BEPC collider, we have measured the observed cross sections for 12 exclusive
light hadron final states produced in annihilation at the two energy
points. We have also set the upper limits on the observed cross sections and
the branching fractions for decay to these final states at 90%

Particle density fluctuations
Event-by-event fluctuations in the multiplicities of charged particles and
photons at SPS energies are discussed. Fluctuations are studied by controlling
the centrality of the reaction and rapidity acceptance of the detectors.
Results are also presented on the event-by-event study of correlations between
the multiplicity of charged particles and photons to search for DCC-like

Measurements of the observed cross sections for exclusive light hadrons containing at , 3.650 and 3.6648 GeV
By analyzing the data sets of 17.3, 6.5 and 1.0 pb taken,
respectively, at , 3.650 and 3.6648 GeV with the BES-II
detector at the BEPC collider, we measure the observed cross sections for
, , ,
and at the three energy
points. Based on these cross sections we set the upper limits on the observed
cross sections and the branching fractions for decay into these

A Bayesian analysis of pentaquark signals from CLAS data
We examine the results of two measurements by the CLAS collaboration, one of
which claimed evidence for a pentaquark, whilst the other found no
such evidence. The unique feature of these two experiments was that they were
performed with the same experimental setup. Using a Bayesian analysis we find
that the results of the two experiments are in fact compatible with each other,
but that the first measurement did not contain sufficient information to
determine unambiguously the existence of a . Further, we suggest a
means by which the existence of a new candidate particle can be tested in a
